Why should we fear the swelling flood,

Or dread our dying day?

Our blessed Savior by His blood

Has borne the curse away.

Why do we mourn departed friends,

As if they suffered harm?

Death is the messenger Christ sends

To fetch them to His arms.

The grave of every saint is blest;

Yes, blessed are the dead

Who, dying in Christ Jesus, rest

Forever with their Head!

When Jesus comes, with trumpet sound,

The dead in Christ shall rise;

His saints shall come forth from the ground

Forever glorified!

Savior, Your rich consolations

Of grace and hope now send,

That we may with faith and patience

Await our coming end.
