The Law And The Gospel

Don Fortner

(Tune: The Doxology   LM)

The law demanding all my debt,

    Will not forgive, will not forget!

    But the gospel points to Christ’s blood,

    And says He paid my debt to God!

Here, Lord, I bow with guilty hands.

    I’ve broken all of Your commands;

    But the gospel tells me Your Son

    More than made up for all I’ve done.

“Run, work, and do,” the law demands,

    Yet gives me neither feet nor hands;

    But sweet, good news the gospel brings.

    It bids me fly, and gives me wings!

With these my weighty soul may fly

    Away to Christ, my Priest on high,

    Nor faint, nor falter in this race,

                       But work with cheer and sing of grace!
