Forbid it, Lord that I should boast,

Save in the cross of Christ;

Through Jesus' death upon the cross

I'm saved and fully blessed.

The triune God is here revealed

Both merciful and true;

Christ's blood has satisfied the law

And seals my pardon too!

Looking to Christ upon the cross,

I call the Lord my own

And God, my Father, smiles on me

From His pure, holy throne!

When satan turns my eyes away

From Christ upon His cross,

How quickly then I fall a prey

To foolish pride and lusts.

Pride turns and looks within to see

How much I have progressed;

My flesh would run to Sinai and

Swell with self-righteousness!

But when by faith the cross I see

And Christ's great love for me,

I'm kept in peace and strive to please

Him who by blood bought me!
