Title:       CHRIST – THE WORD OF GOD

Text:       Revelation 19:13 “His name is called The Word of God.”

          Scripture Reading:

Subject:  Christ The Word of God

          Date:       Tuesday Evening – October 6, 1992

Introduction:

The doctrine declared by this name is of immense importance. All our knowledge of God, all our hopes of grace and life, all our salvation depends upon it. If Christ is not the very Word of God, then we have no Savior, and we have no hope. “His name is called The Word of God!” Realizing the immense importance of this subject, I ask for your careful attention. My message will not be lengthy, but it is very, very important. So give me your attention.

In the New Testament, our Lord Jesus Christ is frequently referred to as the Word of God.

·       John 1:1-3

·       Hebrews 4:12-13

·       II Peter 3:5

·       I John 1:1-3; 5:7

Proposition:

Jesus Christ our Lord is the Word of God.

Some, seeking to undermine the Scriptures, have suggested that the Apostles got their idea of the eternal Logos, the eternal Word, from the writings of Plato. But that is not accurate. Plato got his idea of the eternal Word from the Old Testament Scriptures and from the writings of the ancient Jewish theologians (Ps. 138:2).

One reason for using this name for Christ is the fact that the ancient Jewish writers frequently referred to Messiah as the Word of God. So the Apostles, especially when writing to Jewish believers, used this name to refer to Christ. But what is the significance of this name? Why is the Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior called “The Word of God”? That is the question I want to answer tonight from the Scriptures.

I.  First, let’s look at John 1:1. Christ is called the Word of God Because He Is The Son of God.

As the Word, whether silent or expressed, is the birth of the mind, the image of it, and equal to it, so Christ is the only begotten of the Father. He is the express image of the invisible God. Indeed, he is God, in all things equal with the Father. This is John’s doctrine in John 1:1-2.

·       The Word was God!”

·       The same was in the beginning with God!” Face to face with, equal to God.

Yet, as the Word and the mind are distinct from one another so the Father and the Son are distinct Persons within the triune Godhead. This is John’s doctrine in I John 5:7.

So when the Scriptures declare that Christ is the Word of God they are telling us that…

·       He is God.

·       He is the Only Begotten of the Father.

·       He is a Distinct Person from the Father.

·       He is One with the Father.

Jesus Christ is God revealed, so much so that he says, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:4-11).

II.  Christ is called the Word of God Because He Is The Living Word of Whom The Written Word Speaks – (Luke 24:27, 44, 45).

Everything recorded in Holy Scripture speaks of Christ Jesus. Christ is “all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27; I Cor. 2:2). We preach “all the counsel of God” when we proclaim to men the Person and Work of Christ.

·       All the Old Testament Scriptures Promise Him.

·       The Four Gospels Present Him.

·       Acts, the Epistles of the New Testament, and Revelation Proclaim Him.

The written word is like a gold chest. Christ is the Jewel it contains. The Bible is not a book of morality, a book of politics, a book of science, or even a book of religious dogma. It is a Book about Christ! Cherish the Bible. It is the inspired Word of God, infallible and without error. But it is to be cherished because of the Person revealed in it. Take Christ out of the Book and you have nothing left but processed wood with leather bindings and gold edges.

III.  Christ Is Called the Word of God Because of The Works Ascribed To Him.

A.  He is the Word of God who spoke for God’s elect in the council of peace and covenant of grace before the world began (Ps. 40:6-8; Heb. 10:5-10).

In the council chambers of the Triune God Christ spoke for us, as our Surety, agreeing to do his Father’s will for the accomplishment of our salvation.

1.     His blood is the blood of the everlasting covenant (Heb. 12:20).

2.     His blessings are covenant blessings (Eph. 1:3; II Tim. 1:9).

B.  Christ is The Word of God by whom all things were created (John 1:3; II Pet. 3:5).

1.     He spoke all things into being out of nothing.

2.     He upholds all things by the Word of his power – (Heb. 1:3).

C.  As the Word of God, Christ is the Revelation of God’s Being and the Interpreter of His Will (John 1:18).

It is not possible for man to know God except in and through the Lord Jesus Christ!

D.  Moreover, as the Word of God, Christ is our Advocate with the Father (I John 2:1-2).

He speaks to God on our behalf. He makes intercession for us in the presence of God.

1.     Who is our Advocate? – “Jesus Christ the Righteous!”

2.     What does he ask for? – The non-imputation of sin!

3.     What is the basis of his intercession? – “He is the propitiation for our sin!”

4.     For whom does he make intercession? His people (John 17:9, 20).

·       His Chosen, Redeemed People.

·       His Called, Believing People.

·       His Tempted, Tried People.

E.  It is Christ, the Word of God, by whom we are granted and preserved in Eternal Life (Heb. 4:12-13).

As in the old creation, so in the new creation of grace, all things have their being by Christ, the Word of God. Notice what Paul tells us in this passage. Christ, The Word of God, is

·       Living!

·       Powerful!

·       Dividing!

·       Discerning! (vv. 12-13).

·       Encouraging! (v. 14).

·       Sympathizing! (v. 15).

·       Helping (v. 16).

Application:

Christ is The Word of God because…

·       He is the Son of God.

·       He is the One of Whom the Scriptures speak.

·       He is the One by whom God is known to us and in whom we are known of God.

·       Christ is God’s Exalted Word. (Ps. 38:2)

·       Christ is the One Exalted in The Word.

·       Let us ever Exalt Him as The Word.
