Introduction:
I
want to pick up tonight right where I left off Sunday morning, and talk to you
about the great, everlasting, immutable, electing, redeeming, saving love of
the Lord Jesus Christ for his people.
The title of my message
tonight is “I Have Loved Thee”. My text is Revelation 3:9-12.
Here the Lord Jesus Christ tells us that, when he has finished all that he
purposed from eternity to do, he will cause all the world to know that he has
loved us. What a statement! Read the text with me. Here our blessed Savior
tells us what he will do for those who are the objects of his love.
Revelation
3:9-12 "Behold, I will make them of the
synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I
will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have
loved thee. (10) Because thou hast
kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of
temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon
the earth. (11) Behold, I come
quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. (12) Him that overcometh will I make a
pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write
upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh
down out of heaven from my God: and I
will write upon him my new name."
Proposition:
There is a great multitude of sinners in this world who are the distinct
objects of Christ’s love, for whom he does all things.
I want us to look at these three verses line by line, word by word,
seeking the grace of God the Holy Spirit to teach us this night wonderful
things out of his Word about the love of God for his people.
I.
A
Great Separation (v. 9)
Our Lord will always separate the wheat from the chaff and the precious
from the vile, and the sheep from the goats.
Revelation
3:9 "Behold, I will make them of the
synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I
will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have
loved thee."
The
Jews, who are Abraham’s physical seed, claimed to be God’s people exclusively;
and many to this day regard them as the people of God’s choice. But in this
ninth verse our Lord calls those who yet worship according to the customs of
Judaism and the law of Moses, “the
synagogue of Satan.”
A. It is not Abraham’s physical seed, but his spiritual seed who
are the people of God, the Israel of God, for whom the promises and the
covenant were made. The Church of God is the Israel of God.
Romans
2:28-29 "For he is not a Jew, which is one
outwardly; neither is that circumcision,
which is outward in the flesh: (29) But
he is a Jew, which is one inwardly;
and circumcision is that of the
heart, in the spirit, and not in the
letter; whose praise is not of men,
but of God."
Romans
11:25-26 "For I would not, brethren, that ye
should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own
conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of
the Gentiles be come in. (26) And so
all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the
Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:"
Philippians
3:3 "For we are the circumcision, which
worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence
in the flesh."
·
Abraham is the father of all
who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom. 4:1, 16, 22-25; Gal. 3:6-7).
Romans 4:1
"What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to
the flesh, hath found?"
Romans 4:16
"Therefore it is of
faith, that it might be by grace; to
the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of
the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father
of us all,"
Romans 4:22-25
"And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. (23) Now it was not written for his
sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
(24) But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him
that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
(25) Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our
justification."
Galatians 3:6-7 "Even as Abraham believed God, and it
was accounted to him for righteousness.
(7) Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the
children of Abraham."
·
Judaism is an apostate
religion.
2. There are many who, like the Jews, claim to be God’s people
who are not. They say they are Jews (Christians, Children of God), but they
lie.
Listen to this preacher. I am
telling you the truth. All who hope for acceptance with God because of a decision they made for Jesus,
because of their baptism,
their church membership,
their good works, their
taking the sacraments, their experiences, or their personal holiness are
hypocrites. They may be called a church. They may think they are the house of
God. But our Lord here identifies all such as “the synagogue of Satan.”
Note:
God’s elect, the true people of God are circumcised in their hearts by the
Spirit of God, not in their flesh (Col. 2:10-14). We worship God in the Spirit,
rejoice in Christ alone, and have no confidence in the flesh (Phil. 3:3).
Colossians
2:10-14 "And ye are complete in him, which is
the head of all principality and power:
(11) In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without
hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of
Christ: (12) Buried with him in
baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him
through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the
dead. (13) And you, being dead in
your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with
him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
(14) Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which
was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;"
Philippians
3:3 "For we are the circumcision, which
worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence
in the flesh."
II. A GREAT HONOR (v. 9)
Revelation
3:9 "Behold, I will make them of the
synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and
worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee."
In the end the despised people of God shall be
exalted over their enemies. Our Lord will make our enemies to bow before our
feet and know that he loved us, chose us, redeemed us, called us, and saved us
by his grace.
Matthew
25:31-34 "When the Son of man shall come in his
glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of
his glory: 32 And before him shall be
gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a
shepherd divideth his sheep from the
goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep
on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world:"
Matthew
25:41 "Then shall he say also unto them on the
left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the
devil and his angels:"
Ephesians
2:7 "That in the ages to come he might show
the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness
toward us through Christ Jesus."
Revelation
19:1-9 "And after these things I heard a great
voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and
honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:
(2) For true and righteous are his
judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with
her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand. (3) And again they said, Alleluia. And
her smoke rose up for ever and ever. (4) And
the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God
that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. (5) And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God,
all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. (6) And I heard as it were the voice of
a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty
thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. (7) Let us be glad and rejoice, and
give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath
made herself ready. (8) And to her
was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the
fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
(9) And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And
he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God."
III. A Great Love (v. 9)
Revelation
3:9 "Behold, I will make them of the
synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I
will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that
I have loved thee."
Let
every believing sinner here, receive, believe, and rejoice in this word from
God our Savior. The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Lord of glory says
to you, my brother, my sister, and to me – “I Have Loved Thee!” Everything
God has done, is doing, or shall hereafter do, he does because of his sovereign,
saving love for his elect. Those who foolishly talk about the universal love of
God talk ignorance.
·
The love of God is not mutable. It is immutable!
·
The love of God is not temporary. It is eternal!
·
The love of God is not common. It is special! -- Ask Noah and his
generation! -- Ask Pharaoh and Egypt! -- Ask Moses and the sons of Korah!
Isaiah
43:1-5 "But now thus saith the LORD that
created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have
redeemed thee, I have called thee by
thy name; thou art mine. (2) When thou passest through the
waters, I will be with thee; and
through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the
fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. (3) For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave
Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and
Seba for thee. (4) Since thou wast
precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee:
therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. (5) Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from
the east, and gather thee from the west;"
Jeremiah
31:3 "The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore
with lovingkindness have I drawn thee."
A. Everything God does, he does for you who are the
objects of his love.
1. He chose you, because he
loved you!
2. Christ redeemed you because
he loved you!
3. The Holy Spirit called you
because he loved you!
4. Providence, all of
providence, is directed by the love of God for you!
5. The long-suffering of our
God is not an evidence of God’s love for the wicked, but of his love for his
people (2 Pet. 3:9, 17).

B. Take away God’s special, distinguishing love for his
elect, and you take away every gracious motive for faith, faithfulness,
devotion, and godliness, and make all religious service a legal, mercenary
activity.
IV. A GREAT
PROMISE (v.
10)
Revelation
3:10 "Because thou hast kept the word of my
patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come
upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth."
As long as we live in this world, Christ will keep
his own in the hour of temptation. Those who keep God’s Word shall be kept by God.
Those who hold fast the truth of God shall be held in truth by the grace of
God. Those who persevere in faith shall be preserved by grace.
John
10:27-30 "My sheep hear my voice, and I know
them, and they follow me: (28) And I
give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. (29) My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. (30) I and my Father are one."
John
17:11-15 "And now I am no more in the world, but
these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own
name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. (12) While I was with them in the
world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none
of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be
fulfilled. (13) And now come I to
thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy
fulfilled in themselves. (14) I have
given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the
world, even as I am not of the world.
(15) I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that
thou shouldest keep them from the evil."
1
Corinthians 10:13 "There hath no temptation
taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye
are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may
be able to bear it."
A.
Christ will preserve all his
own from apostasy.
Though
heresies come and abound, God’s elect shall not be deceived. The
ever-increasing acceptance of freewillism, legalism, works religion, and sheer
ritualism will not affect the saints of God.
1
Corinthians 11:19 "For there must be also
heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among
you."
2
Thessalonians 2:7-13 "For the mystery of
iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. (8) And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall
consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of
his coming: (9) Even him, whose
coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying
wonders, (10) And with all
deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received
not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that
they should believe a lie: (12) That
they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in
unrighteousness. (13) But we are
bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord,
because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through
sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:"
1 John
2:19-20 "They went out from us, but they were
not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not
all of us. (20) But ye have an
unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things."
B. The Lord Jesus Christ will graciously preserve his
elect in the midst of their trials.
Isaiah
41:10 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea,
I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my
righteousness."
Isaiah
43:1-5 "But now thus saith the LORD that
created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have
redeemed thee, I have called thee by
thy name; thou art mine. 2 When thou passest through the waters,
I will be with thee; and through the
rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou
shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3 For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave
Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and
Seba for thee. 4 Since thou wast
precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee:
therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. 5 Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee
from the west;"
C. The Son of God will preserve all his elect in the
way of faith, grace, and obedience unto life everlasting.
Psalms
37:23-24 "The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be
utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him
with his hand."
Jeremiah
32:38-40 "And they shall be my people, and I will
be their God: 39 And I will give them
one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them,
and of their children after them: 40 And
I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from
them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall
not depart from me."
God’s elect cannot and shall
not perish. Not even one! We are kept by the power of his grace in the hands of
an omnipotent Savior.
“He will keep me ‘til the
river
Rolls its waters at my feet.
Then He’ll bear me safely
over,
Where my Savior I shall
meet!”
V.
A GREAT RESPONSIBILITY (v.
11)
It is our Lord’s promise of
preservation that inspires us to perseverance (v. 11).
Revelation
3:11 "Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast
which thou hast, that no man take thy crown."
Notice
that it is upon the basis of his promise to preserve us from temptation that
our Redeemer admonishes us to persevere. Contrary to popular religious opinion,
the promise of absolute, unconditional grace does not promote licentiousness,
but devotion and godliness. In fact, that is the very basis of godliness and
the motive for it.
Titus 3:4-8 "But after that the kindness and love of
God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not
by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he
saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That
being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of
eternal life. 8 This is a faithful
saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which
have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are
good and profitable unto men."
These two things are facts
so plainly revealed in Holy Scripture that they simply cannot be denied:
A. All God’s elect shall be
preserved unto eternal glory.
B. But only those who persevere
in faith, who go on in the way of grace and righteousness, and who hold fast
the gospel unto the end shall be saved (Matt. 10:22; Col. 1:22-23; Heb. 3:6,
14; 10:26, 38, 39).
Those
who do not persevere in the faith never had faith. Those who do not continue in
the grace of God never knew the grace of God. Those who are not found walking
with Christ when they leave this world never walked with Christ in this world.
Matthew
10:22 "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that
endureth to the end shall be saved."
Colossians
1:22-23 "In the body of his flesh through death,
to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: (23) If ye continue in the faith
grounded and settled, and be not
moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature
which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;"
Hebrews 3:6 "But Christ as a son over his own house;
whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the
hope firm unto the end."
Hebrews
3:14 "For we are made partakers of Christ, if
we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;"
Hebrews
10:26 "For if we sin wilfully after that we
have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for
sins,"
Hebrews
10:38-39 "Now the just shall live by faith: but
if any man draw back, my soul shall
have no pleasure in him. (39) But we
are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the
saving of the soul."
VI. A GREAT
PRIVILEGE (v.
12)
In this 12th
verse, our Lord Jesus Christ promises a great, everlasting privilege to all who
hold fast and persevere in the faith of the gospel. Look at it.
Revelation
3:12 "Him that overcometh will I make a
pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write
upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh
down out of heaven from my God: and I
will write upon him my new name."
Those
who persevere in the faith shall conquer all their enemies in the end and be
gloriously triumphant in Christ (Rom. 8:35-39).
Romans
8:35-39 "Who shall separate us from the love of
Christ? shall tribulation, or
distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we
are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more
than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other
creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ
Jesus our Lord."
The Son of God says, “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in
the temple of my God.”
·
A pillar is a permanent structure in
a permanent place. So Christ is here promising us a place of permanent, eternal
residence in heaven itself!
·
And while we live here below, while we go on persevering
in the faith, holding fast the gospel, clinging to him as our only hope and our
only Savior, he gives us assurance of our interest in him. This is what he
says, “I will write upon him the name of
my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is the new Jerusalem, which
cometh down out of heaven from my God, and I will write upon him my new name.”
·
In a word, our Savior is
saying,
I will make you to know that you belong
to me. I will make it evident that you belong to God, to the New Jerusalem, and
to me, and that all the blessings and privileges of the sons of God are yours
forever!
That
brings me to the last line of verse 12. Here our Lord promises to give every
one of his people…
VII. A GREAT
NAME!
Revelation
3:12 "Him that overcometh will I make a
pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write
upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh
down out of heaven from my God: and I
will write upon him my new name."
Let
me show you what his new name is, his acquired name, which he promises to write
upon his people. This is the name that he gives us: Jehovah-tsidkenu, “THE LORD
OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS” (Cf Jer. 23:6 & 33:16).
Jeremiah
23:6 "In his days Judah shall be saved, and
Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his
name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."
Jeremiah
33:16 "In those days shall Judah be saved, and
Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is
the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness."
Need
I say more? Here is our motive for life, for godliness, for devotion, for all
things – The Son of God declares “I HAVE LOVED THEE!”
AMEN.
