Sermon #2322[i]Miscellaneous Sermons

Title:                           ÒThe Truth in ChristÓ

Text:                            Romans 9:1-33

Subject:                     Sovereignty, Justice, and Grace

Reading:       Jeremiah 18:1-23

Introduction:

My text is, without question, among professed Christians, the most ignored, the most despised, and the most controversial chapter in entire Bible. Can you guess what it is? I do not doubt that some, even in this congregation, have never heard a sermon from it. When it is quoted, religious people immediately start to boil inside and erupt with furious rage. Yet, it is one of the most blessed chapters to be found in the Book of God.

á      No chapter in this Book more thoroughly exalts and glorifies the Triune Jehovah, our great and glorious God.

á      No portion of Holy Scripture gives more hope to sinners. None give poor, helpless, lost, needy, doomed, damned sinners greater encouragement and reason to trust Christ. — Oh, sinner, IÕve got good news for you! Oh, may God give me your attention!

á      No chapter can be found in the Word of God that is more instructive for, more comforting to, or more fully encourages hope in GodÕs saints than my text.

á      And there is no portion of Inspiration that more inspires or more thoroughly compels saved sinners to give themselves in utter devotion and consecration to God than the chapter I have chosen for my text.

á      I can think of no passage of Scripture that gives me more excitement and encouragement in preaching the Gospel than my text.

Do I have your attention? — Open your Bibles with me to the 9th chapter of the Book of Romans (Romans 9:1-33). The title of my message is — ÒThe Truth in Christ.Ó — Romans chapter 9 — ÒThe Truth in Christ.Ó

A Matter of Great Heaviness

1st Romans 9 begins with the Apostle Paul expressing a matter of great heaviness and sorrow to his soul. The Jews, the nation of Israel, PaulÕs kinsmen, his blood relatives, brothers, sisters, mother, and father, who had been so greatly privileged as to be given the Word of God, the prophets, the ordinances of the law, and even kinship with the Lord Jesus Christ, had utterly rejected the Gospel, despised Christ, crucified the Lord of Glory, and brought upon themselves the wrath and judgment of God by their rebellion and unbelief. — Their self-imposed eternal ruin, broke the ApostleÕs heart! They were going to hell, and Paul was broken-hearted as he contemplated that fact.

(Romans 9:1-3) ÒI say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, (2) That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. (3) For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.Ó

Listen to YoungÕs Literal Translation of these verses, and I think you will see them in clearer light.

(Romans 9:1-3) ÒTruth I say in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing testimony with me in the Holy Spirit, (2) that I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart— (3) for I was wishing, I myself, to be anathema from the Christ—for my brethren, my kindred, according to the flesh.Ó

The Jewish people hated Paul intensely. Nothing could surpass the malice of they had against the man they looked upon as the vilest apostate in the world, because he had become a follower of Christ, the Nazarene. But PaulÕs heart broke for them.

We must not judge PaulÕs words merely by strict rules of grammar, but as an expression of a heavy, broken heart. Paul is not here giving arguments of logic, but an expression heartfelt grief.

á      Before he knew the Lord, before God saved him, before Christ was revealed in him, Saul of Tarsus wished to have nothing to do with Christ. Fighting with all his being to sustain and promote Judaism, Paul was an utter terrorist against Christ and Christianity, against Christ, his Church, and the Gospel.

á      But I am convinced that Paul is talking about another great grief and heaviness. — He had been, up to this point, throughout his life as a believer, devoted to the salvation of his nation, his people, his family, the Jews. — He was willing to die that they might live, and proved it by the things he suffered to preach the Gospel to them (Acts 20:20-24; 21:10-13).

(Acts 20:24) ÒBut none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.Ó

(Acts 21:13) ÒThen Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.Ó

Paul loved his family dearly, and was willing to die that they might know Christ and be saved by his grace.I know something about that. DonÕt you?

Wasted Privileges

2nd — Next, in verses 4 and 5, Paul shows us what wasted, misused, misspent privileges the Jews had. — In verses 4 and 5, Paul is not asking a question, but stating a fact. These two verses are a continuation of the sentence begun verse 3.

(Romans 9:3-5) ÒFor I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: ——— (4) Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; (5) Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.Ó

This is the thing that troubled Paul so much concerning the Jews. They had such extraordinary privileges, and were now cast away, reprobate and damned as a nation.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of men, was one of their own race, bone of their bone, flesh of their flesh. Yet they would not have him, or be saved by him (John1:11-13). Oh, the terrible hardness of the human heart! What poor things the greatest privileges are unless the grace of God goes with them to give us faith in Christ! — Be warned!

Purpose Sure

3rd — After expressing such great heaviness and sorrow, the Apostle seems to brace himself up, he seems to console his own heart, as he assures himself and us (in verses 6-8) that GodÕs purpose is sure. GodÕs elect shall be saved.

(Romans 9:6-8) ÒNot as though the Word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: (7) Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. (8) That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.Ó

Paul says here exactly the same thing David did, by which he consoled himself upon his deathbed.

(2 Samuel 23:5) ÒAlthough my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.Ó

The blessings of GodÕs grace do not come to anyone according to carnal descent. Yes, God promised to bless the seed of Abraham, but Paul uses that word ÒseedÓ in a very special sense. — AbrahamÕs seed is Christ. And AbrahamÕs seed is all the host of GodÕs elect in Christ.

á      God promised salvation to his elect before the worlds were made.

á      Christ came here to redeem and save GodÕs elect, taking on him the seed of Abraham (Hebrews2:16).

á      GodÕs elect shall be saved.

If my dear, dear kinsmen perish, if those I love, those for whom I would at this moment lay down my life, if that might be used of God to cause them to trust my Savior, if they perish under the wrath of God, it will be because they have refused to trust the Lord Jesus Christ.

á      GodÕs word of promise, GodÕs purpose, GodÕs decree will not be altered.

á      GodÕs elect will yet be saved.

á      God, the God of all the earth, will still be right and just, faithful and true, good, and wise, and gracious.

Abraham had two sons, Ishmael and Isaac. God passed by Ishmael (his firstborn) and chose Isaac. And Abraham bowed to God, worshipped God, and devoted his whole life to God because of his great goodness, mercy, love, and grace heaped upon him. — God, my God, give me grace to walk in the steps of faithful Abraham!

Election and Reprobation

4thNext, in verses 9-13, the inspired Apostle shows us GodÕs word of promise, GodÕs decree that must be fulfilled, his decree of both election and reprobation.

(Romans 9:9-13) ÒFor this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. (10) And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; (11) (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) (12) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. (13) As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.Ó

Here were two children born at the same time, twins, born to the same parents. Yet, Esau was not numbered among the chosen Òseed Esau was not chosen of God. Jacob was. Why? God himself answers the question with utmost clarity.

á    ÒJacob have I loved.Ó

á    ÒBut Esau have I hated.Ó

It matters not how closely you may be connected with the people of God, unless God saves you, you will not be saved. You cannot and will not be saved unlessÉ

á      God the Father chose you to salvation.

á      God the Son redeemed you by his blood.

á      And God the Spirit calls you by his irresistible power, omnipotent mercy, and life-giving grace.

And if you go to hell, you will not, in anyway alter GodÕs purpose, mar his goodness, or corrupt his righteousness. Your eternal damnation will be your own fault alone!

Infidels Answered

5th — As soon as we mention anything about election, predestination, Divine sovereignty, limited atonement, irresistible grace, or (Heaven forbid!) reprobation, religious infidels scream, ÒThatÕs not fair! ThatÕs not right! How can God find any fault with sinners, how can he judge, if heÕs already determined everything?Ó — Read verses 14-16, and you will see how to answer the infidelÕs objections.

Commonly, we think and we teach others to think that the way to deal with people who despise the Gospel is to give up everything to the infidel, console him in his unbelief, and then say heÕs beginning to coming to see the doctrines of grace. — No! ThatÕs the best way to keep the infidel an infidel.

The only way to deal with people who hate God is to confront them with GodÕs truth precisely at the point of their rebellion. Give up nothing. If the truth is objectionable, if possible, make it more objectionable to proud flesh. Put the very hardest side it has right in the face of the infidel and to say, ÒThis is GodÕs truth; refuse it at your peril!Ó That is exactly what Paul does in verses 14-16.

(Romans 9:14-16) ÒWhat shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. (15) For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. (16) So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.Ó

Vessels of Wrath and

Vessels of Mercy

6th — Now, letÕs read verses 17-26. Here God the Holy Ghost speaks as plainly as possible about vessels of wrath and vessels of mercy, asserting in the clearest, most forceful terms possible both the absolute sovereignty of God and the righteousness of Divine judgment.

(Romans 9:17-26) ÒFor the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. (18) Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. (19) Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? (20) Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? (21) Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? (22) What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: (23) And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, (24) Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? (25) As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. (26) And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.Ó

Chosen Remnant

7th — In verses 27-29 we are again reminded and assured of the fact that there is in this world a chosen remnant who must and shall be saved by the grace of God.

(Romans 9:27-29) ÒEsaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: (28) For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. (29) And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.Ó

á      ÒHe will finish the work.Ó God will accomplish all his purpose. He cast off and destroyed Israel after the flesh as a nation suddenly and swiftly in 70 AD and sent the Gospel to the Gentiles.

á      He will Òcut it short in righteousness.Ó He will finish the work speedily. And he will do it in righteousness. He is a just God and a Savior. And he is a just Judge, who must and shall do right.

á      Were it not for GodÕs election, ChristÕs redemption, and the SpiritÕs grace, the whole human race would become a world of Sodomites, justly deserving judgment of t Alighty and righteously damned forever in the fire of GodÕs wrath in hell!

Stumbling Stone

Foundation Stone

8th Is Christ and his Gospel to you a stumbling stone over which you are stumbling into hell in rebellion and unbelief? Or is the Lord Jesus Christ the Foundation Stone upon which you are built? Read verses 30-33, and we will see.

(Romans 9:30-33) ÒWhat shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. (31) But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. (32) Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; (33) As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.Ó

Sinners, who have no hope of righteousness, are made righteous by GodÕs free grace in Christ, without doing a thing. They are Òvessels of mercy afore prepared to glory.Ó

á      Made Righteous by Redemption

á      Made Righteous by Regeneration

á      Made Righteous by Resurrection

Righteous men and women, folks who think they are righteous, go to hell, stumbling over the Stumbling Stone, because you refuse to trust Christ. They are Òvessels of wrath fitted to destructionÓ (1 Peter 2:6-10; Isaiah 28:14-22).

(1 Peter 2:6-10) ÒWherefore also it is contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. (7) Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, (8) And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. (9) But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: (10) Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.Ó

(Isaiah 28:14-22) ÒWherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. (15) Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: (16) Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. (17) Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. (18) And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. (19) From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report. (20) For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. (21) For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act. (22) Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.Ó

Would you have GodÕs salvation? Hear his Word. — ÒWhosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed!Ó — ThatÕs Òthe truth in Christ!Ó

Jeremiah 18:1-23

(1) The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, (2) Arise, and go down to the potterÕs house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

(3) Then I went down to the potterÕs house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. (4) And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

(5) Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, (6) O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potterÕs hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. (7) At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; (8) If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. (9) And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; (10) If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

(11) Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now everyone from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good. (12) And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will everyone do the imagination of his evil heart.

(13) Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. (14) Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken? (15) Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up; (16) To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head. (17) I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

(18) Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

(19) Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. (20) Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them. (21) Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle. (22) Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet. (23) Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
