ALL THE FULNESS OF THE GODHEAD IN CHRIST

"In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” – Colossians 2:9

All the fulness of the eternal Godhead, all the fulness of the Father, all the fulness of the Son, and all the fulness of the Spirit dwells in the body of our Lord Jesus Christ! All the perfections and attributes of the infinite, incomprehensible, triune God reside in the body of the Man Christ Jesus, for that Man, Jesus Christ, is God.

Great Humiliation

God the Son assumed our nature. God took on himself a body of flesh and blood that he might redeem and save his people. But he never ceased to be God. Even in his greatest humiliation as a Man, our Savior fully possessed all the attributes of deity. He veiled his divine glory in the days of his humiliation; but he never laid aside his godhead. He never ceased to be God! Even when he was tempted, he is holy. Even when he was hungry, he possesses all things. Even when he was weak, he is strength. Even when he was in agony, he is Almighty. Even when he was arrested, he rules all things. Even when he was forsaken by God the Father, he is God the Son! Even when he died upon the cross and his body slept in the dark, damp tomb for three days, Jesus Christ is life.

He is God over all, blessed forever! He immutably and eternally possesses all the attributes of divinity. It is true, our Savior wrapped up his deity in a human body. And he hid his radiant glory as God for a time. But he never lost, gave up, or laid aside one particle of deity, not even when he died as our Substitute!

Divine Attributes

Is God self-existent? So is Jesus Christ. In him is life (John 1:3). Is God eternal, without beginning of days or end of years? So is Christ, the One who was, who is, and who is to come, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last (Col. 1:15-17; Heb. 7:3; Rev. 1:8). Is God omnipresent? So is Christ. While here, dwelling upon the earth, he was in the Father's bosom in heaven (John 1:18; 3:13). And though he is now seated in heaven, he is God present with his people (Matt. 18:20; 28:20). Is God omniscient? So is Christ. He ever knew what was in man. He told the Samaritan woman all that she had ever done, and exposed the secret thoughts of his enemies (John 2:24; 4:29; 6:64; Matt. 9:4). Is God omnipotent? So is Christ. By his own power he created, sustains, and rules all things, and is able to subdue all things unto himself (Col.1:16-17; Phil. 3:21). Is God immutable? So is Jesus Christ. He is God who changes not, the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Heb. 13:8). All that God is, Jesus Christ is, fully, completely, and absolutely. The man, Jesus Christ, who is our Savior, is himself the eternal God.

Beholding the Man Christ Jesus, every believing heart rejoices to confess, with Isaiah, “Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation” (Isa. 25:9).
