Nursery Duty Today Celeste Peterson

ÒBy the Right WayÓ Don Fortner

(Tune: #118 — When I Survey the Wondrous Cross — LM)

1.    Let us proclaim JehovahÕs praise,

And quietly rest in all His ways:

He keeps eternity in sight,

And what His hand performs is right.

2.    ÒBy the right wayÓ His saints are led,

The way ordained for each we tread:

The way our carnal natures hate,

Though itÕs our path to heavenÕs gate.

3.    ÒBy the right way,Ó oft dark and rough,

Mysterious, yet plain enough:

And when our faith is changed to sight,

WeÕll know the way of God was right.

4.    ÒBy the right way,Ó through pain and loss

And earthly expectations crossed,

With Òan expected endÓ in view,

WeÕll trust our God, Faithful and True.

5.    ÒBy the right way,Ó Lord lead me on,

Through this vain world, up to Your throne:

Cause faith to know, when reason fails,

That God always does all things well!

Two Natures

Pastor Todd Nibert

The believer has the new nature that never sins and the old nature that always sins. This does not provide him with an excuse for sin nor a reason to not battle his sin. But it does explain why he is so sinful. Amazingly and mysteriously it is the new man that owns and confesses the sins of the old man!

ÒHerein is Our Love made PerfectÓ

1 John 4:17

ÒHerein is our love made perfect.Ó Those words, as suggested by our translators in the margin of our Bible, might be better translated, ÒHerein is his love with us made perfect.Ó

John is not talking about us loving God perfectly or loving one another perfectly. Our love is anything but perfect love. John is talking to us about the knowledge and revelation of GodÕs perfect love for us in Christ in the sweet experience of his saving grace. He is here describing the Ògrace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.Ó

GodÕs love toward us, which is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost in the saving revelation of Christ, is made perfect in us when we are made to see and experience and enjoy the fulness, completion, and perfection of our salvation in Christ.

GodÕs love is made perfect in us (1 John 4:12), it is brought to its end and fulfilment, when it is made known in us, when we are born of God and given faith in Christ. Then it is that Òthe love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy GhostÓ (Romans 5:1-5).

ÒThat We may have Boldness in the Day of JudgmentÓ

1 John 4:17

There is a day appointed when God shall judge the world in righteousness and strict justice. In that day, though the wicked and unbelieving tremble and fear, the saints of God will have confidence, joy, and boldness.

ÒBold shall I stand in that great day,

For who ought to my charge shall lay,

While through ChristÕs blood absolved I am

From sinÕs tremendous guilt and blame?Ó

The wicked and unbelieving fear the Day of Judgment. Many have nightmares about it. But GodÕs saints love it, long for it, and anxiously await it; at least we ought to.

In that great day, we shall stand fearless, without the least dread, while the rest of the world cries for the rocks and mountains to fall upon them and hide them from the wrath of God and the Lamb. In that great day, when God shall judge the world in righteousness by Christ Jesus, GodÕs elect will have boldness. In that day we will speak to him who sits upon the throne freely and without fear. We will ascribe all praise, honor, and glory to Christ alone as our Savior. And we will express our love and adoration to our God forever.

HereÕs the reason. — ÒBecause as he is, so are we in this world.Ó If at this very moment you trust Christ, if you have just this moment been born of God, this text is talking about you. As Christ is, so are you in this world! It is our union and identification with Christ that will give us boldness in the Day of Judgment. Everything that the Lord Jesus Christ is, in his office capacity as our Mediator, Representative, and Substitute before God, we are in him. — ThatÕs astounding!

Spoilers Spoiled

Isaiah 33:1

C. H. Spurgeon

Oh! How glorious it is to see the confusion of GodÕs enemies! Some say the devil is wise, but he is a fool, and he has been a fool from the very beginning. All he has ever done is to throw stones into the sky which have fallen down upon his own head. He always shoots his arrows the wrong end foremost.

When the whole of this worldÕs drama shall come to an end, there will be one tremendous laugh from earth and heaven against the devil, for they will say, ÒAha! Aha! Aha! He has been GodÕs drudge all the while. He has been but GodÕs drudge, working out GodÕs glory. He thought he was having his own way, and doing his own will. — He has been but a black slave to carry the materials out of which God shall bring forth triumphs that shall shine throughout eternity.Ó

Three Witnesses to Redemption Accomplished

1 John 5:7

ÒThere are three that bear record in heaven.Ó — Bear record of what? That Jesus is the Son of God? No. Heaven needs no evidence of that. These three bear record in heaven that God has given us eternal life, in strict accordance with his just and righteous law, by the merits of ChristÕs obedience and death as our Substitute. The three Persons of the Holy Trinity bear record in heaven that Christ has accomplished redemption for GodÕs elect by his blood atonement.

1. God the Father bears record that redemption is accomplished by his acceptance of Christ as our Representative and Surety (Hebrews 1:1-9; 6:19-20; 10:11-14). When the Father raised Christ from the dead and received him back into heaven as our Mediator, he accepted all his elect in Christ and bare record that redemptionÕs work was done (Ephesians 1:6; John 17:1-5).

2. God the Son, the living, eternal Word of God, the second Person of the blessed Trinity, bears record of his peopleÕs right to eternal life by his perpetual advocacy and intercession at the FatherÕs right hand (Romans 8:34; 1 John 2:1-2; Hebrews 7:24-25; Hebrews 6:20). The record he bears, which secures the eternal salvation of GodÕs elect, by which we merit heaven and eternal life, is twofold: — His righteousness as our Representative and his satisfaction as our Substitute.

3. God the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, bears record of the accomplishment of redemption by effectually applying the blood of Christ to the hearts of GodÕs elect in effectual calling (John 16:14; Hebrews 9:13-14). The Spirit of God takes the merit of ChristÕs blood and righteousness and reveals to GodÕs elect their acceptance with God by the gospel. In effectual calling, chosen, redeemed sinners hear the gospel. But they hear more than the bare word of the gospel. They hear the Spirit of God speak in their hearts. Each one hears God speak pardon to his own soul by the gospel of his salvation. — ÒIn whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise (Ephesians 1:13). ÒAnd these three are one.Ó The three Divine Persons are one God. But more, the record of the Father, the record of the Son, and the record of the Spirit are one. What is that record? — Redemption is accomplished by Christ alone.
