They Shall Return to God — Don Fortner

Christ Jesus ransomed His elect, from everlasting woe;

And He will keep those ransomed souls, until His grace they know.

The ransom price He paid was blood — (His sin-atoning blood!),

And justice satisfied demands — they shall return to God!

Whatever may oppose, they shall, compelled by grace, come home,

Come home to God by faith in Christ, rejoicing, they shall come!

They shall obtain endless delight, and everlasting joy. —

They shall possess the realms of light, and blessed rest enjoy.

Sorrows, and pains, and sighs shall flee away from their abode;

And their transported souls shall see their Savior and their God.

“He shall not Fail”

Isaiah 42:4

We trust an undefeated and undefeatable Savior. — “He shall not fail!” The Son of God can never be frustrated in his purpose, defeated in his design, or hindered in his work. Christ was not conquered at Calvary. He conquered. He did not die as the helpless victim of circumstances. He died as the Lord of all things, the one who rules all circumstances. And he will not be defeated in the end. — “He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied!” The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ shall never be discovered a miscarriage. The Lion of the tribe of Judah must prevail. The Word of God universally proclaims the infallible efficacy of Christ’s atonement. That which the Son of God accomplished at Calvary was an effectual atonement for all the sins of God’s elect. The gospel of God is the revelation of the glorious, absolute, saving efficacy of Christ’s atonement. All for whom the Son of God suffered the wrath of God shall be made the righteousness of God in him!

“God that Beareth Iniquity”

“He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

The Lord Jesus is not here said to have our sin imputed to him, though sin was, indeed, imputed to our Substitute. It was justly laid to his charge. That is because “He hath made him sin for us.” But as far as the words of Holy Scripture are concerned, it is nowhere stated in the Book of God that sin was imputed to the Lord Jesus Christ. There is not a single passage in the Bible that speaks of our sins being imputed to our Savior.

In Romans 4 the word “imputation” or its equivalent (accounting or reckoning) is used seven times. It is mentioned again in chapter 5 (v. 13). But in those places God the Holy Spirit speaks of sin not being imputed to us and of righteousness being imputed to us. Yes, our sins were imputed to our dear Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, when he was made sin for us, and because “He hath made him sin for us.” But the Word of God never uses the word impute, or any word like it, to speak of sin being imputed to Christ.

The Book of God declares, “He hath made him sin for us.” I am fully aware that natural reason opposes it. And many have endeavored to make the Word of God say something else. We are told that Christ had sin imputed to him, that he bore the guilt of sin, that he was charged with the debt of our sins, that he became accountable for our sins, that he bore all the effects of our sins, and that he was treated as if he were sin. But this plain, straightforward, blessed statement of Holy Scripture is almost universally denied by men. — “He hath made him sin for us.” Still, there it stands. — “He hath made Him sin for us.” How can this be? What can it mean?

In human law and reason among men, I fully acknowledge that guilt cannot be transferred, but only its effects. Among the sons of men, a third person may cancel my debts, but not my crimes. But this text of Inspiration is not describing things men can or may do. It tells us what our God has done. And in this great affair of salvation our great God stands infinitely alone. In this, his most glorious work, there is such a display of justice, mercy, wisdom, and power as never entered into the heart of man to conceive. In fact, the Lord God declared by his prophet Habakkuk that this wondrous work of his would not be believed, though most plainly declared. — “Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvelously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you” (Habakkuk 1:5). This wondrous work of our God has no parallel in the actions of mortals. — “Who hath declared this from ancient time? Who hath told it from that time? Have not I the Lord? And there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Savior. There is none beside me” (Isaiah 45:21). Truly, there is none like our God, “a God that beareth iniquity!” That is what the prophet Micah declares. — “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth (BEARETH) iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger forever, because he delighteth in mercy (Micah 7:18).

“The Way of Cain”

The way of Cain represents all who follow the path of freewill/works religion, all who attempt to find acceptance with God upon the basis of something they do.

The way of Cain always involves envy, the envy that motivates false prophets. Cain envied Abel’s acceptance by God. Cain envied his brother because God accepted Abel and his sacrifice.

Jude here tells us that such is the root of all heresy. False prophets, envying the gifts of God bestowed upon his servants and envying the honor put upon faithful gospel preachers by God and his people, seek to draw away disciples after themselves. Like Diotrephes, they love to have the preeminence. They so crave the attention and applause of men that they are willing to destroy immortal souls with their damnable doctrines. — God’s servants are not like them (2 Corinthians 4:5-7).

“The Error of Balaam”

Jude 11

Balaam’s error was greed, the love of money. As all false prophets crave praise and are motivated by envy, so all false prophets are greedy for gain. They fleece the Lord’s sheep to line their own pockets.

Running “greedily after the error of Balaam,” men who have abandoned the gospel of God lead poor, deluded souls under their influence into idolatry, teaching them to mix law with grace, works with mercy, and logic with revelation.

Make no mistake. — These deceivers know exactly what they are doing. Balaam knew that God’s people were blessed of God and could never be cursed. Yet, he took Balak’s money, prayed, acted very pious, and sought the destruction of God’s church, teaching Israel to worship idols and call it worshipping Jehovah. — God’s servants are not like them (2 Corinthians 4:5-7).

“The Gainsaying of Core”

Jude 11

All false prophets are also mimics of Korah. Korah sought to overthrow both God’s prophet Moses and God’s priest Aaron. The Korahs of our day are exactly like them. They oppose God’s faithful servants, seek to turn the people they serve against them and the gospel of God’s rich, free grace in Christ.

Again, their behavior is not a matter of ignorance. They know full well that the men they oppose are God’s servants, and that the gospel they oppose is the gospel of God. But false prophets are, as God the Holy Ghost describes them by Jude’s pen, men of insatiable lusts, sensual, and ungodly. They will stop at nothing to get your smile and pick your pocket. They think no more of destroying a faithful man’s name or destroying a church than they do of stepping on a roach. — God’s servants are not like them (2 Corinthians 4:5-7).
