In Bible terms faith alone is the evidence of GodÕs saving grace (Hebrews 11:1). All other imaginary evidences are broken crutches. If you lean on them, they will cause you much pain.

I Asked the Lord that I Might Grow  John Newton

(Tune: #77 — Sun of My Soul —LM)

1.    I asked the Lord that I might grow

In faith, and love, and every grace;

Might more of His salvation know,

And seek more earnestly His face.

2.    `Twas He who taught me thus to pray,

And He, I trust, has answered prayer;

But it has been in such a way

As almost drove me to despair.

3.    I hoped that in some favoured hour,

At once HeÕd answer my request;

And, by His loveÕs constraining power,

Subdue my sins, and give me rest.

4.    Instead of this, He made me feel

The hidden evils of my heart,

And let the angry powers of hell

Assault my soul in every part.

5.    Yea, more, with His own hand He seemed

Intent to aggravate my woe;

Crossed all the fair designs I schemed,

Blasted my gourds, and laid me low.

6.    ÒLord, why is this?Ó I trembling cried;

ÒWilt Thou pursue Thy worm to death?Ó

Ò`Tis in this way,Ó the Lord replied,

ÒI answer prayer for grace and faith.Ó

7.    ÒThese inward trials I employ,

From self and pride to set thee free;

And break thy schemes of earthly joy,

That thou mayst seek thy all in Me.Ó

ÒA Figure of Him that was to ComeÓ

Romans 5:14

In Genesis 3:22 the Lord God declares ÒBehold, the man is become as one of us.Ó What an astounding statement that is! What can it mean?

Trinity

When Moses wrote, ÒThe Lord God said,Ó who did he have in mind? It is Jehovah-Elohim speaking; but he says, ÒThe man has become as one of us.Ó One Person is speaking, but more than one person is represented. The Person speaking is Christ, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God, Jehovah-Elohim. He is speaking for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. In that one sentence we have set before us the plurality of persons in the eternal Godhead, the eternal Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the preexistence of our Savior before his incarnation. But what do these words mean? — ÒThe man is become as one of us.Ó

Adam a Type

As God the Holy Ghost declares, our father Adam was Òthe figure of him that was to come.Ó Nowhere do we see the love of Christ for his church set forth so fully as in the case of AdamÕs love for Eve. The popular notion is that Eve beguiled Adam. Eve did nothing of the kind. Satan beguiled her, allured her by deception into sin and rebellion against God. But the Spirit of God tells us plainly that ÒAdam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgressionÓ (1 Timothy 2:14). Adam was not deceived to any degree, neither by the devil nor by his wife. He knew exactly what he was doing, and sinned with his eyes wide open. He saw his cherished wife, Eve, in the depths of her guilt and shame; and out of nothing but love for her, before he would be parted from her, he would be damned with her. He cleaved to his wife, for they were one flesh. And into ruin he plunged himself for her sake. In all this he was the figure of our blessed Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who was to come, for so it was with our dear blessed Redeemer. Moved by nothing but his love for us, before he would be parted from us, he plunged himself into our sin, our guilt, and our death, that he might save us from everlasting ruin (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Made Like Christ

ÒBehold, the man is become as one of us.Ó — This is also a declaration of AdamÕs present state and condition, and of ours in Christ. Though fallen by nature, we are now, as Adam was, restored by grace. What God here says of Adam is true of every believer. Though in Adam we fell, in Christ we are restored, just like Adam was by the sacrifice of the Lamb of God and call of omnipotent grace.

Like Adam, we have been clothed with ChristÕs righteousness, and we are Òmade the righteousness of God in himÓ (2 Corinthians 5:21), made Òrighteous, even as he is righteousÓ (1 John 3:7; Jeremiah 23:6; 33:16). Like Adam, being renewed by grace, we are now created in the image of Christ, conformed to him, created new by the grace of God Òin righteousness and true holinessÓ (Ephesians 4:24), made Òpartakers of the divine natureÓ (2 Peter 1:4). Like Adam, having been called from darkness to light in Christ, we now know both good and evil. We know both the goodness of God and the evil of our own hearts. Like Adam, we have become as one of the Holy Trinity; we have become like Christ our Mediator. — ÒAnd as he is, so are we in this worldÓ (1 John 4:17).

ÒIt is the blood that maketh atonement.Ó — Leviticus 17:11

The 17th chapter of Leviticus has nothing to do with the imaginary sanctity of animal life. It has nothing to do with the health risks involved in eating red meat, or even with eating red meat rare. Leviticus 17, like all the rest of this Inspired Volume, is all about the gospel. It is all about Christ. There are two things revealed in this chapter. They are lessons of tremendous importance. We must learn them. Without the knowledge of these two things, we will never understand the Book of God, the gospel of God, or the work of God. These two lessons are vital.

Christ the Way

All worship except the worship of God through the blood atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ is idolatry; and all idolatry is the worship of devils (Leviticus 17:1-10). Christ is the Way. There is no other. Christ is the Truth. There is no other. Christ is the Life. There is no other. Will we ever learn this? Christ is the Door. There is no other. All who attempt to come in some other way are thieves and robbers, thieves who would rob God of his glory. God will not tolerate them. After giving the law regarding the day of atonement, the Lord God gave commandment to the children of Israel requiring that they bring their sacrifices to him at the door of the tabernacle, that they offer sacrifices nowhere else except at his altar. It was a commandment which he required every Israelite to observe, and a commandment he required every stranger who sojourned among them to observe. Any who refused to do so were to be cut off from among the people of God, put out of the camp, banished from the church. Remember the context. The Lord had just finished declaring to Israel that they were to observe the Day of Atonement every year on the tenth day of the seventh month. This was made as an everlasting statute (Leviticus 16:29-34). Everything required in this statute portrayed our Lord Jesus Christ in his great work of redemption. The high priest made atonement for the holy sanctuary, the tabernacle of the congregation, the altar, himself, the priests, and for all the people of the congregation of the Lord. That is a picture of particular redemption. By the sin-atoning blood of Christ, GodÕs Israel has been cleansed, made clean from all sin before him (1 John 3:5). That great and glorious day, when Israel saw redemption ceremonially accomplished and sin put away by GodÕs sacrifice, was Òa sabbath of restÉby a statute forever.Ó That is a picture of the blessed rest of faith. Not only do we cease from our works, we rest in him who has done all for us.

Blood Atonement

The Lord God says, ÒI have given it (the blood) to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your soulsÓ (Leviticus 17:11). The blood of our Lord Jesus Christ was shed at Calvary for one specific purpose: — ÒTo make atonement for your souls.Ó Will it do the job? Is it enough? What does God say? — Òfor it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.Ó Yes, the blood of Christ poured out upon the cursed tree accomplished precisely what God intended. His blood made atonement for his people! Just as the blood of the paschal lamb made atonement for the whole congregation of Israel, so the blood of Christ our Passover, who was sacrificed for us, made atonement for all GodÕs Israel (Romans 5:6-11). It is not the blood and something else. The word is most explicit. It attributes atonement exclusively to the blood (Hebrews 9: 22). Only in this way can God be both Òa just God and a Savior.Ó Only by the blood can he be both Just and the Justifier of all who believe.
