Divine sovereignty, total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and the certain preservation of GodÕs elect are like salt and pepper and bread and butter on the table. Wherever the gospel feast is spread they are always on table.

God Moves in a Mysterious Way William Cowper

(Tune: #11 — When All Thy Mercies, O My God —CM)

1.    God moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea

And rides upon the storm.

2.    Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never-failing skill

He treasures up His bright designs,

And works His sovereign will.

3.    Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

The clouds you so much dread

Are big with mercy and will break

With blessings on your head.

4.    His purposes will ripen fast,

Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flower.

5.    Blind unbelief is sure to err

And scan His works in vain;

God is His own interpreter,

And He will make it plain.

Ten Great Blessings of Grace

ÒBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.Ó (Ephesians 1:3)

Here are ten of those spiritual blessings God has given to his elect in Christ, which shall never be taken away from us. If you are a believer, if you are in Christ, these ten things are yours to enjoy forever.

1.    ELECTION (Ephesians 1:4) — Election is GodÕs choice of you. Imagine that, God himself chose to save you before the world began! If you are saved, you are saved because God chose you. The Lord chose you because he loved you.

2.    ADOPTION (1 John 3:1-2) — All whom God the Father elected to salvation, he predestinated unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, Òto the praise of the glory of his grace

3.    REDEMPTION (1 Peter 1:18-21) — We were under the curse of GodÕs law, sentenced to eternal death. But ÒChrist hath redeemed us from the curse of the law!Ó

4.    REGENERATION (Ephesians 2:1-7) — We were dead in sin. But God the Holy Spirit has raised us from death to life by his almighty grace. This is the new birth. This is the blessing of Abraham Christ died to obtain for us, when he redeemed us from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:14)

5.    JUSTIFICATION (Romans 3:24) — GodÕs dear Son paid our debt by the shedding of his blood. Having paid our debt, we are now made to be the righteousness of God in him.

6.    SANCTIFICATION (1 Corinthians 6:11) — If you are saved, you are sanctified in Christ, set apart by GodÕs election, declared holy by the SonÕs obedience, and made holy by the SpiritÕs regeneration.

7.    PRESERVATION (John 10:27-28) — If you are in Christ, you are saved forever. Salvation is forever, because salvation is GodÕs work (Ecclesiastes 3:14).

8.    PROVIDENCE (Romans 8:28) — Our lives are governed by the hand of our heavenly Father, directed by his infinite wisdom, and guided by his everlasting love.

9.    GLORIFICATION (1 Corinthians 15:45-53) — In the resurrection we shall be perfectly conformed to the image of Christ and made to inherit all that Christ inherited as our Mediator! We are joint-heirs with Christ. We shall be partakers of his glory (John 17:5, 22).

10. FAITH (Ephesians 2:8-9) — All the blessings and privileges of grace are given to faith. And faith itself is the gift of GodÕs grace (Philippians 1:29). Faith is the fruit and work of God the Holy Ghost. As he gives faith, we have faith. And that faith that is in us by the operation of GodÕs almighty, free grace receives and enjoys all the blessings of grace. Faith comes from Christ, looks to Christ, and consummates in Christ. What a privilege of grace it is to live in this world by faith in Christ!

Romans 8:28

ÒWe know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose

This is not a blanket promise made to all men. God never promises to do all men good. His providence is not engaged for the eternal welfare of all men. But he does promise to do some men good, and nothing but good. His providence is engaged for the eternal welfare of some men. To them the promise is sure. If you fit the character of the ones described in this promise, you may claim the promise with absolute confidence. LetÕs examine the promise, word by word and phrase by phrase, as it stands in the eighth chapter of Romans.

We Know

ÒWeÓ who are born-again by GodÕs almighty grace, redeemed by Christ, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and live by faith in the hope of eternal glory, Òwe know.Ó Being taught by God the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts and gives us understanding in Holy Scripture, we have an intuitive and confident knowledge of GodÕs good providence. — ÒWe know that all things,Ó both good and bad, prosperous and adverse, pleasant and painful, Òwork together.Ó The many things that exist and the many things that happen in our lives are not independent and isolated. They are gears in the machinery of divine providence, all working together. Being under divine control and ordered by divine arrangement, all the affairs, events, creatures, and men in the universe are manipulated by our heavenly Father, so that Òall things work together for good.Ó Though any event of life, singled out and standing alone, may seem terribly evil, when it is viewed as one spoke in the great wheel of divine providence, we see that it is truly good. It may be a physical evil; but it is working for spiritual good. It may be a temporal evil; but it shall surely bring eternal good.

To Them

To whom is this great promise made? ÒTo them that love God.Ó If there is in my heart a genuine love for God as he is revealed in Holy Scripture, he created that love, because he loves me. — ÒWe love him, because he first loved us.Ó If I love him, it is evidence that he loves me and will do me good, nothing but good. — ÒTo them who are the calledÓ — Those who love God are those who have been singled out from eternity as the objects of his grace and separated unto him by the irresistible, effectual call of the Holy Ghost which gives life to dead sinners, creating in us faith and love toward God. If you are one of the called ones, this promise is to you.

His Purpose

The promise is sure, because it is Òaccording to his purpose.Ó If you would understand the Bible and understand anything about the events of this world, you must be made to realize that all things in this world and all things in your life come to pass Òaccording to his purpose.Ó ÒWe know,Ó according to the purpose of his revelation, ÒAll things work together,Ó according to his purpose of predestination. ÒAll things work together for good,Ó because God in eternity purposed to do us good, and he rules the universe Òaccording to his purpose.Ó We love God according to the purpose of his love toward us. And we have been called to life eternal in Christ according to the purpose of his grace.
