Atonement is the expiation of sin, the canceling of debt, the pardoning of iniquity, the removal of transgression, the taking away of guilt by the satisfaction of justice. In the Old Testament sacrifices, the atonement was only ceremonial. But the atonement made by our Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary was and is effectual. All those for whom the Lamb of God was slain are by his blood freed from all sin, all debt, all iniquity, all transgression, and all guilt before the thrice holy God.

I Saw One Hanging on a Tree — John Newton

1. In evil long I took delight, unawed by shame or fear;

‘Till a new object struck my sight, and stopped my wild career.

2. I saw One hanging on a tree, in agonies and blood;

Limited Atonement

In the term “limited atonement” the word “limited” means Christ died only for the elect. “Atonement” means Christ made God and his people “at-one.” The other name for this doctrine is “particular redemption.” “Particular” means the same as “limited” and “redemption” means by Christ’s blood he purchased his people from the curse and condemnation of the law.

The Day of Atonement

“Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.” (Leviticus 23:27)

The most important and most instructive of all the typical ceremonies of the Old Testament was the day of atonement. The day of atonement pictured, foreshadowed, and typified the sin-atoning work of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our great high Priest, our substitutionary sacrifice for sin, our scapegoat, our altar, and our mercy-seat, through whom alone sinners have access to and find acceptance with the holy Lord God.

Mercy and Truth

In order for the holy Lord God to deal with sinful men and women in mercy, grace, and peace, without compromising his character and violating his justice, there had to be a day of atonement. A holy, just, and true God could never allow fallen, sinful man to live before him, unless a suitable atonement is made for man’s sin. Justice must be vindicated. Sin must be punished. Else God and man can never come together in peace. Therefore, God ordained that a day of atonement be observed in Israel once a year, as a picture and pledge of the great day of atonement to be accomplished at Calvary by the slaying of the Lamb of God for the redemption of his elect.

Specific Instructions

The Lord God gave Moses meticulous, detailed instructions about how the day of atonement was to be observed in the 16^th chapter of Leviticus.

1. The day of atonement was ordained and initiated by God himself. This was no human invention (Leviticus 23:27-28; 25:9). The same is true of our Redeemer’s death at Calvary (Job 33:24).

2. The day of atonement was set for a specific time each year (Leviticus 16:29) — “The seventh month, on the tenth day of the month.” God’s great day of atonement was set, fixed, appointed, and determined by God himself. Nothing was left to chance! “When the fulness of time was come” God’s dear Son was sacrificed for us.

3. There was only one day of atonement each year. Why? Because Christ was to make only one offering for sin. — “Now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself, — Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many” (Hebrews 9:26, 28).

4. The sacrifices offered on the day of atonement were only typical. They could never put away sin (Hebrews 10:1-4).

5. All these typical, ceremonial sacrifices were fulfilled by Christ and have ceased because Christ fulfilled them (Hebrews 10:11-14, 18).

6. All that was done on the day of atonement was done for a specific, chosen people and resulted in God’s blessing upon those people (Leviticus 16:17, 24, 30). So, too, all that the Lord Jesus Christ did at Calvary was done for a specific, chosen people and results in all the blessings of God’s grace and salvation flowing to his redeemed at God’s own appointed time of love.

Limited Atonement

“He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.” (Isaiah 53:8)

We believe the gospel doctrine of Limited Atonement, because that is clearly the doctrine of Holy Scripture. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ suffered and died as the Substitute for his own elect. By God’s intention, design, and purpose, the atonement of Christ is limited to the elect. By his one sin-atoning sacrifice for sin, the Lord Jesus Christ actually accomplished the redemption of the chosen, securing their eternal salvation. The redemptive work of Christ was performed for a particular people (Isaiah 53:8); and the Son of God has effectually accomplished the redemption of those people (Hebrews 9:12).

His Intention

The intention of Christ in the shedding of his blood was the redemption and salvation of his elect. It never was the intention, will, desire, or purpose of the Son of God to redeem and save all men (John 17:9, 20). He laid down his life for his sheep (John 10:11, 15), not his sheep and the goats (John 10:26). According to the Scriptures, the intention of Christ’s atonement and the effects of it are the same. What he intended to do on the cross, he has done. He intended to redeem all God’s elect by satisfying the wrath and justice of God for them. And by his death, all God’s elect have been effectually redeemed from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Their sins have been put away (Hebrews 9:26). Christ has purchased his people with his precious blood (1 Peter 1:18-19). He perfected forever all who were sanctified, or set apart for God, in eternal election (Hebrews 10:14).

Bible Doctrine

Everywhere in the Bible, when the redemptive work of Christ is spoken of and explained, it is described as a particular and effectual redemption. There is not a single exception (Isaiah 53:10-11; Matthew 1:21; John 10:11, 14-18; Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 8:9; Galatians 1:4; 3:13; Ephesians 5:25-27; Titus 2:14; 1 John 3:16; Revelation 1:5; 5:9). The doctrine of the Bible is particular and effectual redemption, limited atonement. The Lord Jesus Christ died for and effectually accomplished the eternal redemption of his chosen people, according to the will of God the Father (2 Corinthians 5:21). We reject as heresy any doctrine that denies the efficacy of Christ’s atonement.

The Question

Really, the question to be answered is not, “For whom did Christ die?” Rather, it is, “Who died?” If Christ died upon the cross to redeem and save all men, and all are not saved, then he is not God, he is not the true Messiah, and all who trust him are lost and yet in their sins! Do you see how vital this doctrine is? Without it, there is no gospel! Without it, there is no salvation! We preach a Redeemer who redeems, a Savior who saves, and an atonement that atones!

“Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransomed church of God be saved to sin no more!”
