Amazing Grace John Newton

1.    Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

2.    ÔTwas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed.

3.    Through many dangers, toils and snares,

I have already come;

ÔTis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

4.    The Lord has promised good to me,

His word my hope secures;

He will my shield and portion be,

As long as life endures.

5.    Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,

And mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the veil,

A life of joy and peace.

6.    The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,

The sun refuse to shine;

But God, who called me here below,

Will be forever mine.

When GodÕs prophet says, ÒTrust ye in the Lord forever,Ó the One he calls for us to trust is Òthe Lord!Ó He who is Jehovah is the Lord. There is no other. He is not one god among many. He is the God, the Lord. Beside him there is no other. He who is the Lord is Jehovah our Savior, the Christ which is, and was, and is to come, eternal, self-existent, and immutable. — He is the Lord! Beside him there is no other. The Triune Jehovah is in Christ (Colossians 2:9-10) and Christ is Jehovah.

The Lord JEHOVAH — The Rock of Ages

ÒTrust ye in the LORD forever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.Ó (Isaiah 26:4)

The triune Jehovah has made Christ, the God-man our Savior, Lord of all. There is no Lord but Christ, no sovereign but Christ. He declares, ÒAll power is given unto me in heaven and in earthÓ (Matthew 28:18). If all power is his, no one has any power but him!

Our Strength

In him is Òeverlasting strength,Ó the strength by which we live, the strength by which we believe, and the strength by which we serve our God. Blessed is that poor mortal who can say, ÒGod is my strengthÓ (2 Samuel 22:33). Blessed is that needy one who can say, ÒThe Lord is my strengthÓ (Psalm 28:7).

      Christ is all our righteousness and all our strength. He is strength. He has strength. And he gives strength to his own, strength for everything for which it is needed. He is the strength by which we endure, escape, and recover from all temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13). Christ Jesus is the strength by which we bear and profit from our afflictions (Isaiah 43:1-3). And our Master is the strength by which we are enabled to perform our duties (Philippians 4:13). In all things, his grace is sufficient for us. And his strength is Òmade perfect,Ó consummated and manifested in its perfection in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Our Rock

The words, Òeverlasting strength,Ó in this text might be read, Òthe Rock of Ages.Ó — The Lord JEHOVAH is Jesus Christ, our God and Savior. And he is the Rock of Ages.

á      The Rock in Whom we take Refuge (Proverbs 18:10)

á      The Rock upon which We are Built (Ephesians 2:20)

á      The Rock upon Whom we Build (Matthew 7:24-25)

á      The Rock that Followed Israel (1 Corinthians 10:4)

á      The Smitten Rock from which the Water of Life Flows to Sinners (Exodus 17:6)

      He who is our Rock is our Strength. And he is the Lord! God, the triune God, was in Christ reconciling the world of his elect unto himself (2 Corinthians 5:17-21). Truly and joyfully, we sing with Moses in defiance of all the imaginary gods of men, ÒTheir rock is not as our RockÓ (Deuteronomy 32:31). Such a God as our God, the Rock of Ages, our Savior, is worthy of our implicit faith and confidence. Therefore, the prophet says to you and me, ÒTrust ye in the LORD forever.Ó

On the Rock of Ages founded, safe retreat for souls oppressed!

Long in desert wilds I wandered. — Here, at last, IÕve found sweet rest!

On the Rock of Ages founded, ÔMid the storms and wrecks of time,

On the Rock of Ages standing, Christ, the Lord JEHOVAH, is mine!

Rock of Ages, Rock of Ages, here secure, in Christ the Lamb!

Rock of Ages, Rock of Ages, here my house securely stands!

For My Dying Friends

ÒThe LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount.Ó (Deuteronomy 1:6)

We are all dying. These mortal bodies shall soon return to the dust. At GodÕs appointed time, these earthly tabernacles shall be dissolved. But we have some friends who know they are dying. Their frames are declining rapidly. Each breath is weaker. Soon they will enter into their everlasting rest with Christ in glory. To you, the Lord Jesus says, ÒYe have dwelt long enough in this mount.Ó Commenting on this word from God our Savior, Robert Hawker wroteÉ

ÒPause, my soul, and remark the gracious words of God to Israel. They were just entering the border of Canaan at that time. Forty years long had they been in a wilderness state: many ups and downs, battles and restings, conflicts and trials. God graciously said, ÔIt is long enough.Õ ÔThere is a rest that remaineth for the people of God.Õ

      Hark, my soul, doth Jesus speak to thee to the same account? Hast thou indeed dwelt long enough in this mount of exercises, sin, sorrow, and temptation? Hast thou seen enough of the emptiness of all creature comforts to satisfy thee? Hast thou felt enough of a body of sin and death, which drags down the soul, to make thee groan under it, being burdened? Is there anything now worth living for? Are not the glories above worth dying for? Doth Jesus call thee, invite thee, allure thee, to come up to the Canaan which he hath taken possession of in the name of his redeemed? And wilt thou not mount up upon the wings of faith, love, and longing desire, to be forever with the Lord? Doth Jesus say thou hast dwelt long enough here below? And wilt thou not say the same? Doth Jesus call thee to his arms? And wilt thou say, ÔNot yet, LordÕ?

      Ah my soul, art thou indeed in love with this prison? Dost thou wish to wear thy chains a little longer? And is this thy kindness to thy friend? Precious Lord, break down every intervening thought or passion that would rob thee of thy glory and my soul of thy presence, and give me to cry out —– ÔHasten, my beloved! And be thou as a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.ÕÓ

            What a joyous prospect! The fact is, GodÕs elect shall never die (John 11:26). When we have Òdwelt long enough in thisÓ house of clay, our souls will soon move out of these earthly bodies into Òan house not made with hands, eternal in the heavensÓ (2 Corinthians 5:1). Our bodies will sleep in the earth until the resurrection morning. Then these bodies shall be raised in the glory of Christ and joined again to our souls. Body and soul in sinless immortality shall forever be with the Lord in life.

We live Òin hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world beganÓ (Titus 1:2). Being justified by his grace, we are Òheirs of God, and joint heirs with ChristÓ (Romans 8:17). Soon, we shall have our inheritance in, with, and by the Lord Jesus Christ. — Oh, blessed hope!
