God Moves in a Mysterious Way William Cowper

(Tune: #42 — All Hail the Power of JesusÕ Name —CM)

1.    God moves in a mysterious way

His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea

And rides upon the storm.

2.    Deep in unfathomable mines

Of never-failing skill

He treasures up His bright designs

And works His sovÕreign will.

3.    Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;

The clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy and shall break

In blessings on your head.

4.    Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

But trust Him for His grace;

Behind a frowning providence

He hides a smiling face.

5.    His purposes will ripen fast,

Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,

But sweet will be the flower.

6.    Blind unbelief is sure to err

And scan His work in vain;

God is His own interpreter,

And He will make it plain.

ÒIt is sweet in our afflictions to eye the LordÕs appointment, and depend upon it. As long as we are enabled to keep in view divine wisdom, we shall never despond by human sufferings.Ó — Robert Hawker

Done!

Hebrews 10:9-14

C. H. Mackintosh once told of an old woman who was a believer witnessing to a lost religious man. The old saint said to her friend, ÒThere is a wide difference between your religion and mine.Ó ÒHow is that?Ó he asked. ÒYour religion,Ó she replied, Òhas only two letters in it and mine has four.Ó

The poor man was one of those religious people, like the rich young ruler, who hope to get to heaven by the things they do, by observing ordinances and ceremonies, keeping the commandments, and doing good works, by what the apostle in the 9th chapter of Hebrews calls Òdead works.Ó But he did not understand what the old saint was saying.

He asked her, ÒWhat do you mean by two letters and four?Ó She replied, ÒYour religion is d-o — Do. Mine is d-o-n-e — Done.Ó ÒDoÓ is the religion of the legalist, the religion of works, the religion of Babylon. ÒDoneÓ is Christianity. ÒDoÓ is the false gospel of antichrist, the lie of Satan. ÒDoneÓ is the proclamation of the gospel, the good news of grace, the truth of God.

D-O-N-E. — Four golden letters! Precious letters! — Done — Precious word of grace! — Who can describe the relief of a guilt-plagued conscience when it discovers that all is done, done more than 2000 years ago on the cross!

The Lord Jesus Christ has done all. He has put away sin. He has Òmagnified the law and made it honorable.Ó The Lord Jesus Christ has vanquished Satan! He has taken the sting out of death and victory from the grave! The Lord Jesus has glorified the Triune God in the very scene in which the Almighty had been dishonored. He brought in everlasting righteousness. All of that, and more, is wrapped up in these four golden letters — D-O-N-E.

ÒDoneÓ is the message of the gospel. Done is GodÕs proclamation of emancipation in the soul of every sinner who trusts the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, may God the Holy Ghost give you life and faith in the ever-blessed Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and graciously cause you to cease from your deadly doing and to rest in ChristÕs eternal — Done!

      Our LordÕs work of redemption is done. His atonement is complete. The sins, which he bore in his body on the tree, have been fully purged away, completely atoned for, and entirely removed. All that Christ came to do he has completely done. The priests of Israel could never sit down, because their work was never done, their sacrifices could never take away sin. — ÒBut this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.Ó The Lord Jesus Christ who redeemed sinners by his blood now reigns in heaven to save every sinner for whom he died by the power of his grace.

ÒNothing, either great or small, nothing, sinner, no;

Jesus did it, did it all, long, long ago.

Cast your deadly doing down, down at JesusÕ feet,

Stand in Him, in Him alone, gloriously complete!Ó

Following After Righteousness

Pastor Marvin Stalnaker

ÒHe that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.Ó (Proverbs 21:21) — What is it to follow after righteousness but to follow after Christ, who is the righteousness of the saints? What is it to follow after mercy but to cast yourself upon him who has mercy and compassion on whomsoever he will? What is it to find life but to, by faith, follow after him who is the Life? What is it to find righteousness but to believe that ChristÕs righteousness robes me? And what is it to find honor before God but to know that I am accepted in the Beloved?

A Believer

John Newton

What a contradiction is a believer to himself! He is called a ÒbelieverÓ emphatically, because he cordially assents to the Word of God. But, alas, how unworthy of the name! If I were to describe him from the Scripture character, I should say he is one who is athirst for God, for his glory, his image, his presence. His affections are fixed upon an unseen Savior. His treasures and, consequently, his thoughts, are on high, beyond the bounds of sense. Having experienced much forgiveness, he is full of bowels of mercy to all around. And having been often deceived by his own heart, he dares trust it no more, but lives by faith in the Son of God, for wisdom, righteousness, and sanctification, and derives from him grace for grace, sensible that without him he has not the sufficiency even to think a good thought. In short, he is dead to the world, to sin, to self; but alive to God and lively in his service. Prayer is his breath, the Word of God his food, and the ordinances more precious to him than the light of the sun. Such is a believer in his judgment and prevailing desires.

But were I to describe him from experience, especially at some times, how different would the picture be! Through he knows that communion with God is his highest privilege, he too seldom finds it so. On the contrary, if duty, conscience, and necessity did not compel, he would leave the throne of grace unvisited from day to day. He takes up the Bible, conscious that it is the fountain of life and true comfort. Yet, perhaps while he is making the selection, he feels a secret distaste, which prompts him to lay it down and give his preference to a newspaper. He needs not be told of the vanity and uncertainty of all beneath the sun, and yet is almost as much elated or cast down by a trifle as those who have their portion in this world. He believes that all things shall work together for his good, and that the most high God appoints, adjusts, and overrules all his concerns. Yet, he feels the risings of fear, anxiety, and displeasure, as though the contrary was true. He owns himself ignorant and liable to be deceived by a thousand fallacies, yet is easily betrayed into positiveness and self-conceit. He feels himself an unprofitable, unfaithful, unthankful servant, and therefore blushes to harbor a thought of desiring esteem and commendations of men. Yet, he cannot suppress it. Finally, on account of these and many inconsistencies, he is struck dumb before the Lord, stripped of every hope and plea, but what is provided in the free grace of God. And yet his heart is continually leaning and returning to a covenant of works.
