Let the gospel be preached in Òthe power of the Holy Ghost,Ó and you will see that it has power still, omnipotent power, to open the eyes of poor blind sinners, unstop deaf ears, cause the lame to leap, and raise the dead (Hebrews 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4-10).

ÒJesusÓ is ImmanuelÕs Name Don Fortner

(Tune: #93 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing — 77.77.77)

1.    Let our hearts and voices rise, join the triumph of the skies!

Earth and heaven now combine to extol the Christ divine!

In our flesh the Godhead see! — Christ, incarnate Deity!

God (O wondrous mystery!) took on our humanity!

2.    Passing fallen angels by, GodÕs own Son came here to die!

He took hold of AbramÕs seed as our mighty CovÕnant Head!

For His loved and chosen race, to bring mercy, peace and grace,

God a mortal man became! — Mortals, bow, and praise His name!

3.    ÒJESUSÓ is ImmanuelÕs name! Through a virginÕs womb He came,

Fully God and fully man, without sin, GodÕs holy Lamb!

Christ came here to save His own; and His work HeÕs fully done! —

See Him yonder, on the throne, Christ, Immanuel, God the Son!

ÒMy soul, hast thou sinned? God in Christ pardons thy sins. — Art thou diseased in body and soul, by reason of sin? God in Christ healeth all thy diseases. — Art thou ruined and undone in all the circumstances of nature, by reason of the fall? It is God, in Christ, that redeemeth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with all that is needful for thee in grace. — Art thou feeling decays, and is the event of mortality hastening upon thee? God in Christ will renew thee, as the eagle is renewed in old age. — Precious, precious salvation! And all eternally secured and made certain from a God in Christ.Ó

The Attesting Power of the Holy Ghost

Romans 15:13

ÒThe power of the Holy GhostÓ is to be seen in his attesting works, the works by which he attested that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ of God. Our Savior said, ÒThere is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is trueÓ (John 5:32).

Earthly Ministry

When he went into the river Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit descended upon him like a dove and proclaimed him GodÕs beloved Son. Later, when Christ Jesus raised the dead, healed the leper, healed diseases, caused the lame to walk, gave sight to the blind, ears to the deaf, and speech to the dumb, when he cast out demons by the word of his power, commanded the stormy seas to be calm, and multiplied the loaves and fishes, all was done by Òthe power of the Holy Ghost

The Holy Spirit dwelt in the man Christ Jesus without measure. And by Òthe power of the Holy GhostÓ all those miracles were accomplished. By those miracles he performed, the Holy Ghost said, over and over again, ÒThis man is the Christ of God!Ó — (See Matthew 11:3-6; Luke 7:19-23)

Pentecost

Then, after our RedeemerÕs ascension into Heaven, Òthe power of the Holy GhostÓ openly and manifestly attested that the man crucified at Jerusalem and raised up from the dead is Jesus the Christ, when he came on the Day of Pentecost like a rushing mighty wind upon the assembled apostles, and cloven tongues sat upon them. He attested the ministries of those holy apostles by giving them the ability to preach the gospel in languages they had never learned as he gave them utterance.

Apostolic Miracles

Also, miraculous deeds were wrought by them, verifying that they were indeed apostles of the Christ (Mark 16:20; Hebrews 2:4; Acts 5:12).

á      The Lame Man at the Temple (Acts 3:7-11)

á      Multitudes of Sick Folks (Acts 5:14-16)

á      StephenÕs Great Wonders and Miracles (Acts 6:8)

á      PeterÕs Healing Aeneas of Palsy (Acts 9:32-34)

á      PeterÕs Raising Dorcas from the Dead at Joppa (Acts 9:36-43)

á      PaulÕs Healing the Sick and Casting Out Devils at Ephesus (Acts 19:11-12), and in Troas (Acts 20:8-12), and Melita (Acts 28:3-9)

Great, miraculous deeds were wrought by the apostles as well as their Master, so that by Òthe power of the Holy GhostÓ many believed. God the Holy Spirit has omnipotent power, because he is himself God, the third person of the holy Trinity.       Obviously, apostolic gifts and miracles are not seen today. The apostles have all been in Glory for a long time. When the apostolic age ended, the apostolic gifts ceased, but not Òthe power of the Holy Ghost.Ó It is Òthe power of the Holy GhostÓ that we preach, and you believe.

ÒCall His Name JESUSÓ

Matthew 1:21

The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph, MaryÕs espoused husband, and said concerning her divine Son, ÒThou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.Ó Jesus means Deliverers or Savior. Joshua was the Old Testament name. As Joshua delivered Israel into the land of Canaan, so the Lord Jesus Christ shall deliver GodÕs elect into their heavenly rest. Three things are clearly revealed in the angelÕs message to Joseph.

Our SaviorÕs Eternal Godhead

The man Jesus is God the eternal Son. Joseph knew that the child was not his. And the angel assured him that the child had no earthly father. He was conceived in the womb of the virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. That is to say, God the Holy Spirit prepared a body for God the Son in MaryÕs womb, according to the decree of God the Father. And that child which Mary brought forth was and is God our Savior. He was not a god, or one like God, or even God in a diminished capacity. He was and is ÒGod over all, blessed forever

His People

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has a people in this world. They were already his people when he came into the world. His people are GodÕs elect, the people he came to save. Before the world was made, God gave Christ a people to save. The Father gave his sheep into the hands of his Son as the Good Shepherd. And the Son agreed to save all that the Father gave him. All men and women belong to Christ as their Creator. And he can do with his own as he will. But some out of AdamÕs fallen race are Òhis peopleÓ by election, by predestination, by covenant agreement, by redemption. And they shall be his people forever. Not one of them shall ever perish.

Salvation Certain

The salvation of his people is certain. The Lord Jesus Christ shall save his people from their sins. He has saved all his people from the penalty of their sins by his death upon the cross as our Substitute. He is saving his people from the reigning power and dominion of their sins by the power of his Spirit in regeneration, calling, and preservation. And he shall save his people from the presence of their sins by bringing them all home to glory, where there shall be one fold and one Shepherd.

ÒUnto you is born a Saviour which is Christ, the LordÓ

Luke 2:11

Pastor Henry Mahan

This is the good news, that the Saviour born is none other than Christ, the Lord. There is no good news if He is not the Lord God! It is not good news that a great prophet is born. Moses was a great prophet but he is dead. It is not good news that another priest is born. Aaron was a great high priest but others have taken his place by reason of death. It is not good news that a good king is born, David was a good king but he sleeps even as do the wicked kings. But if you tell me that the one born in Bethlehem is none other than the eternal God Who is Prophet, Priest and King — that is good news! He ever lives to make intercession. He eternally reigns with all authority. He will never leave not forsake me. If, the God-Man is my Saviour — that is good news!
