Living for God is living for the benefit of others, and serving God is serving others. — We can serve others without serving God; but we cannot serve God without serving others.

Nursery Duty Today: Amy Hutchins (AM) — Ruth Wall (PM)

ÒWho is on the LordÕs Side Don Fortner

(Tune: #118 — When I Survey —LM)

1.    When Aaron made a calf of gold,

And Israel worshipped it of old,

GodÕs faithful servant stood and cried,

ÒWho is there on JehovahÕs side?Ó

2.    Let us now fired with MosesÕ zeal,

To all who hear our voice appeal:

ÒWho will espouse our SaviorÕs cause,

ÒDespising all the worldÕs applause?Ó

3.    In pride, hypocrisy, and shame,

As traitors who despise ChristÕs name,

Their own free-will and works enshrine,

And call their golden calf divine.

4.    Let all who love JehovahÕs name,

Washed in the blood of CalvÕryÕs Lamb,

Though all the world our names deride,

Say, ÒWe are on JehovahÕs side!Ó

Brazen Hypocrisy

John 13:2

Nothing in all the world is more corrupt or more callous than the heart of a hypocrite. There sat Judas at the table with the Son of God and his disciples. But he had already struck his deal with the JewsÕ priests to betray the Savior. — What brazen hypocrisy! Judas stands as a beacon to warn us of what deep corruption may be found in the hearts of very religious people. Still, we must not be overly disturbed when we find such hypocrites among GodÕs saints. Not all who are washed in the waters of baptism have been washed in the blood of Christ (John 13:10). — ÒThey are not all Israel which are of IsraelÓ (Romans 9:6).

ÒIf I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.Ó

John 13:8

The only way sinners can be saved is by being washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. The only saved sinner is the blood washed sinner (1 Corinthians 6:11; 1 Peter 1:18-21; 1 John 1:7-9). We must be washed in the blood judicially. That took place for all GodÕs elect when the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption and obtained eternal redemption for us at Calvary (Hebrews 1:3).

And we must be washed in the SaviorÕs blood experimentally. That takes place in regeneration and effectual calling, when God the Holy Ghost applies the cleansing blood to our hearts, giving us faith in Christ, purging our consciences of guilt before God, bringing life and immortality to light by the gospel (Zechariah 13:1; Titus 3:5; Hebrews 9:14).

Even those who are cleansed and forgiven need a daily application to the blood of Christ for daily pardon. — ÒThe blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sinÓ (1 John 1:7, 9). Thank God for the blood, the precious, perpetually sin-cleansing blood of Christ!

Christ Our Example

John 13:5-17

Christ is our example in all things. In his earthly life of consecration, righteous obedience to and faith in God, and in his suffering and death our blessed Savior showed us how to live for God in this world (1 Peter 2:21). May God the Holy Spirit give us grace, day by day, to follow his steps! In this passage of Scripture, the Lord Jesus gives us a blessed example of genuine humility and love. True humility and love willingly condescends to do whatever is needed to meet the needs of those who are the objects of our love.

I find it highly instructive to see our Savor washing JudasÕ feet and then breaking bread with the betrayer at the first communion table of the New Testament church. He knew the betrayerÕs heart and his wicked deeds. Yet, he washed his feet and broke bread with him. Shall we do otherwise? It is ours to do good even to our enemies. And it is never our business to police the LordÕs Table or in anyway try to separate goats from sheep in his kingdom.

Though it is apparent that our Savior washed JudasÕ feet, too, the message is in what he did for his disciples. The Son of God stooped to wash his disciplesÕ feet, and he still does! When may it be said that Christ stoops to wash his disciplesÕ feet in a spiritual sense? When he shows us our sin, the foulness of our feet, and graciously makes us dip our feet in the fountain of his blood, he washes them. (Zechariah 13:1; 1 John 1:9; 2:1-2). When he enables us, with tears of repentance, to wash and kiss his feet, he is washing our feet (Luke 7:38; Ezekiel 16:63). This same, self-denying, loving service is our responsibility to one another in this world (vv. 14-15). His example is our rule of life (1 John 3:16-17). And all who follow our LordÕs example find happiness and satisfaction in doing so. — ÒIf ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do themÓ (John 13:17). Nothing brings greater joy to devoted saints than the privilege and grace of obedience to Christ and usefulness to his people!

A Lamb for an Ass

Exodus 34:19-20

Throughout the Mosaic dispensation, every day in the Jewish nation opened and closed with the sacrifice of a lamb. A lamb was offered upon GodÕs altar at the door of the tabernacle every morning to begin the day; and another lamb was sacrificed every evening to conclude it.

The Meeting Place

The Lord God said, ÒI will meet you to speak there unto theeÓ (Exodus 29:42). The lamb sacrificed was the place of meeting. God came to his people and his people came to him by a sacrificed lamb. There was no other way for the two to come together. If God came to man, it was by a lamb sacrificed. If man came to God, it was by a lamb sacrificed. That lamb sacrificed was given to the children of Israel for a token, a sign upon the hand that made the sacrifice and in the eyes that beheld it. And this is what the token promised, this is what the Lord God said by the sign: This is how I will dwell among you and be your God, this is how you Òshall be sanctified by my gloryÓ (Exodus 29:38-46).

GodÕs Glory in the Lamb

According to the typical revelation of the law given in Exodus 29, sanctification was by the sacrifice of a lamb. In verse 43 we are told that it is by GodÕs glory. Does the Lord God mean for us to understand that all our salvation and all his glory is in that Lamb to whom these typical lambs pointed, the Lamb of God, Christ our Passover, the Lamb of God sacrificed for us? Indeed, he does! All our salvation and all GodÕs glory is in the Lamb of God slain for sinners.

GodÕs Law

In Exodus 13:2 the Lord God commands, ÒSanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.Ó But what about the unclean animals? The Lord God gave very specific command, forbidding that any unclean beast be offered to him (Leviticus 27:11). He gave two commandments that seem to contradict one another. If one is fulfilled, it would appear that the other cannot be. He demands that all the firstborn of man and beast be sanctified unto him. Yet, he also forbids offering anything that is unclean to him.

Super-abounding Grace

How can such a law (the law is one) be fulfilled? How can all the firstborn be sanctified to the Lord, and no unclean thing be offered to him? The Lord God himself answers that question in Exodus 34. — The ass must either be redeemed by a lamb or slain. The ass was redeemed, made clean, and accepted by God by the sacrifice of a lamb. Like the ass, fallen man is unclean and cannot be accepted by God. But the Lord God sacrificed a Lamb, his own dear Son, the Lamb of God for chosen sinners, and made the unclean altogether clean before him! This is the great wonder of grace. — Being redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, we are the sheep of God, the lambs of ChristÕs flock, made fit to sit far above principalities and powers in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus! Lost by sin through the fall, and utterly unclean, GodÕs super-abounding grace has made us utterly clean, without spot and without blame, through the sin-atoning blood of his dear Son, the Lamb of God! We, like the unclean ass, are redeemed and sanctified by his glory!
