Conviction is the Work of God the Holy Ghost Don Fortner

(Tune: #164 — Breathe on Me, Breath of God —SM)

1.    Conviction is the work

Of God the Holy Ghost

In chosen sinners taught of God

In His dear Son to trust.

2.    Convinced of sin I bow

To Christ revealed in me,

Confess my sin (Vile unbelief!),

And now in Him believe.

3.    Convinced of righteousness

(My own by JesusÕ blood!),

By His obedience IÕm made

The righteousness of God!

4.    Convinced of judgment, too

(The serpentÕs head is crushed!),

Because Christ bore judgment for me

GodÕs saving grace is just!

5.    Now taught of God I trust

His sin-atoning Lamb.

O Holy Spirit, give me grace

To magnify His name!

Dark Providences Cleared in Due Time

John 13:7

How many times have you seen or known some terribly painful, traumatic, almost devastating thing, and thought to yourself, ÒWhat good can come of this? How is this going to work for good? How will this benefit anyone? Can this be honoring to God?Ó

We know that our heavenly Father is too wise to err, too strong to fail, and too good to do wrong. Yet, when tragedies come close to home, we cannot help asking, ÒWhy did this thing happen?Ó We may not openly say it, but we ask in frustration, perhaps in anger or resentment, — ÒGod, what are you doing?Ó

Here in John 13 God the Holy Spirit has preserved by divine inspiration a word from our dear Savior that should help to prepare us for such times. As the Lord Jesus began to wash his disciplesÕ feet, Peter was confused by the MasterÕs conduct, and said to him in verse 6, — ÒLord, Dost thou wash my feet?Ó Then, in verse 7, ÒJesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.Ó

When Jacob awoke from his dream, he said, ÒSurely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it notÓ (Genesis 28:16). When SamsonÕs strength was gone, we are told, ÒHe wist not that the Lord was departed from himÓ (Judges 16:20). What is said of our SaviorÕs presence and absence, his goings and comings, may also be said of his doings. — ÒWhat I do,Ó he says, Òthou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.Ó

Specifically, this word from our Savior in John 13:7, ÒWhat I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter,Ó refers to our LordÕs act of washing his disciplesÕ feet. But it is a statement that is clearly applicable to GodÕs providence. The design or intention of GodÕs works of providence are often, if not usually, hidden from his people; but they shall be revealed in due time.

ÒGod moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform.

He plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines of never failing skill,

He treasures up His bright designs, and works His sovereign will.

His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour.

The bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take, the clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy and shall break, in blessing on your head.

Blind unbelief is sure to err and scan His work in vain.

God is His own Interpreter; and He will make it plain.Ó

— William Cowper

All the dark mysteries and painful experiences of GodÕs providence will be cleared up for GodÕs saints in GodÕs time. — ÒJesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafterÓ

The Lesson Learned at the PotterÕs House

Pastor Frank Tate

ÒArise, and go down to the potterÕs house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.Ó (Jeremiah 18:2)

When Jeremiah went to the potterÕs house the Lord taught him that all men are in the hand of God to do with as he pleases. If any of us will be saved, we must learn that same lesson. God is not in our hands to decide if we will let him save us or not. We are in GodÕs hands. He decides what he will do with us. God does not have to have mercy on you or me. If God saves me he will be just in doing it. If God damns me he will be equally just in doing it. God is sovereign. He does as he pleases. Thank God he has been pleased to have mercy on sinners and save them by his grace through the glorious person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Hope of the Resurrection

1 Peter 1:3

Pastor Darvin Pruitt

Regeneration can only be known by faith. To be born again is an inward work of the Spirit enabling the sinner to repent, submit, receive instruction, understanding, and to believe the testimony of God concerning his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. ÒOf his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrathÓ (James 1:18-19) To be born again is for the hope of Christ to be established in you. Contrary to all other kinds of faith, the faith of GodÕs elect rests in Christ alone. When Paul talked about his calling of God, he described it this way: ÒHe called me by his grace to reveal his Son in meÓ (Galatians 1:15-16) This is what Peter calls Òa lively hope,Ó One alive from the dead and reserved in heaven for all who believe. He is alive from the dead in two respects.

First, he is called the firstborn from the dead (Colossians 1: 18). He is the first man born of woman since the fall of Adam to have a being and nature without sin. Being the seed of the Holy Spirit, he is God and man in one glorious person. This act Paul says is the result of his being the head of the body, the church. That is, he is the federal head and representative of all those given to him by the Father. As all AdamÕs race came under the judgment of his disobedience, so by the righteousness of Christ the free gift came upon all those represented in him unto justification of life (Romans 5: 17-19).

Second, he is alive from the dead by his resurrection. The Scripture says, ÒHe was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justificationÓ (Romans 4: 25).

The assurance of our salvation is not based on our faith; but on our living hope who is seated in glory and by whom our faith is given and through which we are kept. God Òhath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boastÓ (Ephesians 2: 6-9).
