When Paul said, ÒGod forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,Ó he used words to express the strongest possible prohibition against glorying in, trusting in, rejoicing in, promoting, or preaching anything except the glorious gospel doctrine of ÒJesus Christ and him crucified.Ó

Faith the Gift of God Don Fortner

(Tune: #77 — Sun of My Soul —LM)

1.    Amazing love, beyond degree,

Eternal, sovÕreign, rich, and free!

Jehovah gave His only Son,

For rebel sinners, lost, undone!

2.    Have I the gift of faith received?

Do I in Jesus Christ believe?

I do believe, by grace divine,

And claim eternal life as mine.

3.    GodÕs gift of faith, this precious gift,

With hope assured our spirits lift. —

All who believe on Christ shall prove,

The joys of everlasting love.

Faith Glories in the Cross

Galatians 6:14

Faith brings needy sinners to Christ, puts on Christ, and walks in Christ. Faith brings sinners to the cross and glories only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto us, and we unto the world. Though faith is not righteousness, it is the believerÕs connection to righteousness. Faith finds in Christ and enjoys in Christ the assurance of perfect, indestructible righteousness before God through the merits of GodÕs own Son. Faith in Christ assures the believing sinner of eternal life and everlasting righteousness, depending upon the perpetuity of that righteousness which can never change. Blessed be God, we shall never put off that Christ whom we put on when we believed (Romans 13:14; Galatians 3:27). The garments of salvation shall never wear thin! The robe of righteousness in which the Lord God has clothed us shall never wax old! The beauty our Savior has put upon us (his own beauty) is a beauty that fadeth not away!

The Glory of the Cross

ÒGod forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.Ó          (Galatians 6:14)

Everything about the doctrine of the cross is glorious. It was a glorious Savior who died. He died for a glorious purpose, to redeem GodÕs elect from the fall. His death reveals the glory of God. And by his death the Lord Jesus Christ raises ruined sinners up to a glorious inheritance. No wonder Paul exclaimed, ÒGod forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!Ó Why did Paul glory in the cross? Here are five answers to that question.

1.    It is a compassion revealed. Would you know the love of God? Then look into the death of Christ upon the cursed tree. Only there can it be truly realized that ÒGod is loveÓ (Romans 5:8; John 3:16; 1 John 3:16; 4:9-10).

2.    It is a covenant respected. Long before the world began God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost entered into a covenant of grace by which the salvation of GodÕs elect was infallibly secured (2 Samuel 23:5; Jeremiah 31:31-34; 32:37-40). Our Lord Jesus, by his obedience unto death, even the death of the cross, as our Substitute, fulfilled and ratified that everlasting covenant (John 10:16-18; Hebrews 9:16-22; 13:20).

3.    It is a conquest realized (John 12:31-33; Revelation 20:1-3). Upon the cross Christ justified his elect, conquered Satan, and procured the SpiritÕs effectual call of his elect, guaranteeing the salvation of every sinner for whom he died.

4.    It is a curse removed. The blood of Christ cannot fail to save every soul for whom that blood was shed, because the blood of Christ poured out unto death upon the cross has fully removed the curse of the law from GodÕs elect (Romans 8:1; Galatians 3:13). The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ shall never be discovered a miscarriage! — ÒHe shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied

5.    It is a comfortable rule. In Galatians 6:16 Paul is still talking about the glory of the cross. He says, ÒAs many as walk according to this ruleÓ (What rule? The rule of the cross.), Òpeace (shall) be on them!Ó All who live under the rule and dominion of the cross find peace (Matthew 11:28-30). Believers are not under the rule of the Mosaic law (Romans 6:14; 7:4; 10:4). And we are not under the rule of religious traditions (Colossians 2:16-22). But we do gladly live under the blessed, comfortable rule of the cross. We are motivated by ChristÕs death upon the cross (1 Corinthians 6:20; 2 Corinthians 5:14) and seek in all things to be conformed to the example of our crucified Savior (Philippians 3:10).

ÒI am DeterminedÓ

1 Corinthians 2:2

Gospel preaching is not defending points of doctrine but declaring the boundless mercy and grace of God to poor, needy sinners in Christ. I think hell must roar with laughter when preachers stand in the pulpit and try to untie theological knots no one is aware of and argue debates about which no one cares. Until I find a message more glorious than Christ crucified, more needful than free grace, more delightful than infinite mercy, more comforting than absolute forgiveness, more assuring than perfect righteousness, more compelling than redeeming blood, more hopeful than heavenly glory, and more joyful than the infinite, immutable love of God in Christ, I am determined to preach nothing else, but Jesus Christ and him crucified. — ÒGod forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world

The Bottom Line

Pastor Larry Criss

ÒAnd they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.Ó (Acts 16:31)

This was the answer of Paul to the poor terrified jailorÕs question, ÒSirs, what must I do to be saved?Ó In our day, when the insanity of political correctness is everywhere and has even spread its outrageous influence into the life of the church, how refreshing to hear Paul answer this all important question in words impossible to be misunderstood.

The Only Answer – The jailor was, just moments before Paul spoke these words to him, about to kill himself. If he had asked his question of some self-professing theologians today, he may have gone ahead and done it. Some would feel that this man had to be examined as to whether he was truly sincere. Others would tell him he had to understand the great doctrines of the Bible. And some would tell him he must feel a certain degree of emotion or he couldnÕt be a candidate for grace. But Paul did none of that. And neither should we.

The Right Answer – The jailor asked a straightforward question and Paul gave him a straightforward answer. And the answer Paul gave is the answer of Scripture. I once heard a man preach from this passage and say the jailor was a Òrank ArminianÓ because he asked this question. His reason for saying so was that the jailor wasnÕt able to save himself and his question proved that he thought he could! But the jailor didnÕt ask ÒWhat can I do to be saved,Ó but ÒWhat must I do to be saved?Ó And every sinner thatÕs ever saved must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

GodÕs Answer – Paul answered, not according to Òpolitical religious correctness,Ó or tradition, or what was the current opinion of theologians, but what the Lord himself told him to answer. The Captain of our salvation commanded that while weÕre going through the world weÕre to preach the gospel to every creature. And included in that glorious gospel is the promise that he that believes shall be saved. May God give me grace to do the same. And I pray that if some poor trembling sinner should ask me this same question that my answer would be exactly and only this: ÒBelieve on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.Ó

Shout salvation full and free – Highest hills and deepest caves;

This our song of victory – Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
