Believer, See Your Conquering Lord Don Fortner

(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear —CM)

1.    Believer, see your conquÕring Lord,

With His triumphant train,

Clothed with a vesture, dipped in blood,

Outpoured when He was slain!

2.    Exalted on His Great White Throne,

His blood-stained garment shows —

He gave His life, for you atoned,

And conquered all your foes!

3.    His royal robe of crimson hue,

His head adorned with crowns,

He rules the universe for you,

And God no longer frowns!

4.    The blood that stained His garments thus,

And washed our sins away,

Obtained eternal life for us,

And heavenÕs endless day!

5.    His vesture marks the conquest won,

And victÕry yet to come.

The Christ of God, our King, we own,

And bow before His throne.

The Sun and the Moon

ÒAnd the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.Ó (Joshua 10:13)

We read in Joshua 10:13 that Òthe sun stood still and the moon stayed.Ó That is not intended to teach, as some foolishly imagine, that the sun is not stationary. It obviously is, just as Christ the Sun of Righteousness is stationary upon his throne. Rather, God the Holy Ghost tells us that the light of the sun and the reflected light of the moon were miraculously stopped in their course until JoshuaÕs victory was accomplished.

Calvary

When our sin-atoning Joshua, the Lord Jesus Christ, died in our stead at Calvary, which was the hour of his victory over death, hell, and the grave, a reverse miracle was accomplished. When the Christ of God was made sin for us and accomplished redemption as our sin-atoning Substitute, God forsook his own dear Son in unspeakable wrath and the light of the sun was turned into darkness for three hours (Luke 23:44-45).

Reprobation

And there is an appointed day coming when all the victories of our all-glorious Joshua shall be finished. Before that day, the sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood (Acts 2:20). There will be a total eclipse of the sun. That is to say, with the opening of the sixth seal (Revelation 6:12), the spiritual light men possess will be utter darkness; and the judgment of God will be obvious to all who have eyes to see.

Has this day come upon us? It certainly appears to be so. Because men and women refuse to receive the love of the truth, God has sent them the strong delusion of Arminian, freewill, works religion, that they might receive SatanÕs lie and be damned by it, men worshipping man as though he were God, attributing to man power over God (2 Thessalonians 2:11-12). This day of antichrist will-worship is a day of divine judgment. In the Book of God it is described as reprobation, God giving men over to their own will.

Judgment

In the great and terrible Day of Judgment, there will be a total dissolution of the physical universe (Revelation 6:12-15). It will be a climatic, not a gradual thing (2 Peter 3:10-12). The entire world of reprobate rebels will be seized with sudden terror (Revelation 6:15-17). ÒIn that great and terrible day, there will be a strange prayer meeting. Men will pray, but the men praying will not be saved men, but unsaved men. They will pray not to God, but to the mountains and rocks. They will pray not for life, but for death. And they will pray not that they may see Christ, but that they may be hidden from him!Ó (Ronnie Lewis). When that day comes, the door of grace will be shut forever! Christ will conquer all his enemies, either by the power of his grace or by the power of his wrath; but conquer, he surely will (Isaiah 45:20-25).

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1-26

When we read the 20th chapter of Exodus, we are standing at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Moses declares, ÒThe LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for themÓ (Deuteronomy 33:2). But Sinai is all darkness, until ZionÕs Sun of Righteousness rises upon it. Then, the darkness melts before the rising Sun. The angry roars are hushed by the sound of grace. The terrors of darkness are dispersed by the Light of Life. And the quaking is settled by the Prince of Peace as we are made to see that Sinai opens the way to Zion and its blissful slopes of mercy, love, and grace.

LawÕs End

How vast and infinitely important GodÕs righteous law is! It was delivered with such awful solemnity on Mt. Sinai that all the children of Israel were filled with fear as they stood before the quaking mountain. That fact alone should fill our hearts with constantly increasing joy, praise, and thanks-giving for the unspeakable gift of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, our precious, blessed, holy, law-fulfilling, law-satisfying Surety! He answered all the demands of SinaiÕs law for us; and, answering those demands, he is declared to be Òthe end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believethÓ (Romans 10:4).

With every renewed view of our blessed Savior, who has, with his own blood, redeemed us from the curse of the law, let us renew our praises to the God of all grace. With every renewed conviction of sin, as we remember our iniquities, transgressions, and sins, let us lift our hearts with renewed gratitude and adoration to our ever gracious Triune Jehovah.

Blessed Surety

Blessed Spirit of God, by the sweet influences of your grace in our hearts, teach us to cherish the redemption that is ours in Christ Jesus, and to cherish our Redeemer. In great love for our souls, he stood forth as our Surety in old eternity. He undertook our cause. By his doing and dying as our Substitute, the Son of God obtained eternal redemption for us. By his blood and righteousness, we now draw nigh to God and are Òaccepted in the Beloved.Ó Blessed be God, the boundary, which kept Israel from approaching God and kept God from approaching Israel, is now removed. And we are come to Jesus, the Mediator of the new covenant, and to his precious blood of sprinkling. Drawing nigh to God, in this new and living way, we arrive at the fountain head of mercies, the throne of God and the Lamb, the throne of grace, and obtain the mercy and grace we need.

Grace Anticipated

It is the God of everlasting grace who speaks from Sinai. His mercy looked upon IsraelÕs enslavement in Egypt, and protected them. He burst their bonds and crushed their cruel foes. He fed them morning after morning with bread from heaven. He sent streams gushing from the smitten rock to quench their thirst. And now he brings them to Sinai, and makes Sinai a platform upon which to show his Christ to chosen sinners.
