Grace Baptist Church of Danville

The most important aspect of a believerÕs life is public worship —  the worship of God in the assembly of his saints, collectively singing his praise, calling upon him in prayer, and hearing the exposition of his Word by the preaching of the gospel.

All Glory to the Great I AM Don Fortner

(Tune: The Doxology — LM)

1.    All glory to the great I AM

Who chose me in the blessed Lamb!

Eternal love and sovereign grace

Secured my everlasting peace.

2.    Praise Christ by whose atoning blood

I have been reconciled to God;

By His imputed righteousness

I am as holy as He is!

3.    Praise to the Spirit I will give

`Tis by His power that I live;

And to the end I shall endure,

For by His grace I'm kept secure!

ÒMembers of His Body, of His Flesh, and of His BonesÓ

Ephesians 5:30

The apostle Paul seems to stretch language almost to the breaking point describing the union of Christ and his people. Paul tells us that Christ dwells in us and we in him. We died to sin in him. We were crucified with him. We live in him. We are baptized into him and into his death. Christ is the Head and we are the body, bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. He is the Foundation and we are the building. He is the Husband and we are his wife. For Christ to live is for us to live. For us to live is for him to live. Indeed, we are Òthe fulness of him that filleth all in all!Ó

      We are one with Christ in all things. — Representatively one with him as our Surety from eternity. — Vitally one with him by grace and faith, as the vine and the branches, as the head and the body are one. — And assuming our nature, living, and dying, and rising again, our Lord Jesus Christ is one with us. He became all that we are, and makes us all that he is. And, now, Òas he is, so are we in this worldÓ (1 John 4:17).

ÒI bare you on eaglesÕ wings.Ó

Exodus 19:4

When a soldier is severely wounded in battle, it is of little benefit to him to be told that there are doctors at the hospital who can bind up his wounds, and give him medicine that will ease him of all the pains that rack his body. What that wounded warrior needs is someone to carry him to the hospital, and a doctor to administer the care he needs and give him the medicine that will help.

      So it is with us. — All the promises of God and all doctrine of the gospel are of no benefit to our souls, until the Lord God, by his own gracious hand, applies them to us. We are thirsty, but too faint to crawl to the waterhole. We must be carried to the water. We are too weak even to drink. Someone must put the water to our lips and tenderly pour it into our mouths.

      That is what the Lord our God does for us by his Spirit. God the Holy Ghost, the blessed Spirit of Truth, takes the things of Christ and applies them to us. Do not imagine that our blessed Savior has placed his promises, his blessings, and his mercies on heavenly shelves that we may climb up to heaven and get them for ourselves. That is not the case at all. — He comes to us and sheds his mercy, love, and grace abroad in our hearts by his Spirit. Yes, he bids us come boldly to the Throne of Grace, that we might obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. But, blessed be his name, he does much more than that!

      He who is our God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, comes to our poor souls and pours in the oil and wine of grace, by which he renews us day by day, and sweetly, effectually causes us to come to him for grace. O bless his name forever!

      Child of God, if you are laboring under deep distresses, your God does not give you promises and then leave you to yourself to draw them up from the Word like buckets of water from a well. Oh, no! The promises he has written in the Word, he will write anew on your heart. He will manifest his love to you, and by his blessed Spirit, dispel your cares and troubles.

      It is GodÕs prerogative and GodÕs work to wipe every tear from the eyes of his chosen. The Good Samaritan not only gives you the sweet wine of the promise, but he holds the golden chalice to your lips and pours the life-blood into your soul. The poor, sick, way-worn pilgrim is not merely strengthened to walk, but he is borne Òon eaglesÕ wingsÓ until he has reached the Mount of God above! — Glorious gospel!

God our Savior provides everything for the helpless, and brings grace to us before we seek it. So, he gets as much glory in the giving as in the gift.

ÒTake heed what you hear.Ó

Mark 4:24

If you care for your soul, the Lord Jesus warns you to Òtake heed what ye hearÓ (Mark 4:24). — ÒTake heed what you hear.Ó I hear people and hear from people all over the country and around the world who willfully put themselves and their families under the influence of pagan, Arminian, free will, will-worship, works religion. They try to justify themselves, sayingÉ ÒWe have to go to church somewhere. We must not forsake the assembly of the saints.Ó É ÒThe preacher says some good things.Ó É ÒI donÕt pay any attention to what they teach.Ó É ÒOur children like to go there.Ó É ÒThey have good programs.Ó É ÒMy family goes there.Ó É ÒIÕve always gone to church there.Ó É ÒWe have a lot of friends there.Ó

We will be wise to hear the Son of God. — ÒTake heed what ye hear!Ó Our Lord was not just beating the air when he said that. Mark was not just filling up space when he wrote it. — ÒBeloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the worldÓ (1 John 4:1). God the Holy Ghost forbids us to entertain, support, or even pray for GodÕs blessings upon preachers who deny the gospel. To pray for GodÕs blessings upon them is to pray for GodÕs blessings upon antichrist.

ÒFor many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed.Ó (2 John 1:7-10)

If you care for your soul and care for the souls of those under your influence (Wife — Children — Neighbors, etc.), do not subject yourself or them to the influence of Arminian, free will, works, antichrist religion to any degree, for any reason.

Antichrist is not difficult to identify. The Spirit of God tells us plainly that Òevery spirit (preacher) that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is that spirit of antichristÓ (1 John 4:3). Every preacher who denies that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, who denies that the man Christ Jesus actually brought in everlasting righteousness, and made an end of iniquity for his elect by his obedience unto death is antichrist.

If you care for your soul, and care for those under your influence, if you care for the worship and glory of God, addict yourself to the ministry of the gospel of God. — Addict yourself to the preaching of GodÕs free, sovereign, saving grace in Christ.
