Grace Baptist Church of Danville

July 16, 2017

Men everywhere hate the gospel of God because it abases man and exalts the Triune God, makes man nothing and Christ everything, exposes manŐs sin and magnifies ChristŐs righteousness, declares manŐs guilt and displays the glorious efficacy of ChristŐs blood atonement, binds manŐs will to his nature and asserts that salvation is by the will of God alone, shows manŐs works of righteousness to be sin and proclaims salvationŐs accomplishment by the work of God alone.

GodŐs Elect, Predestinated Don Fortner

(Tune: #294 — Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us —87.87.87)

  1. GodŐs elect, predestinated, by His purposes of grace,

Which can never be frustrated, shall be saved by sovŐreign grace!

In His kingdom, all the chosen shall see Jesus face to face!

  1. GodŐs elect, predestinated to a kingdom and a crown,

Shall by grace be new-created. God will send his Spirit down,

To regenerate and form them in the image of His Son!

  1. GodŐs elect, predestinated, bought by JesusŐ precious blood,

Justly have their sins remitted, and made righteous by their God,

Never can be separated from the love of Christ their God!

  1. GodŐs elect, predestinated, chosen in eternal love,

Shall by God Himself be fitted for their mansions built above!

From the PotterŐs hand who made them they shall never be removed!

  1. Yes, we are predestinated, as asserted by our King!

With this precious truth elated, we will sovŐreign mercy sing!

Home to Glory, home to Glory, Christ will all His ransomed bring!

ŇWhosoever shall Call Upon the Name of the LordÓ

Romans 10:13

Paul here shows us the way of salvation. — ŇWhosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.Ó I like that word Ňwhosoever.Ó Anybody, any sinner in all the wide world, who does but call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is the promise of our God in Holy Scripture. If I call upon the name of the Lord, I am saved. If you call upon the name of the Lord, you are saved.

Salvation comes by calling upon the name of the Lord. Salvation does not come by walking a church aisle, talking to a priest, or a preacher, or saying a certain prayer. Salvation comes by calling upon the name of the Lord. Salvation does not come by calling on the name of the Lord and sincerely trying to live for God. Salvation comes by calling on the name of the Lord. Salvation does not come by dreams and visions. Salvation comes by calling upon the name of the Lord. Salvation does not come by feelings and experiences. Salvation comes by calling upon the name of the Lord.

Knowledge

If I am to call upon the name of the Lord, I must know who he is (Romans 10:14-17). I cannot call upon an unknown God. I cannot trust an unrevealed Savior. I cannot believe an unspoken promise. Who is the Lord Jesus Christ? What has he done? Why did he do it? Where is he now? What is he doing there? These things must be known before a person can call upon the name of the Lord. Christ must be made known to you before you can call upon him.

Worship

What does it mean to call upon the name of the Lord? Look into the Book of God to see. To call upon the name of the Lord is to worship God (Genesis 4:26). Whosoever worships God, in GodŐs appointed way, by GodŐs ordained Mediator, shall be saved.

Pray

To call upon the name of the Lord is to pray (1 Kings 18:24). Whosoever shall pray unto the living God from his heart shall be saved. Prayer is the sure sign of life in the heart.

Trust

To call upon the name of the Lord is to trust the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 8:2). The leper came to Christ knowing his need, knowing ChristŐs power, submitting to ChristŐs rule, and trusting ChristŐs mercy.

Confess

To call upon the name of the Lord is to publicly profess his name before men, confessing him in believerŐs baptism, being immersed, buried with him in baptism (Acts 22:16; Galatians 3:27). Baptism has no saving efficacy whatsoever. It has no merit with God. But baptism is an act of obedience to Christ. It is the KingŐs command. It is therefore something we are obliged to require of men (Mark 16:16).

Calling upon the Name of the Lord

Romans 10:13-14

In order to call upon the name of the Lord you must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, you must trust Christ. — ŇHow then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?Ó The mere fact that we call upon anyone for help demonstrates some measure of faith in that person, and some measure of confidence that he can and will help.

Without question, we must call upon the name of the Lord. We must seek him by prayer and supplication. But before we call, we must believe. In order to pray, we must believe. Faith comes first (Hebrews 11:6).

As I write these lines, I do so as a sinner calling upon God for mercy and grace in Christ. The very fact that I call upon the Lord God for mercy demonstrates that I do, at least in some measure, have faith in him. The fact that I am calling upon the Lord for salvation implies four things.

1.    I am calling upon God for mercy, because I know that I need his saving mercy. I believe what God reveals about himself and about me, about his justice and my transgressions, about his holiness and my sinfulness, about his purity and my iniquity. I take sides with God against myself and acknowledge my need of salvation. This is the result of Holy Spirit conviction (John 16:8-11; Psalm 51:1-5). No sinner will ever seek Christ and the grace of God in Christ until he is brought to realize his need of Christ (Luke 15:14-17).

2.    I am calling upon God to save me, because I believe God has provided a way of salvation for sinners. — Substitution (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13; Romans 3:24-26). Propitiation has been made. Justice has been satisfied. Righteousness has been brought in.

3.    I am calling upon the name of the Lord, because I believe there is a Savior who delights in mercy (Micah 7:18-20; Matthew 1:21). The Lord Jesus Christ is able to save (Hebrews 7:25). He is willing to save (Isaiah 1:18; 55:6-7). And he is anxious to save. — ŇToday, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart.Ó

4.    The fact that I am calling upon Christ, seeking mercy, grace, and salvation by him, implies that I do, in measure, trust him. I am not trusting anyone else. I look for hope to no one else. I am looking to Christ and Christ alone. I have let go of all other confidence; and falling into his mighty arms, I am saved.

How about you? Will you let go of all other hope and fall into the arms of Christ? In order to be saved, you must call upon God for mercy. But in order to call upon the name of the Lord in repentance and faith, you must believe. To call upon the name of the Lord is to look to the Lord Jesus Christ alone for salvation, believing that he is able to save because of who he is and what he has accomplished.
