Our Sovereign God Maintains His Universal ThroneDon Fortner

(Tune: #39 — This is My FatherÕs World — SMD)

1.     Our sovÕreign God maintains His universal throne;

In heavÕn, and earth, and hell He reigns, and makes His wonders known!

His counsels and decrees, firmer than mountains stand;

He will perform whateÕer He please; and none can stay his hand!

2.     All things His will controls; and His all-wise decree

Has fixed the destinies of all in matchless sovÕreignty. —

Jacob by grace He saved, and gives no reason why;

But EsauÕs heart He left depraved. — And who shall dare reply?

3.     What if the Potter takes part of a lump of clay,

And for Himself a vessel makes and casts the rest away?

Who shall resist His will, or say, ÒWhat doest Thou?Ó

Jehovah is the SovÕreign still; and all to Him must bow!

4.     My soul, bow and adore the Lord in all His ways;

His sovÕreignty none can explore; but I will trust His grace!

ÒFor of Him and through Him and to Him are all things:

To Whom be glory evermore! Amen! Amen! Amen!Ó

If we truly believe God, we will serve him with confidence and peace, simply trusting his total sovereignty, power, wisdom, and grace. The fear of man shall not be a threat to us. The favor of man shall not be a motive to us. The circumstances of the hour shall not pressure us, and the desire for results shall not alter our message nor cause us to employ the popular methods of others. If we believe God, we will simply perform our responsibilities faithfully and wait upon the Lord to work his purpose according to his will.

The Preeminent One

Colossians 1:15-18

Pastor Eric Richards — San Diego Grace Fellowship, San Diego, CA

The singular cause, unique design and distinctive purpose of ALL things is Christ! Christ is the cause – All things were created by Him. Christ is the design – He is before all things and by Him all things consist. Christ is the purpose – All things were created for Him; for His own pleasure and glory! God has placed all things into the hands of the God-man, Mediator King for the absolute security of His church and the glory of His name. In all things, Christ has the preeminence (or superiority, supremacy, greatness, excellence, distinction, prominence, predominance, eminence, importance, prestige, stature, renown) by divine appointment. If God Almighty has approved and exalted Christ alone in all of His purpose and works in both time and eternity, how ought Christ (His person and work) be the conspicuously preeminent theme of all that we preach and believe? Of necessity, He must be our only aim in every message preached, and the one object of faith clearly set forth to poor sinners. God has preeminently blessed Christ alone in the preaching of the gospel.

The Lord Jesus said, ÒAnd I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto meÓ (Jn. 12:32).

Faith is not the Savior. It was not faith that was born at Bethlehem and died on Golgotha for us. It was not faith that loved us and gave itself for us, that bore our sin in its own body on the tree, that died and rose again for our sins. Faith is one thing, the Saviour is another. Faith is one thing, and the cross is another. Let us not confound them nor ascribe to a poor, imperfect act of man that which belongs exclusively to the Son of the living God.                                                                  — Horatius Bonar

ÒI Am the DoorÓ

John 10:9

Pastor Marvin Stalnaker — Katy Baptist Church, Fairmont, WV

Here the Lord Jesus declares himself to be the only Door into the presence of God. By him if any man enters, by God given faith, believing GodÕs testimony to the truth of salvation by Christ alone, that man shall be saved. He shall Ògo in,Ó that is into an actual experience of salvation in regenerating grace and true life. He shall be given, by GodÕs Spirit, an understanding of GodÕs mercy to him in Christ and shall know that salvation is all of grace. At the same time, he shall Ògo outÓ of the darkness of unbelief and false hope and self-righteous works religion. Having been given the glorious light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, a regenerated sinner finds the pasture of rest in his Lord. He hears the voice of the great Shepherd of the sheep as he leads his people through this world. They eat of the richest pastures of his providing as he brings them to feast upon himself through the preaching of the gospel and truly they shall want for nothing. Regenerated sheep rest in Christ, knowing that they are safe, being kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Four Revealed Facts

Acts 4:12

Here are four facts revealed in Holy Scripture which are true of every man, woman, and child in this world. Without exception, these four things are true of us all.

1.    We are all sinners (Romans 3:23; 5:12). ÒThere is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.Ó Some of us have been saved by the grace of God, and some are still unsaved, lost, without Christ; but we are all sinners. We are sinners by birth (Psalm 51:5; 58:3), sinners by nature (Mark 7:15, 21-23), sinners by choice, always Òrejoicing to do evilÓ and Òdevising to do evil!Ó And we are sinners by practice (Isaiah 64:6). — ÒMan, at his best estate, is altogether vanity.Ó — ÒHow abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?Ó

2.    Because we are all sinners, depraved, willing transgressors of GodÕs holy law, we all by nature are justly the objects of GodÕs wrath (Ephesians 2:1-3; Galatians 3:10). ÒThe soul that sinneth it shall die.Ó You and I, by nature, by birth, by choice, and by practice are criminals against the throne of the most high God.

We have broken GodÕs law in every point, and we continually do so day by day (Exodus 20:1-17). We have all taken the incarnate God and crucified him in our hearts (Hebrews 10:26-29). All sin is an attack upon GodÕs throne. Unbelief is decided agreement with our LordÕs tormentors. Unbelief cries out, ÒCrucify him! Crucify him! His blood be upon us and upon our children!Ó We have all sinned against the goodness, grace, and mercy of God revealed in the gospel (Matthew 11:21-25). Our rebellion and sin against the God of heaven is willful, deliberate, and voluntary (Proverbs 1:24, 30-31). And Òthe wages of sin is death!Ó Hell is what we deserve. Hell is what justice demands. Until you acknowledge that you justly deserve GodÕs wrath; you will never seek his mercy.

3.    We are all sinners, justly condemned sinners, by nature; and we have no ability to change our natural condition.

Poor souls! We are as helpless as we are depraved. There is nothing you can do to change your sinful nature, nothing you can do to win GodÕs favor, nothing you can do to escape the wrath of God. We cannot satisfy the offended justice of God. We cannot perform righteousness. We cannot change our sinful nature. We are dead, entirely without spiritual life or ability. We have no capacity for change, and no ability to change our condition (Jeremiah 13:23).

4.    The only way you and I can ever be saved, saved from our sins and saved from the wrath of God, is by the grace of God, through the righteousness and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the sinnerÕs Substitute.

GodÕs way of salvation is Christ alone. — ÒNeither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved Christ alone is salvation. And the only way we can obtain salvation in Christ is by faith (Romans 10:9; Isaiah 45:22; Matthew 11:28-30; John 3:14-16).
