When God sees Him, then God sees me; so, everything is well! —

Baptism and Salvation

You will search the New Testament in vain to find any hint that baptism is saving, meritorious, or efficacious to any purpose except as the believer’s public confession of and identification with the Lord Jesus Christ. And you will search the New Testament in vain to find anyone looked upon as a believer who was not baptized. Saved sinners confess Christ in believer’s baptism.

Perfect Vision

“When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.”

(Matthew 17:8)

Peter, James, and John heard the voice of God on the Mount of Transfiguration and fell on their faces, and were sore afraid. The Lord Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, be not afraid.” What a blessed picture of that one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. They had seen Moses there, the lawgiver, but he could never be a mediator, for “by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.” They also saw Elijah, but he could not be a mediator. Like all the prophets, he spoke of Christ. Only the Lord Jesus has that authority. God says to every trembling, guilty sinner, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” These same disciples would after this declare, “Him hath God exalted with his right hand a Prince and a Saviour.”

“Jesus Only with Themselves”

These words are from Mark’s account (Mark 9:8). Though our Savior trod the winepress alone and of the people there was none with him, none to help, none to uphold, yet he represented all those he came to save. The Great Shepherd laid down his life for his sheep. He acted by himself alone, but not for himself alone. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” Yes, blessed be his name, he obtained eternal redemption for us. He gave his life a ransom for many. “And I looked, and lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him...” — With him forever!

“One when He died, One when He rose;

One when He triumphed ‘oer His foes.

One when in heaven, He took His seat,

And heaven sang all hell’s defeat.”

“Jesus was Found Alone”

The one God the Father spoke of and commanded them to hear was not Moses or Elijah, but his Son. Christ is the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, one with God, and himself God. Luke alone tells us that “when the voice was past, and Jesus was found alone,” Moses and Elijah talked with him about his decease, his exodus, he should accomplish at Jerusalem (Luke 9:30-36). They spoke of that is the subject of all the Scriptures, Old and New Testaments. That is the glorious subject which causes angels to adore and wonder. That is the only subject the apostle Paul was determined to know. And that will be the subject of the song of multitudes of redeemed sinners throughout eternity. The Lord Jesus Christ alone will be the one that the whole population of heaven rejoices to proclaim. — “Worthy is the Lamb!” I try to sing to his glory now, but it’s mixed with too much of self, but soon…

“When with the ransomed in glory His face I at last shall see,

‘Twill be my joy thru the ages to sing of His love to me.”

Understanding Types and Parables

Types are like our Lord’s parables. They are intended to show us one, specific thing, not many things, just one. Types usually stand on just two legs: their natural, historic meaning and their spiritual, allegorical meaning. They are bipeds, not centipedes with a hundred pairs of legs.

      Adam was a type Christ our Covenant Head and Representative (Romans 5:12-21). That doesn’t mean that there was some hidden, mystical, spiritual significance to the size of his feet or the shape of his toes. Sarah and Hagar and their sons, Isaac and Ishmael, were an allegory about law and grace (Galatians 4). But that does not mean that everything they said, did, and experienced were typical. David slaying Goliath was a clear, instructive type of Christ’s conquering sin and Satan in the accomplishment of our salvation. But it is a mistake to try to find something spiritually significant in the sling he used, or the five smooth stones he carried in his hand.

      If you try to find more in the type than is intended by the Spirit of God in giving it, you mar the beauty of the picture.

Chronologies and Genealogies

“So all Israel were reckoned by genealogies.” (1 Chronicles 9:1)

If you are like me, your eyes quickly become weary and you began to get a little sleepy reading chronologies and genealogies in Holy Scripture. Who can read lists of names and not become bored, even when reading those lists in the Word of God?

It is possible to fight off the boredom and the guilt that follows it. I do not suggest that the boredom can be altogether relieved. Flesh is still flesh! But, I promise you, this will help. — Every time you start to become bored with chronologies and genealogies given in Holy Scripture, every time you come to lists of names, records, and events preserved for us by divine inspiration, read them. Do not skip over them.

They all point to our Lord Jesus Christ. The genealogical records, so meticulously preserved by the Jews, clearly and undeniably show the rightful claim of the Man Christ Jesus to the throne of David as the Messiah. He who is the God-man is the Woman’s Seed, Abraham’s Seed, and David’s Son and David’s Lord.

Christ is he in whom the purpose of those records was fulfilled. It is as though the Lord Jehovah had said, concerning each historic document of Inspiration, “Destroy it not, for a blessing is in it” (Isaiah 65:8). The Lord Jesus was folded up in the seed of Israel, in whom all the family of God must be blessed. These genealogies, though they may not yield much comfort to our hearts or peace to our minds, are of great importance in tracing out the descent of our blessed Lord Jesus from Adam to his incarnation.

Oh, what grace! Oh, what mercy! Oh, what wisdom! — “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out” (Romans 11:33).

As you read those records that seem so boring, always look for some display of God’s great mercy, love, and grace in them as well. Every word of God is pure, and all Scripture, given by inspiration of God, is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness.
