Bow to the Scepter of His Love Don Fortner

(Tune: #355 — From Every Stormy Wind that Blows —LM)

1.    Let chosen, ransomed sinners tell

The glories which in Jesus dwell;

His everlasting God-head sing,

And triumph in Him as our King!

2.    The heavÕnly hosts adore His name,

Who bore His peopleÕs guilt and shame;

All sacred beauties in Him meet,

Come, bow and worship at His feet!

3.    HeÕs lovely in the realms above;

His loveliness believers prove;

HeÕs lovely both in life and death,

O let His praise employ your breath.

4.    He reigns and shall forever reign. —

No more let ransomÕd souls complain!

Bow to the scepter of His love;

And soon weÕll reign with Him above!

The Token of the Blood

Exodus 12:13

The Word of God has a scarlet thread running through it, like the cord Rahab hung out of her window. That scarlet thread, by which these 66 books is bound together, which unifies everything written upon the pages of Inspiration, is the blood, the precious blood of Christ.

Blood Essential

The Blood and The Scriptures speak constantly about the blood. It is written in the books of the law, ÒThe life of the flesh is in the blood.Ó God told Moses, ÒThe blood shall be to you for a token.Ó He said, ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you.Ó When the high priest went into the holy of holies on the Day of Atonement, he went in with blood. No man can come to God without blood atonement. When our Lord instituted the LordÕs Supper, he took the cup of wine, held it before his disciples and said, ÒThis is the blood of the New Testament, shed for many for the remission of sins.Ó In Hebrews 9:22, we read, ÒWithout shedding of blood is no remission.Ó That makes the blood a matter of infinitely immense importance.

      These days, it is common for preachers, churches, theologians, and hymn writers to say as little as possible about the blood. We have become so educated, refined, and sophisticated that talking about blood is considered improper, unsophisticated, and rude. But it is still true that Òwithout shedding of blood is no remission.Ó The whole of GodÕs revelation of himself, the whole of the gospel, the whole of salvation is wrapped up the blood, the precious, sin-atoning blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (Hebrews 9:12; 1 Peter 18-21). The shedding of ChristÕs precious blood was and is absolutely essential to the saving of our souls. — Let us ever cherish the blood of Christ as that which is precious above all things.

Blood Token

The blood sprinkled upon the doorposts and lentil, portraying the blood of Christ sprinkled upon our hearts by the saving operations of God the Holy Ghost, was to the children of Israel a token. A token is a sign or a banner of something. And the blood of Christ sprinkled upon our hearts by the Spirit of God is GodÕs token within by which every believing sinner is assured ofÉ

  • His Infinite Love (Romans 5:11).
  • His Covenant Blessings Bestowed (Ephesians 1:3-6).
  • Righteousness and Free Justification (Romans 3:21-26).
  • Perfect Satisfaction in Christ (Hebrews 10:10-14).
  • Complete Forgiveness (Isaiah 44:22).
  • Free Access to God (Hebrews 10:19-22).
  • Blessed Safety and Security (Romans 8:1, 33-34).

      When the Lord God comes in judgment, in providential judgment to any nation, any house, or any age, or when he comes in the final judgment of that great day when the elements be on fire shall melt with a fervent heat, GodÕs elect are safe. He has promised, ÒWhen I see the blood, I will pass over you!Ó

The Blood

Spilt, Sprinkled, Seen

Exodus 12:13

The blood of the lamb had to be spilt by the head of each family in Israel, sprinkled by him upon the doorposts and lentil of his house, and it had to be seen. Without these three things, Israel could not be saved. So it is with the Israel of God.

Blood Spilt

The blood had to be spilt, violently spilt, spilt by God himself, the Head of the family. The blood spilt is our salvation and safety. GodÕs people are safe because, only because they are Òunder the blood.Ó Our salvation, our safety, our security is in the blood, only in the blood of Christ, the blood spilt by the hand of divine justice at Calvary. The blood of the Lamb had to be spilt, violently spilt, or we could never be saved.

            Why? Why did the Son of God suffer such a death? Why did God so torment his beloved Son and kill him in such a horribly ignominious way? The justice of God had to be satisfied. There was no necessity for God to save anyone. Salvation is altogether the free gift of his grace. But, having determined to save his elect from the ruins of fallen humanity, the only way God could save his people and forgive their sins was by the death of Christ. — ÒWithout shedding of blood is no remissionÓ (Hebrews 9:22). The justice of God had to be satisfied in order for God to save his people; and the only thing that could ever satisfy the justice of God is the blood of Christ. The blood must be spilt, or sinners cannot be saved.

Blood Sprinkled

And the blood spilt must be sprinkled (Exodus 12:7). As it was spilt by God, only God can sprinkle the blood upon his people. Our RedeemerÕs precious blood must be applied as well as shed. It had to be sprinkled in heaven, accepted by God; and it must be sprinkled upon, personally applied to, each ransomed soul (Hebrews 9:19-20; 12:24).

When the Holy Ghost, whose office it is to take of the things of Christ and show them to his people, gives the heaven-born soul faith in Christ, he sprinkles the conscience from dead works and declares justification in the soul. So that every sinner, taught of God, has the testimony from God himself that Enoch had, Òthat he pleases GodÓ (Hebrews 9:12-14; 11:5-6).

Blood Seen

The blood by which we are redeemed, justified, and saved is blood that is seen, seen by God himself with approbation, approval, and satisfaction. Our seeing the blood by faith is not redemption, but the blessed experience of redemption. It is GodÕs seeing the blood that is our redemption and salvation. Those Israelites inside their houses could not see the blood. It is GodÕs eye upon the blood that is salvation. And the Lord God saw the blood from everlasting, accepted it from everlasting, and accepted us by the blood from everlasting. (Revelation 13:8; 17:8; Romans 8:29-30; Ephesians 1:3-5; 2 Timothy 1:9-10).
