Grace Baptist Church of Danville

April 16, 2017

There are only two kinds of preachers: those who are used and those who use, those who labor in the Word and doctrine of Christ and those who loiter about, those who are faithful and those who are unfaithful, those who devote their lives to the cause of Christ and those who devote their lives to something else.

ÒHe is PreciousÓ Don Fortner

(Tune: #223 — Arise, My Soul, Arise! —66.66.88)

1.    Proclaim your SaviorÕs name

And show His matchless worth,

Make known His saving fame,

`Til His praise fills the earth! —

Let ransomed souls proclaim His name,

Until our Savior comes again!

2.    His person, grace, and might,

His offices, and love,

All sources of delight,

To ransomed souls above.

In their glad songs IÕll bear a part,

For Christ is precious to my heart.

3.    My Brother, Surety, Friend,

My Prophet, Priest, and King,

FaithÕs Author, Object, End,

To Christ alone I cling. —

His precious blood redeemed my soul;

He found me maimed and made me whole!

4.    In comfort and distress,

In pleasantness and gall,

Jesus alone can bless,

For He is All in all.

In life and death, by faith we sing

That ÒHe is preciousÓ — Christ our King!

ÒMadeÓ

2 Corinthians 5:21

Throughout the New Testament the word ÒmadeÓ is used to describe that which our blessed Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, became as our Mediator. ÒThe Word was made fleshÓ (John 1:14). GodÕs dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Òwas made of the seed of David according to the fleshÓ (Romans 1:3). Just as Òthe first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spiritÓ (1 Corinthians 15:45). ÒChrist hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a treeÓ (Galatians 3:13). ÒGod sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the lawÓ (Galatians 4:4-5). And the Lord Jesus was Òmade a surety of a better testamentÓ (Hebrews 7:22).

In all those places, the word translated ÒmadeÓ means Òcaused to be,Ó or Òcaused to become.Ó In 2nd Corinthians 5:21 we read, ÒHe hath made him sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.Ó Here, the Holy Spirit inspired the apostle to use a different, even stronger word for Òmade.Ó Here, the word translated ÒmadeÓ means, Òproduced, created, or mysteriously, wondrously caused to become.Ó

Christ Made Sin

When the Lord of Glory died in our room and stead upon the cursed tree, he was caused to be, caused to become sin for us! He was not made to be something that looked like sin, or made to be treated as though he were sin. No. He was made sin for us. He who knew no sin was made sin in all its hideous ugliness. Had he not been made sin for us, he could never have been punished for our sins by the justice of God (Proverbs 17:15).

Sinners Made Righteous

Because our blessed Savior was made sin for us, and was punished for our sins to the full satisfaction of justice, he has completely and forever put away our sins by the sacrifice of himself; and we have been made the righteousness of God in him. By virtue of our union with Christ, GodÕs elect are righteous, perfectly righteous before God, because Christ is made of God unto us righteousness; and we are the righteousness of God in him. These things are too profound, too great, too mysterious for me to comprehend; but they are not too great for me to believe. Just as Christ was made sin for me, in the same way and to the same extent, I am made the righteousness of God in him. Just as Christ was punished (justly rewarded) for my sin that was made his as my Substitute, I shall be justly rewarded with everlasting life and glory for his righteousness that has been made mine by his grace.

No Debate

I am astonished and sickened by the fact that some find these things Òalarming,Ó Òdangerous,Ó even Òheretical.Ó They are not even debatable. I cannot imagine why anyone would even think about debating them. Can that be dangerous or heretical, which God has stated? Is it possible to state the doctrine of the cross in the very words of Holy Scripture and yet misstate it? Of course not! It must be concluded that anyone who objects to these sweet revelations of our God, so plainly given in his Word, has no regard for the Word of God, has for his object something other than the glory of God, and desires to corrupt the people of God Òfrom the simplicity that is in Christ

ÒTake Heed How Ye HearÓ

Luke 8:18

C. H. Spurgeon (1834-1892)

Two learned doctors are angrily discussing the nature of food, and allowing their meal to lie untasted, while a simple countryman is eating as heartily as he can of that which is set before him. The religious world is full of quibblers, critics, and sceptics, who, like the doctors, fight over Christianity without profit either to themselves or others; those are far happier who imitate the farmer and feed upon the Word of God, which is the true food of the soul. LutherÕs prayer was, ÒFrom nice questions the Lord deliver us.Ó Questioning with honesty and candour is not to be condemned, when the object is to Òprove all things, and hold fast that which is good;Ó but to treat revelation as if it were a football to be kicked from man to man is irreverence, if not worse. Seek the true faith, by all manner of means, but do not spend a whole life in finding it, lest you be like a workman who wastes the whole day in looking for his tools. Hear the true Word of God; lay hold upon it, and spend your days not in raising hard questions, but in feasting upon precious truth.

It is, no doubt, very important to settle the point of General or Particular Redemption; but for unconverted men, the chief matter is to look to the Redeemer on the cross with the eye of faith. Election is a doctrine about which there is much discussion, but he who has made his election sure, finds it a very sweet morsel. Final perseverance has been fought about in all time; but he who by grace continues to rest in Jesus to the end, knows the true enjoyment of it. Reader, argue, if you please, but remember that believing in the Lord Jesus gives infinitely more enjoyment than disputing can ever afford you. If you are unsaved, your only business is with the great command, ÒBelieve!Ó and even if you have passed from death unto life, it is better to commune with Jesus than to discuss doubtful questions. When MelancthonÕs mother asked him what she must believe amidst so many disputes, he, knowing her to be trusting to Jesus in a simple-hearted manner, replied, ÒGo on, mother, to believe and pray as you have done, and do not trouble yourself about controversy.Ó So say we to all troubled souls, ÒRest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him.Ó

ÒThy PeopleÓ

Psalm 3:8

Pastor Marvin Stalnaker, Katy Baptist Church, Fairmont, West Virginia

Deliverance from the power and bondage of sin pertains to God alone. A believer has no expectation of saving himself and has no confidence in the power of his flesh. This is a blessing that comes only from the Lord and is said to be, Òupon thy people.Ó         What a sweet word of comfort to every regenerated sinner made to see something of his desperate need and desire to be named, ÒThy PeopleÓ — His people in creation, in electing grace, in redemption by the blood of Christ, and by their willingness to come to him, casting all their hope upon him, in the day of his power. What a glorious blessing and name — ÒThy people.Ó
