Father, I Will Don Fortner

(Tune: #142 — Jesus Shall Reign —LM)

1.    ÒFather, I will,Ó my Savior cries,

Who gave Himself a sacrifice,

ÒThat where I am My ransomed be,

ÒIn perfect union one with Me.

2.    ÒFather, I will,Ó the Lord demands,

And spreads for me His wounded hands,

ÒI will, that all for whom I died,

ÒWith Me be ever glorified.Ó

3.    Rejoice, my soul, and find sweet rest,

Christ Jesus pleads. — I must be blest!

Soon, soon, His glory I shall see,

Who died, and lives, and pleads for me!

ÒI will not say that the sins of GodÕs people were imputed to Christ, though I believe they were; but it seems to me, that in a way more mysterious than that which imputation would express, the sins of GodÕs people were actually laid upon Jesus Christ; that in the view of God, not only was Christ treated as if he had been guilty, but the very sin itself was, I know not how, but according to the text (Isaiah 53:6) it was somehow laid upon the head of Christ Jesus. ÔFor he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.Õ Is it not written, ÔHe shall bear,Ó not merely the punishment of their sin, nor the imputation of their sin, but ÒHe shall bear their iniquities?ÕÓ                                                                                                                            — C. H. Spurgeon

ÒMaketh IntercessionÓ

Romans 8:27

Whatever gifts of grace we possess are the gifts of God the Holy Spirit, who is the ascension gift of Christ to his people (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). But often our faith is so mixed with unbelief that as Peter sank in the waters, so our hearts sink in darkness until we are made to cry, ÒLord, save me, I perish!Ó Then he stretches out his hand and lifts us up. How often our love to Christ is so cold that we cannot call it love, though love him we do. Like Peter, we have a strange way of showing it! Yet, our Lord knows how to draw out the confession, ÒThou knowest that I love theeEven the unbelieving cry of his disciples, ÒMaster, carest thou not that we perish?Ó arouses the attention of our Savior; and he soon answers, ÒPeace, be still!Ó

His Knowledge

The Lord Jesus knows even the whisperings of our hearts, and is ready to answer them (John 16:19). He is always more ready to teach than we are to be taught, more ready to help than we are to be helped, more ready to answer prayer than we are to pray, and more ready to forgive than we are to be forgiven. Our Savior knows the deepest, truest desires of our hearts. He Òknoweth the mind of the Spirit.Ó He knows our faith in him, our love for him, our longings to be like him, our desire to do his will, our yearnings for his presence, and our concerns for his glory.

ÒHe knows the words I mean to speak, ere from my opening lips they break.Ó

His Intercession

Let us ever be confident of and rejoice in the intercession of the Heart Searcher, Òbecause he maketh intercession for the saints.Ó Here Paul speaks of two intercessions: the intercession of Christ for us in heaven and the intercession of the Spirit in us on earth. I have shown you how the Spirit makes intercession in us. Now I want you to see how that Christ makes intercession for us. To make intercession is to interpose with a plea, to plead for another, to entreat for the acceptance of another.

We have a beautiful, graphic type and picture of ChristÕs intercession in Leviticus 16, where God gave commandment concerning the work of the high priest on the Day of Atonement. The sin-offering is Christ, the Lamb of God (v. 9). The burning coals of fire represent the sufferings of Christ (v. 12). The sweet incense portrays the intercession of Christ (v. 13). The sprinkling of the blood upon the mercy-seat seven times speak of complete atonement for all Òthe Israel of GodÓ by ChristÕs precious blood (v. 14). And the scapegoat beautifully typifies our Lord Jesus Christ who took our sins away (vv. 20-22).

Atonement is the basis of intercession; and the two can never be separated. Without atonement intercession could not be made. With atonement intercession cannot fail! And the atonement and intercession were made for the same people. The Lord Jesus Christ, by his death on the cross made atonement for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3). By his resurrection life he makes intercession for us (Hebrews7:25; Zechariah 3:1-5). The perpetuity and efficacy of his priesthood and the prevalence of his intercession are the glory of his gospel (1 John 2:1-2).

ÒAccording to the Will of GodÓ

Romans 8:27

Here is the glorious method of the Heart SearcherÕs method of intercession. —– ÒAccording to the will of God.Ó Christ our Mediator and the heavenly Father are ever one in will, word, and work. On earth he did his FatherÕs will perfectly. In heaven he intercedes Òaccording to the will of God.Ó He seeks for us that which it is the will of God to do and give, no more and no less (Romans 8:28-39).

As God

But notice the words Òthe will ofÓ are in italics. That means that they were added by the translators. The phrase might be better translated, Òaccording to God.Ó If that is the case, PaulÕs meaning is that Christ intercedes for us as God. He does not plead as a suppliant on bended knees or with uplifted eyes, but with the dignity and grace of One who is God, One who never sinned, One who knows nothing of failure. He pleads with God upon the basis of GodÕs own holy character as a just and true God. He pleads with God as an equal; for this Man who is our great High Priest is God.

We are represented before the throne of God by a holy, sinless Man, who is himself God. Before he entered into heaven, he put away our sins, so that our sins could never appear against us in the presence of God. And all that he seeks from God for us, it is the will of God to do!

His People

ÒHe maketh intercession for the saints.Ó His people, those for whom the Son of God makes intercession, are saints. Saved sinners are saints, GodÕs holy ones, GodÕs sanctified ones, sanctified by eternal election, effectual redemption, and divine regeneration.

We are transgressors. We would never think of denying that fact. And we rejoice to know that Christ makes Òintercession for transgressorsÓ (Isaiah 53:12). But we are not transgressors, we are not sinners before God, in the sight of God.

Taking John 17 as the model of ChristÕs intercession, you will notice that the Intercessor never speaks of his people as sinners. He does not offend the ear of his holy Father by calling his dear children sinners or transgressors. Seven times in that chapter, when he refers to us, he speaks of us as those Òwhom thou has given me.Ó He never mentions what we have done, but only what he has done for us. —– ÒI have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.Ó The blood of his atonement has washed away all our sins, and the sentence of eternal justice from the throne of God upon all his elect is — ÒJustified from all things!Ó — ÒCleansed from all sin!Ó — ÒAccepted in the Beloved!Ó — ÒComplete in Christ!Ó

ÒThere David shines without a stain;

UriahÕs blood shall neÕer be known,

For like a millstone in the sea

Are all his black transgressions thrown!Ó
