All Glory to JehovahÕs Name Don Fortner

(Tune: #228 — My Faith has Found a Resting Place —CMD)

1.    All glory to JehovahÕs name —

Almighty God, our King!

His truth and faithfulness proclaim;

His grace and mercy sing.

He spoke in love, eÕer time began,

His purposes of grace,

Which formed the glorious gospel plan

To save His chosen race.

2.    He spoke the promises that shine

Upon the Sacred Page,

In Christ they are yea and amen,

Secure from age to age!

So, rest my soul. My heart be stilled. —

Jehovah cannot lie!

All that He spoke shall be fulfilled. —

On that we can rely.

Strong Consolation

Hebrews 6: 17-19

If only one of GodÕs sheep were to perish, the purpose of God would be frustrated, the power of God resisted, and the promise of God broken; the faithfulness of God would be a mockery and the Word of God proved to be a lie. The assurance of faith is not in my ability to hold on, but the immutable character of my God, who loved me and gave himself for me.                                                                            — Pastor Darvin Pruitt

GodÕs Providence and the Remnant

Isaiah 1:9

Everything God does, he does for a remnant Òthe remnant of Jacob.Ó All providence is for Òa remnant.Ó All men benefit from GodÕs goodness to his remnant. Rain and sunshine, plenty and pestilence, drought and darkness, peace and war come upon all men alike. But they come for and belong to the remnant (1 Corinthians 3:21; Psalm 57:2). — ÒAll things are yours!Ó — ÒI will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth [all things] for me.Ó Blessed are they who know and understand Òall the works of the Lord, that he has done for IsraelÓ (Joshua 24:31). They go to Òtheir tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the Lord had done É for Israel his peopleÓ (1 Kings 8:66). God chose his Israel. God gave the Law for his Israel. God made atonement for his Israel. God called his Israel. God performs all things for his Israel, his elect, Òthe remnant of Jacob!Ó And, to top it all off, he promises to save his Israel (Isaiah 46:13).

A Small Remnant

Isaiah 1:9

We must never forget that Òthe remnant of JacobÓ in this world is always a very small remnant (Isaiah 1:9; 16:14). In the end, it will be a number which no man can number, a great multitude, ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands. But at any one time in this world, in any society, in any place, GodÕs remnant is small. As it is written, ÒMany are called, but few are chosenÓ (Matthew 22:14). Only a few go in at the strait gate and walk in the narrow way.

God has always done his work with a small, feeble remnant. He would not use Gideon and his army until he had whittled the army down to 300 men who were too scared to stoop down and drink water (Judges 7:5-6). In NoahÕs day, one man found grace in the eyes of the Lord. In AbrahamÕs day, one family obtained mercy. In all the ages of the Old Testament, one nation was called. After three years of preaching, our Lord Jesus had only 120 who worshipped in his name.

Throughout the ages, God has used a very small, feeble remnant to build his kingdom. But that remnant always prevails and is never defeated. His remnant (his church) goes forth in his strength to his cause. Acting under the name and authority of the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the worm Jacob is enabled to thresh the mountains (Isaiah 41:14-15).

As a lion, strong and mighty, powerful and courageous, every foe is utter weakness before GodÕs Church. As we assault the gates of hell in the name of Christ by the preaching of the gospel, the very gates of hell shall fall before us. Because the Lion of the tribe of Judah is at our head, none can prevail over us!

God works through a small, feeble remnant, so that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). — Let us never despise small things!

God the Holy Spirit and Prayer

ÒLikewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Ó (Romans 8:26)

Though we are freed from all condemnation, blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ, and secured from all possibility of separation from the love of God in Christ, still we are weak and needy creatures. Our weaknesses great! Our infirmities are many! Without the indwelling Spirit of God, we are nothing and we can do nothing!

Our Ignorance and Sin

Particularly, Paul says, ÒWe know not what we should pray for as we ought!Ó Like the disciples of old, we feel our need to cry daily, ÒLord teach us to prayÓ (Luke 11:1). All of us are apt to ask for things that are not good for us, because we do not know what is best. We do not know what we need (Job 3:1-3; Exodus 32:32-33; Jonah 4:3; 2 Corinthians 12:8-9).

What is worse yet, as James tells us plainly, our prayers are often nothing but the expressions of our own carnal lusts and fleshly desires (James 4:3).

GodÕs Overwhelming Grace

Here is GodÕs overwhelming grace. — ÒBut the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Ó We are fickle; but God is faithful. He who began his good work of grace in us will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6). The Author of our faith will be the Finisher of it (Hebrews 12:2).

Paul says, the Holy Spirit Òmaketh intercession for us.Ó But how? We know that Christ alone makes intercession for sinners with God. He alone is the Mediator between God and men (1 Timothy 2:5-6). The Holy Spirit does not intercede for us with God the Father; but rather he intercedes with us and for us. As Christ is our Advocate in heaven, he is our Advocate in our hearts.

God the Holy Ghost, dwelling in us, intercedes for us in the sense that he teaches us to pray. All true prayer is his work in us. He shows us our needs. He stirs our hearts to prayer, putting in our hearts the desire for what God has purposed. He gives us liberty and boldness at the Throne of Grace, through the sprinkling of the blood of Christ.

And God the Holy Ghost, dwelling in us, puts within us Ògroanings which cannot be uttered,Ó sighs that baffle words. Like Moses and Hannah, who prayed silently, though ardently, the saints of God are caused by the Spirit to pour out their hearts to God, though often we are unable to express in words the great burden of our hearts. Often our natural desires and our true, spiritual desires conflict with one another; and it is our true, spiritual desires which are the work of God the Holy Spirit.

Like our dear Savior in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:38-39), when we pray, if we truly pray, what we really want is the will of God and the glory of God. We subject all our desires to those two things, bowing our will to his will and his glory.
