Our Lord Jesus Christ divides the whole human race into two groups. The reprobate he calls Òthe world.Ó The elect he calls them Òwhich thou gavest me out of the world.Ó

How Good and Wise JehovahÕs Ways Don Fortner

(Tune: # 497 — When I can Read My Title Clear — CM)

1.    How good and wise JehovahÕs ways,

And infinite His love!

Awake and sing your SaviorÕs praise, —

You who His goodness prove.

2.     He brings the blind by paths unknown,

Up from the gates of hell;

Goodness and mercy to His throne,

At last, bring them to dwell.

3.    What crooked things confuse our minds!

But those His grace makes straight!

His chosen Christ in darkness finds,

That He may light create.

4.    Jehovah promised these to do,

And says, HeÕll not forsake.

Our God is faithful, just, and true! —

His -word He will not break.

5.    All things are working for our good,

Though dark, and crooked now;

Oh, give us grace, our faithful God,

To trust and humbly bow!

ÒBehold my ServantÓ

Isaiah 42:1-4

In the opening verses of this chapter the Lord God calls for us to behold his elect Servant, whom he has from eternity appointed to the work of redeeming and saving his people, the One in whom his soul delights. The One of whom he speaks is our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (Matthew 12:15-21). In the first four verses of this 42nd chapter the Lord God tells us four things about our dear Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, as his Servant. — These things were written by GodÕs prophet Isaiah more than 750 years before the incarnation of our Redeemer!

1.    He will bring righteousness to the Gentiles (v. 1).

2.    He will be a meek, voluntary Servant to the will of God (v. 2).

3.    He will be a tender, compassionate Savior (v. 3).

4.    He will effectually accomplish all his work (v. 4).

The Lord Jesus Christ is an appointed Savior, a qualified Savior, a willing Savoir, and an able, effectual, almighty Savior. — ÒHe shall not fail!Ó That revelation is enough to flood our hearts with joy, praise, thanksgiving, and adoration. — What a great Savior our Savior is!

ÒSuch a Dead DogÓ

Pastor David Eddmenson

Upon arriving to services one Wednesday evening, to my surprise, there was an old, mangy, rejected and forsaken dog sitting on the front porch of the church building. I was appalled and repulsed at the dogÕs sad appearance and horrible condition. This poor creature was in bad shape, yet all I can remember thinking was, ÒI wish this dog would go away.Ó I am so grateful that when my merciful, gracious and compassionate Savior looked upon me that His attitude was not like mine. ÒWhat is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?Ó (2 Samuel 9:8) In as bad shape as that poor dog appeared in my sight, how much worse do I, a DEAD DOG sinner appear in GodÕs?  ÒPrecious Lord, how merciful, thou art to me.Ó

ÒThe People Rose up to PlayÓ

Missionary Daniel Parks

The Holy Spirit warns saints in 1 Corinthians 10:7: ÒNeither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.Ó

He refers to the incident recorded in Exodus chapter thirty-two. We there read that Israel made an idol (vv.1-8), and that before it they Òrose up to playÓ (v.6) and were ÒdancingÓ (v.19).

Idolaters in other places and times worship in a manner similar to that of those just cited. Ancient Baalists Òleaped upon the altar which was madeÓ (1 Kings 18:26). Modern Voodooists rise up to play, raise their hands even higher, dance, sway, swoon, whirl, run, jump, convulse, and so forth.

Many professing Christians conduct themselves in like manner in their church services. They act like voodoo-christians!

It therefore is with good reason that GodÕs church is exhorted ÒNeither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.Ó

For Those Who Like This Kind of Book

Pastor Paul Mahan

Abraham Lincoln once commented after reading a certain book, ÒFor those who like this kind of book, this is the kind of book they will like.Ó The Bible (Biblia, book) is the Book of God, written by God, about the Son of God and His glorious salvation. This Book is about the King and His Kingdom. This Book is about mercy for the guilty, grace for the poor and needy, love for the unlovely, pardon for the guilty, help for the helpless, righteousness for the unrighteous, food for the hungry, water for the thirsty, clothes for the naked, comfort for the mourner, courage for the coward, freedom for the captive, husband for the widow, Father for the orphan, friend for the friendless, home for the homeless; this Book is the Book of GodÕs salvation for such who love it. And so I say to those who like this kind of Book, this is the kind of Book you will like.

Wondrous Grace!

ÒI will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.Ó (Isaiah 42:16)

When I review my life and trace the hand of the Lord my God in it, should I attempt to write a book about just the things I know, by the observation of experience, about his wondrous mercy, love, and grace by which he has led me in the path he appointed for me, what a huge volume might be written! I was blind, utterly blind to my own heart, blind to the glory of God shining forth in the face of Christ, blind to GodÕs mercy, love, and grace, blind to his holiness, blind to his justice, blind to his righteousness, and blind to his gospel. But he has made darkness light!

Before he saved me by his grace, God my Savior ordered my steps, though I knew him not, despised him, and rebelled against him at every turn. He hedged up my way; and none could deliver me from the grip of his grace. And since the day of my calling, he has proven himself faithful to this object of his relentless, unceasing mercy! He has brought me a way that I knew not, and led me in paths that I could never have known, had he not done it. And, blessed be his name, he is still graciously performing the same, making darkness light, and crooked things straight before me!

In the light of all that I read in his Word, and all that I know of his goodness and mercy, of his grace and love, of his faithfulness and truth, I have every reason to believe that as it has been, so it shall be. He has promised, ÒThese things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.Ó He who had mercy upon me when I asked not for it, when I did not even know I needed it, will not now take his mercy from me. He still hedges up my way; and none can rip me from the grip of his grace! — ÒSurely goodness and mercy (Blessed hounds of heaven!) shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever!Ó
