That Glorious Better Part — Don Fortner

(Tune: #66 — Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts — LM)

1.    This is that glorious better part,

Most dear to each believerÕs heart: —

Christ Jesus dwelling in the soul,

The sovereign Monarch of the whole.

2.    Pursuing His eternal love,

He comes in mercy from above,

And enters by almighty grace,

The hearts of all His chosen race.

3.    His Spirit plants His grace within;

There He subdues the power of sin,

Renews, transforms, and stores it well! —

And there He shall forever dwell.

4.    Does Christ the Savior dwell in me? —

Then I shall endless glory see!

He is my Hope, in Him I rest,

In Christ I am forever blest!

ÒThe cross of our Lord Jesus Christ shall never be discovered a miscarriage.Ó

Sufficient Grace

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

GodÕs grace is sufficient. Oh, there is an infinite, super abounding, overflowing sufficiency in the grace of God to meet all the needs of all his people forever. No matter who you are, no matter what your needs may be, no matter what circumstances you are in, if you are a believer, if you trust the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord God says to you — ÒMy grace is sufficient for thee!Ó His grace isÉ

  • Sufficient to sustain you in your trials (Isaiah 43:1-5).
  • Sufficient to uphold you in temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13).

á      Sufficient to enable you to do his will. Someone said, ÒThe Spirit of God will never lead you where the grace of God will not keep you.Ó — ÒFaithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it!Ó

  • Sufficient to uphold, sustain, provide for, and protect his servants and to make their labors effectual to the souls of men. — ÒOur sufficiency is of God!Ó
  • Sufficient even for, no, especially for his fallen saints (Psalm 37:23-25; Mark 16:7).

And in your last hour, when you come to the swelling of the Jordan and are about to cross over to the other side, you will yet hear him say, ÒMy grace is sufficient for thee!Ó

Keeping Grace

1 Peter 5:10

What a joy it is to know that the grace of our God is keeping grace!

He will keep me till the river rolls its waters at my feet;

Then HeÕll bear me safely over, where my Savior I shall meet.

The grace of God is grace that cannot be altered, destroyed, or taken away, not even by anything we may do. Every true believer may confidently sing with Augustus Toplady...

ÒA debtor to mercy alone, of covenant mercy I sing:

Nor fear, with Thy righteousness on, my person and offering to bring.

The terrors of law and of God, with me can have nothing to do;

My SaviorÕs obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view.

The work which His goodness began, the arm of His strength will complete:

His promise is yea and amen, and never was forfeited yet.

Things future, nor things that are now, nor all things below or above

Can make Him His purpose forego, or sever my soul from His love.

My name from the palms of His hands, eternity will not erase:

Impressed on His heart it remains in marks of indelible grace.

Yes, I to the end shall endure, as sure as the earnest is given;

More happy, but not more secure, the glorified spirits in heaven!Ó

If you are a believer, GodÕs keeping grace is as sure to you now as his covenant grace was before ever you were born (Philippians 1:2-6).

Bible Salvation

Ephesians 2:8-10

We all want to be saved. We all want salvation. But if you asked a dozen people to describe salvation, if you asked them what salvation is and where it is to be found, you would get a dozen or more answers.

      With all the confusion and babel there is in this world, it might be wise for us to lay aside the church creeds, confessions, and catechisms, all of them! Lay aside the theology books, the religious papers, and even the opinions of great men of the past. If we could forget what Calvinism says salvation is and what Arminianism says salvation is, we might find out what God says salvation is. Can you, will you do that? Will you lay aside everything you have ever heard, or thought about salvation, and look into the Word of God to see what God says about it?

      Here is one of many descriptions of salvation as it is set before us in the Word of God. This is Bible salvation. Anything that doesnÕt fit with this, or in any way contradicts this is not Bible salvation, but only a religious delusion.

ÒFor by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.Ó (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Complete Deliverance

Salvation is the deliverance of our souls from sin: from its curse, its dominion, and its consequences, and, ultimately, even from its being. Salvation is our complete restoration to God in perfect righteousness and true holiness in the eternal glory of heaven. Salvation is not an experience, but an emancipation, not a decision, but a deliverance, not a reformation, but a restoration.

Grace Alone

Wherever salvation is spoken of in the Word of God four things are always asserted emphatically about it. (1.) Salvation is by grace alone. (2.) Salvation is through faith alone. (3.) Salvation is in Christ alone. And (4.) this salvation, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, is accomplished entirely without works on the part of the one saved.

      My relationship with the eternal God does in great measure determine what I do; but what I do does not in any measure determine my relationship with God. GodÕs grace has much to do with my works; but my works, good or bad, have nothing to do with GodÕs grace. Search the Scriptures for yourself and see if this is or is not what the Book of God declares (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 3:28; 4:3-5, 16; 9:15-16; 11:6; Galatians 2:16; 5:2, 4; 2 Timothy 2:9-10).

       Salvation is the work of the Triune God alone, a gracious work of God wrought for and in sinners, without their aid or assistance, through the mediatorial work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the power of God the Holy Spirit.
