The Banqueting HouseÓ Don Fortner

ÒHe brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.Ó

Song of Solomon 2:4

(Tune: #188 — I Love Thy Kingdom Lord —SM)

1.    Oh, let us sing the praise

Of Christ the Prince of Peace,

Who brings us to His house, and says,

ÒCome feast upon My grace!Ó

2.    His love prepared the feast.

His blood He gives for wine! —

O matchless grace! — His welcome guests

Are helpless souls like mine!

3.    LoveÕs banner HeÕs unfurled;

O Holy Spirit bring

Our souls away from this vain world,

To feast with Christ our King!

Covenant Grace

2 Samuel 23:5

The grace of God, by which we are saved, is set forth in the Word of God as Covenant Grace (Ephesians 1:2-6; 2 Timothy 1:9). Salvation is the result of a covenant made between the three Persons of the Holy Trinity before the world began. In that blessed, firm, and everlasting covenant of grace four things happened...

  1. A people were chosen unto salvation (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14). All who will be saved in time were chosen to salvation before the world began.
  2. A ransom was found for the redemption of the chosen (Job 33:24; Revelation 13:8). Christ, the Son of God, stepped forth and volunteered to die in the room and stead of his chosen; and he was accepted as the Lamb of God slain for us from the foundation of the world.
  3. A seal was pledged. — The Lord Jesus, the great Angel of the Covenant (Revelation 10:1-3), gave command saying, ÒHurt not the earth till we have sealed the hundred and forty and four thousand,Ó my elect by my Spirit (2 Peter 3:9; Ephesians 1:13-14).
  4. The salvation of GodÕs elect was secured in divine predestination. Yes, GodÕs elect were saved from eternity in covenant grace. That is precisely stated in Holy Scripture (Romans 8:28-30; Ephesians 1:3-6).

Saving grace is covenant grace. You cannot understand what the Bible teaches about grace unless you begin in eternity, in the everlasting covenant

Prevenient Grace

Psalm 21:5

Preachers do not talk about it much anymore, because preachers, for the most part, know nothing about the grace of God; but a common theme of meditation and preaching in earlier times was GodÕs prevenient grace.

Prevenient grace is the secret operation of grace that precedes and prepares the way for GodÕs saving grace. Prevenient grace is illustrated in many ways in the Word of God. I will call your attention to just three aspects of it.

  1. Prevenient grace is formative grace (Galatians 1:15; Jeremiah 1:5; 2 Timothy 3:15). It is the grace of God that forms and molds our lives, preparing us as vessels of mercy to receive GodÕs salvation, and preparing us to serve our Savior in the way he has appointed for us.
  2. Prevenient grace is restraining grace (1 Samuel 25:13-26; Genesis 20:6), the grace by which the Lord God restrains us from doing all the evil we are capable of doing, and ready to do, did he not restrain us.
  3. Prevenient grace is overruling grace (Philemon 15), the secret work of GodÕs grace by which he overrules evil for good, by which he overrules the evil we do for our spiritual and everlasting good (Hosea 2:8; Psalm 76:10).

How I rejoice and give thanks to God for his free Covenant Grace and for his secret Prevenient Grace. It is this prevenient grace that keeps and preserves his elect throughout their days of rebellion unto the day of their calling (Jude 1). Prevenient grace gives the angels their charge (Hebrews 1:14).

Regenerating Grace

Ephesians 2:1-10

In Ephesians 2:1-10 God the Holy Ghost inspired the apostle Paul to describe the regenerating grace by which we are saved. The new birth is a regeneration, a resurrection from the dead, a new creation. It takes something more than the choice and decision of your free-will to accomplish that! It takes the grace of God. The grace of God does not offer eternal life. It produces it. The grace of God does not advise sinners to be born again. The grace of God is that by which sinners are born again.

Justifying Grace

Romans 3:24

Justification was accomplished for GodÕs elect long before regeneration is experienced by us. We were justified in the purpose of God eternally (Romans 8:29) in, by, and with our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. We were justified by the purchase of blood at Calvary when our Savior died for us and paid our debt (Romans 4:25).

But in our experience of things justification comes to us and is known by us after regeneration, after we are born of God, as the result of our God given faith in ChristÕs blood atonement (Romans 3:24-28).

All who trust the Lord Jesus Christ are justified freely by the grace of God, without the works of the law. That means three things:

  1. We are completely forgiven of all sin by the blood of Christ in Effectual Redemption.
  2. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to us in Free Justification.
  3. We Òshall not come into condemnation!Ó

We are Òaccepted in the Beloved.Ó Thank God for that grace that freely justifies helpless, guilty sinners!

Sanctifying Grace

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Many who really appear to believe that salvation is by grace alone, when they come to the subject of sanctification, make it to be a work of God and man together. However, the language of the Bible clearly declares sanctification to be a work of grace alone. GodÕs sanctifying grace is threefold. We are sanctified...

  1. By The Decree of God from Eternity (Jude 1).
  2. By The Blood of Christ in Redemption (Hebrews 10:10).

3.    By God the Holy Ghost in Regeneration — by the imparted righteousness of Christ (2 Thessalonians 2:13), being Òmade partakers of the divine nature!Ó

Like every other aspect of salvation, sanctification is by grace alone, In Christ alone (1 Corinthians 1:30). You will search the New Testament in vain to find a solitary reference to partial or progressive sanctification. Sanctification is never referred to as something we do for God. It is something God does for and in us!
