Grace Baptist Church of Danville January 3, 2016
O God of all grace, give me the wisdom and grace to live every day as if I knew it were my last, to speak of, speak to, and treat all with whom I come into contact as if I were sure I must meet them before the day’s end at your Great White Throne of Judgment, and to serve my Redeemer as if I were certain it was my last day to serve him who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Year of Jubilee is Come! – Don Fortner (Tune: #223—Arise, My Soul, Arise—66.66.88) 1. The gospel trumpet blow! Good news from heaven sound. Let all the nations know, to earth’s remotest bound: The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return, all ransomed sinners, home.
2. Christ Jesus, our High Priest, has full atonement made; Come, weary sinners, rest; you need not be afraid: The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return, all ransomed sinners, home.
3. Extol the Lamb of God, the sin-atoning Lamb; Redemption through His blood through all the world proclaim: The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return, all ransomed sinners, home.
4. Enslaved to sin and hell, Christ’s liberty embrace, And safe forever dwell, saved by His wondrous grace: The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return, all ransomed sinners, home.
5. Though you have sold for nought your heritage above, Come, have it back unbought, the gift of God’s free love: The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return, all ransomed sinners, home.
6. Soon, we the trump shall hear, and Christ will come again! In glory He’ll appear, and say to us again— The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return to your eternal home. “Remember” Deuteronomy 15:15
In the Word of God we are constantly told to remember what we are by nature and what the Lord God has done for us by his almighty grace in Christ. The reason for this is both simple and clear. Everything in the kingdom of God is motivated by grace and redemption. That which motivates and governs the lives of God’s saints is their remembrance of redemption and grace
Our Responsibility Great care was taken by God that the Jews never forget what he did for them in bringing them up out of the house of bondage. He intended for them to be reminded of it everywhere they turned and commanded them to remember it forever. The month of their deliverance was made the first month of the year to them (Exodus 12:2). A special ordinance was established to be kept by the children of Israel perpetually, throughout their generations, until the coming of Christ (Exodus 12:3-14). Even in the giving of their law, they were commanded to remember their redemption from Egyptian bondage by the hand of God (Exodus 20:1-3). The Jews were also required to instruct their children in the matter of redemption. The gospel was to be handed down orally, from father to son, generation after generation (Deuteronomy 6:20-21). If this was the responsibility of parents in those days, how much more is it our responsibility to instruct our sons and daughters in the gospel of Christ. Seize every opportunity to do so. Explain to your sons and daughters why you worship where you do, the way you do, and why the cause of Christ’s glory and truth are so important to you. — “We remember that we were bondmen in the land of Egypt, and the LORD our God redeemed us.”
Typical Repeatedly, the Jews were commanded by God, “Thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee.” They were carefully instructed to do so, and how to do so. Yet, their deliverance and redemption was only typical. How much more shall we heed this word from our God! — “Thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the Lord thy God redeemed thee.” Our redemption by Christ and our experience of grace in him must always be held in the forefront, never cast into the background. In all our worship, in all our preaching, in all our teaching, in all our singing, in all our praying, in all our witnessing, in all our living, in all our thoughts, redemption must always be the primary matter of consideration.
Our Doctrine Redemption and grace by Jesus Christ is not the primary thing in our doctrine. It is everything! When Paul endeavors to promote peace between Jew and Gentile, he does so by reminding us of our redemption (Ephesians 2:11-14). When he challenges us to godliness and devotion, he does so by reminding us of our redemption (Romans 6:17-18). When he seeks to promote mercy, brotherly love, kindness, and forgiveness among saints, he reminds us of and motivates us by our experience of redemption and grace in Christ (Ephesians 4:32-5:1).
“Christ is Made unto Us…” — (1 Corinthians 1:30) “But of him are ye in Christ Jesus,” by electing love and regenerating grace, “who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” God has put all things in Christ, made Christ to be all things to all his people, and given us all things in Christ. We are complete in him. — Christ is our Wisdom. — “The fear of the Lord,” that is faith in Christ, “is the beginning of wisdom.” Christ is the Revelation of God. And he shows us the wisdom of God in redemption, causing us to see how that God can be just and the Justifier of all who believe, making us wise unto salvation. Christ is our Righteousness. — We have no righteousness of our own. But Christ is “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” His righteousness has been so thoroughly and perfectly made ours that we are “the righteousness of God in him” and calls us by his own name — “The Lord our Righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6; 33:16). With his spotless garments on, we are as holy as God’s dear Son! Christ is our Sanctification. — Not only has his righteousness been imputed to us for justification, it has been imparted to us in sanctification by the grace of God. He is that holiness in us without which no man shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14). In the new birth, God gave us a holy nature. And that nature is Christ. Our sanctification in Christ is threefold. We were set apart in him by eternal election, declared to be holy in him by redemption, and made holy by him in regeneration. Christ is our Redemption. — The word ‘redemption” means deliverance. Christ has delivered us from the penalty of sin by his death as our Substitute. He has delivered us from the dominion of sin by his almighty grace in conversion. And he shall deliver us from all the evil consequences of sin (the presence of sin, the being of sin, and death itself) by his power in resurrection glory at the last day. What shall we say to these things? “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord!”
“All Things” — (Romans 8:28) These two words are frequently used in the Word of God. “All things” is an all-inclusive, universal term. “All things” means “all things.” God does not say “all things” when he means “some things” or “most things.” When God says “all things” he means “all things.” This is what the Lord God tells us about “all things.” “All things are of God” (2 Corinthians 5:18). Everything that comes to pass in time was purposed and predestinated by God in eternity (Ephesians 1:11), and is brought to pass in time by God’s sovereign providence (Isaiah 45:7; Romans 11:36). There are no accidents in this world. There is no such thing as “luck,” “fate,” or “chance.” “All things are of God.” This is especially true with reference to salvation. “Salvation is of the Lord!” He planned it. He purchased it. He performs it. He preserves it. He perfects it. And he shall have all the praise for it! — “All things are for your sakes” (2 Corinthians 4:15). If you are a believer, one of God’s elect, everything that ever has been, is, or shall be has been ordained and is brought to pass by God for your eternal, spiritual good (Roman 8:28). Nothing has ever happened, shall happen, or can happen that will harm you (Proverbs 12:21). Divine predestination and sovereignty are the security of the believer’s soul. — “All things are yours” (1 Corinthians 3:21). All things are yours by God’s design. All things are yours to use for your own comfort and pleasure as you seek to glorify God in all things. All things are yours if you are Christ’s, for Christ is the Maker and Possessor of all things.
