Shout for Joy, Blest, Holy Nation Don Fortner

(Tune: #291 — Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah —87.87.87)

1.    Shout for joy, blest, holy nation, Jesus’ due to Jesus give! —

Bow to Him in adoration, and beneath His scepter live.

Crown your Savior! Crown your Savior! You who by His grace believe.

2.    God incarnate, by His bleeding, has redeemed your souls from hell!

Now He lives, (Oh, hear Him pleading!), that His saints with Him may dwell.

Crown your Savior! Crown your Savior! And His glorious triumph swell!

3.    On His Father’s throne now seated, to Him prayer and praise we bring.

When His purpose is completed, Heaven and earth shall own Him King!

Crown your Savior! Crown your Savior! And His endless honors sing!

4.    Woe to you who dare despise Him, and His rights as God deny!

All the traitors who refuse Him, shall beneath his vengeance die.

Crown your Savior! Crown your Savior! And you’ll reign with Him on high!

5.    All his subjects He shall gather, round His throne in bright array;

But His foes our King shall scatter, trembling, from His face away!

Crowned with glory, crowned with glory, Jesus shall His scepter sway!

Predestination Is Not Fatalism — Loraine Boettner

Fatalism implies that all events come to pass through the working of a blind, unintelligent, impersonal non-moral force which cannot be distinguished from physical necessity and carries us helplessly within its grasp as a mighty river carries a piece of wood. — Predestination teaches that from all eternity God has had one unified purpose which he is bringing to perfection through this world order of events. — The power of God is that ability and strength whereby he is able to bring to pass whatsoever he pleases, whatsoever his infinite wisdom may direct, and whatsoever the infinite purity of his will may resolve.

Our Substitute, Our Savior, Our Sovereign

Hebrews 1:3

He who is our Substitute is our Savior. We are assured that his work as our Substitute and Savior is a gloriously effectual work because he is also the sovereign Monarch of the universe.

Our Substitute

The Lord Jesus Christ, who is God almighty, is the sinner’s Substitute. He is the Daysman, the Surety, the Representative, the Mediator, the Substitute by whose obedience sinners are reconciled to God, without whom we could never be accepted of God. The key to understanding the Word of God is to understand the gospel doctrine of substitution. Christ stood before God as the Substitute for his elect before the world began as the Lamb slain (Revelation 13:8), as our Mediator (Ephesians 1:3), and as our Covenant Surety (2 Timothy 1:9). He lived in obedience to God as our Substitute in this world to fulfil all righteousness on our behalf (Romans 5:19). He died under the wrath of God as the Substitute, in the place of his people, upon the cross (Galatians 3:13; 2 Corinthians 5:21). He intercedes for us today as an advocate in heaven (1 John 2:1-2), as our Substitute before the throne of grace. And he will stand before God in the last day as our Substitute at the bar of justice, as the ground of our eternal salvation (Jeremiah 23:6). If Jesus Christ is indeed God (And he is!), then all that he has undertaken to do as our Substitute in redemption, justification, sanctification, and glorification must be effectually and completely accomplished by his own omnipotent arm. Those people he came to save must be saved. — “He shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). — “He shall not fail” (Isaiah 42:4).

Our Savior

This Jesus, the Christ of the Bible, who is almighty God, is the Savior of his people. Christ alone is our Savior. He is our complete salvation (1 Corinthians 1:30; Colossians 2:10). And he is an effectual Savior. He worked out a perfect righteousness for us by his life of obedience to God in this world. He fully satisfied the justice of God for us in his death upon the cursed tree. He gave us life by the sovereign power of his Spirit in regeneration. He keeps us in life by his grace. And we are complete in him, lacking nothing!

Our Sovereign

This Jesus, who is God, in order that he might save his people, is the sovereign monarch of the universe (John 17:2). He is the rightful Monarch of the universe as God, by virtue of his eternal divinity. And he has won the right of monarchy as our God-man Mediator, by virtue of his obedience to the Father in his great work of redemption (Acts 5:31; Romans 14:9; Philippians 2:8-11). Because our Lord Jesus Christ is the absolute, sovereign Monarch of the universe, failure with him is an impossibility. He has power over all flesh. Therefore he has power to give eternal life to every sinner chosen by the Father and given to him in the covenant of grace. He has power to give eternal life to every sinner for whom he shed his precious blood, and he shall! — “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied!”

I Remember Sister Coleman

Psalm. 5:7

Multitudes today who profess to be Christians, lovers of God, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and promoters of righteousness, willfully absent themselves from the house of God and despise the blessed privilege of public worship. They justify their actions and excuse their disobedience by pointing to personal responsibilities, inconveniences, or objectionable things connected with the local church. A person determined to walk in a course of disobedience never lacks for excuses to do so. But you will never find justification for neglecting the worship of God in Holy Scripture.

In Nehemiah's day, the children of Israel who had long been without the privileges of worship in the house of God, made a covenant and took an oath saying, “We will not forsake the house of our God” (Nehemiah 10:39). The Shunammite woman rode a donkey every sabbath day to hear God's prophet at Carmel, though her husband objected to it (2 Kings 4:23). In David's time, the saints of God “passed through the valley of Baca” to worship God at Zion (Psalm 84:6). In Daniel's day, the children of God ran to and fro “to increase knowledge,” to know more of the Lord God (Daniel 12:4). Zechariah tells us that in his days the inhabitants of one city went to another, saying, “Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord and to seek the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 8:21). Our Lord and his disciples went to considerable trouble and inconvenience to meet together and worship God (Mark 1:21; Luke 4:16). The Ethiopian Eunuch journeyed from Ethiopia to Jerusalem to worship God, seeking to know him of whom the prophets spoke (Acts 8:25).

I remember Sister Clemmie Coleman. She was a faithful member of Bible Baptist Church in Madisonville, Kentucky, until the Lord called her home. Until she was nearly 90, she worked every day, keeping other people’s children. I have visited the church in Madisonville many, many times, both as a guest preacher and to hear others preach. Until the Lord took her to Heaven, I was never in a worship service there when Mrs. Coleman was not in her seat, and in it early.

The last time we saw her, my wife commended her for her faithfulness in the house of God. Her response was something to this effect, “Well, I want to be here; and I know that I am responsible not only for everything I hear, but also for everything I had the opportunity to hear and didn’t.” Every time I hear someone half Mrs. Coleman’s age (or less) offer me some lame excuse for absenting themselves from the worship of God, I think of that dear lady (and many others I know like her) and say, “I understand.” Believe me, if you hear me say that to you, I do understand. We all do, in so far as we have the ability, exactly what we want to do.

Call it fanaticism if you choose, but I say without fear of contradiction that anyone who talks about being a Christian, who talks about worshipping God, who talks about being a believer, and yet willfully neglects the worship of God, ought to blush with shame for his obvious hypocrisy! All who know God in the experience of his grace delight in worshipping him. — “As for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
