God’s elect, like Jesse’s youngest boy, are usually the very last ones we think might be chosen, until the Lord God calls them by his grace. By his call, God says, “This is he!

`Midst Fiery Trials, Hellish Foes Don Fortner

(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear — CM)

1.    Sinners redeemed, God’s own elect,

(Most precious in His sight!)

Fear not, His hand shall well protect

His chosen, day and night!

2.    `Midst fiery trials, hellish foes,

And Satan’s roars and snares;

Your troubles Christ, your Savior, knows. —

On Him cast all your cares!

3.    Remember, all the saints of old

Pass’d through the fire to God.

This is the path, as we are told, —

The consecrated road.

4.    Go on, the prize is just in view,

The struggle can’t be long;

Almighty grace shall bring you through,

To join the ransom’d throng!

“Eternal Redemption” Hebrews 9:12

Pastor Gene Harmon

This passage of Holy Scripture plainly declares that Jesus Christ “obtained (past tense) eternal redemption” for someone.

1.    Who is it that obtained eternal redemption? — The writer of Hebrews is referring to Jesus Christ, the second Person of the blessed triune God (Galatians 4:4 - 5).

2.    Who did Jesus Christ obtain eternal redemption for? — “For us” His chosen people (Ephesians 1:3 - 7), God’s elect (Romans 8:32-33).

3.    How did Jesus Christ obtain eternal redemption for us? — “By his own blood,” by the supreme sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 1:3; 10:10-14).

4.    How do hell-deserving, spiritually dead sinners receive these God-honoring truths concerning eternal redemption? By the life-giving miracle of the new birth (John 3:3-8), by God’s sovereign grace through His gift of faith to us (Ephesians 2:8-9), when God calls His chosen people out of darkness under the preaching of His glorious gospel “to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 2:13 - 14).

Brethren, Jesus Christ obtained eternal redemption for us, for His chosen people. And when He entered “into the holy place, when He entered into heaven itself, there “to appear in the presence of God for us,” He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, denoting a finished work. That is positive proof that God accepted the perfect redeeming work of His darling Son. And the Scripture tells us that we were made to sit together “in heavenly places in Christ(Ephesians 2:6).

Salvation Is Not By Chance

Pastor Frank Tate

“As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.” (Romans 9:13). Of course the apostle Paul knew men would think that it is not fair that God would hate Esau. Fallen man thinks it is not fair that Esau was not given the chance to make a choice to be saved. Paul’s response in verse 20 is, “Who do you think you are to dispute with God?”

Rather than arguing with God, this verse should make us give thanks. We should give thanks that Jacob wasn’t given a chance to make a choice to be saved either. God saved hell-deserving Jacob by His grace. Jacob did not have a say in the matter. Jacob knew that his salvation was all of grace, without any works of his own.

Knowing that the Lord sovereignly saves whom He will never makes a believer fatalistic (think it doesn’t matter if we preach to or pray for the lost because God is going to save whom He will no matter what we do). Knowing that God is sovereign in salvation made Jacob pray that the same Savior who redeemed him would bless and redeem his grandchildren (Genesis 48:16).

Orderly Worship

Titus 1:5

Having apostolic authority to do so, Paul left Titus in Crete, to “set in order” things that were lacking in the churches and to oversee the ordination of gospel preachers among them. The Word of God does not lay down any distinct order of service for public worship that must be rigidly followed, and we must be careful to avoid mere religious ritualism and ceremonialism. Yet all things must be done decently and in order. We must do nothing without thoughtful prayer and preparation; and all that is done must be done for the glory of God. In the New Testament we see five things which are essential to public worship. These five things should be regularly maintained in the services of every local church.

1.    Prayer — When we come together for worship, we should be led in united, public prayer (1 Timothy 2:1). That doesn’t mean everybody prays out loud! What could be more absurd? Rather, one man at a time leads the congregation in prayer.

2.    Reading — Every assembly for public worship should give attention to the public reading of Holy Scripture (1 Timothy 4:13; Revelation 1:3; Acts 15:30-31; Luke 4:16). When the Scriptures are read in our worship services, the man reading should simply read the Word, with very little or no comment, emphasizing the supremacy of Holy Scripture as God’s Word to us. Leave the preaching to the preacher.

3.    Praise — United, public praise, congregational singing, is a blessed part of public worship (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16). Let our songs be songs of praise celebrating the persons, work, and glory of the Triune Jehovah. Let us ever sing about our God, not about ourselves. Praise is not waving your hands in the air, rolling your eyes toward the ceiling, and shaking your hips like barbarians doing a voodoo dance! Praise is speaking to one another about God and speaking to God in “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

4.    Preaching — The most important aspect of public worship is the preaching of the gospel (2 Timothy 4:1-2). The House of God is a preaching center. The local church is a sounding board for the gospel. It is not a religious social club, or a place of entertainment. In every true house of worship gospel preaching is supreme.

5.    Ordinances — We must regularly observe the ordinances of our Lord in public worship, that is, Believers’ Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, confessing our faith in and allegiance to our crucified Savior, remembering him who loved us and gave himself for us.

Every service of every local church should be a worship service. Whether the congregation is many or few, whether it is gathered on Sunday morning, Sunday night, or in the middle of the week, when God’s people gather in public assembly, they ought to be led in the worship of God by faithful, well-prepared, gospel-preaching pastors. Each service of the church should include prayer, reading of Scripture, praise to God, and gospel preaching. And the services should frequently include the observance of our Lord’s ordinances.
