It is not possible to overstate anything revealed in Holy Scripture. When the Bible says “God has mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth,” that is what it means. When God says “Christ was made sin,” that is what he means. When the Book of God declares “We are made the righteousness of God in Christ,” that is what it means. — These blessed Gospel revelations cannot be overstated. Rather, they are only perverted when understated or altered to mean something else.

Christ is the Way, the Truth, the Life — Don Fortner

“A Figure of Him that was to Come”

Romans 5:14

In Genesis 3:22 the Lord God declares “Behold, the man is become as one of us.” What an astounding statement that is! What can it mean?

Trinity

When Moses wrote, “The Lord God said,” who did he have in mind? It is Jehovah-Elohim speaking; but he says, “The man has become as one of us.” One Person is speaking, but more than one person is represented. The Person speaking is Christ, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son of God, Jehovah-Elohim. He is speaking for the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. In that one sentence we have set before us the plurality of persons in the eternal Godhead, the eternal Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the preexistence of our Savior before his incarnation. But what do these words mean? — “The man is become as one of us.”

Adam a Type

This is also a declaration of the fact that Adam was a type and picture of Christ our Substitute, as God the Holy Ghost declares, our father Adam was “the figure of him that was to come.” Nowhere do we see the love of Christ for his Church set forth so fully as in the case of Adam’s love for Eve. The popular notion is that Eve beguiled Adam. Eve did nothing of the kind. Satan beguiled her, allured her by deception into sin and rebellion against God; but the Spirit of God tells us plainly that “Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression” (1 Timothy 2:14).

Adam was not deceived to any degree, neither by the devil nor by his wife. He knew exactly what he was doing, and sinned with his eyes wide open. He saw his cherished wife, Eve, in the depths of her guilt and shame; and out of nothing but love for her, before he would be parted from her, he would be damned with her. He cleaved to his wife, for they were one flesh. And into ruin he plunged himself for her sake. In all this he was the figure of our blessed Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who was to come, for so it was with our dear blessed Redeemer. Moved by nothing but his love for us, before he would be parted from us, he plunged himself into our sin, our guilt, and our death, that he might save us from everlasting ruin (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Made Like Christ

“Behold, the man is become as one of us.” — This is also a declaration of Adam’s present state and condition, and of ours in Christ. Though fallen by nature, we are now, as Adam was, restored by grace. What God here says of Adam is true of every believer. Though in Adam we fell, in Christ we are restored, just like Adam was by the sacrifice of the Lamb of God and call of omnipotent grace.

Like Adam, we have been clothed with Christ’s righteousness, and we are “made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21), made “righteous, even as he is righteous” (1 John 3:7; Jeremiah 23:6; 33:16). Like Adam, being renewed by grace, we are now created in the image of Christ, conformed to him, created new by the grace of God “in righteousness and true holiness” (Ephesians 4:24), made “partakers of the Divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). Like Adam, having been called from darkness to light in Christ, we now know both good and evil. We know both the goodness of God and the evil of our own hearts. Like Adam, we have become as one of the Holy Trinity, we have become like Christ our Mediator. — “And as he is so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).

“Power Belongeth unto God”

Psalm 62:11

If, in anyway, we limit God’s sovereignty and omnipotence, we deny his essential Divinity and destroy every foundation of true faith in him. Throughout the Scriptures God’s sovereign omnipotence is set before us as a matter of greatest praise and adoration, ever encouraging faith in him (1 Chronicles 29:10-11; Jeremiah 32:17-18; Daniel 4:35).

God’s saints on earth, and all the saints and angels of heaven, when they ascribe glory to God, praise him for his omnipotence as God (Revelation 4:10-11; 5:13; 7:11-12; 19:5-6). Omnipotence means that God has all power over all things. Sovereignty is the exercise of that power. By this sovereign omnipotence, God declares his greatness, calls for all men to bow before him, and encourages the faith of his elect in him (Isaiah 46:9-13). Indeed, God has placed the stamp of omnipotence on all that he does.

·      God created the world by omnipotent power (Genesis 1:1-3; Hebrews 11:3).

·      God’s omnipotence sustains, provides for, and rules the world and all things in it (Job 9:4-12; 26:7-8; 38: 6-12, 25-27).

·      God’s omnipotence is revealed in the redemption of sinners by Christ. It is seen in the things leading up to and in the completion of Christ’s redemptive work — His Incarnation (Luke 1:35-37) — His Miracles (Luke 9:43) — His Death (John 10:17-18, 19-30; Acts 2:23) — Resurrection (Romans1:4).

·      It is by the omnipotence and irresistible power of God’s grace that sinners are born-again, converted and given faith in Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6-7; Ephesians 1:19).

·      The perseverance of every believer in grace and faith is by God’s omnipotence (1 Peter 1:5).

·      And in the last day God shall raise the dead by his sovereign, omnipotent power (Matthew 25:32-46; John 5:28-29).

This omnipotent, almighty God is our God. He is a God of unlimited power. He is a Savior of unlimited ability. He is uncontrolled and uncontrollable. He always does exactly what he wills to do. He always does all his pleasure. He cannot be restrained, frustrated, or defeated. And his will and pleasure is the eternal salvation of all his elect (Isaiah 53:10-11). This Almighty God is God worthy of implicit faith. Oh, may he give us grace to trust him!
