“The Banqueting House” — Don Fortner “He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” Song of Solomon 2:4 (Tune: #188 — I Love Thy Kingdom Lord —SM)
1. Oh, let us sing the praise Of Christ the Prince of Peace, Who brings us to His house, and says, “Come feast upon My grace!”
2. His love prepared the feast. His blood He gives for wine! — O matchless grace! — His welcome guests Are helpless souls like mine!
3. Love’s banner He’s unfurled; O Holy Spirit bring Our souls away from this vain world, To feast with Christ our King!
“Thou hast Given Great Occasion to the Enemies Of the Lord to Blaspheme.” 2 Samuel 12:14
How sad! What terrible consequences followed David’s transgression. Our lives affect a lot of people and a lot of things. None of us lives unto himself. Everything we say and everything we do affects other people. Our companions, our children, our brethren, our neighbors, our friends, and our enemies are watching us. What we say and do does affect them! The scandalous lives of people who profess faith in Christ, and the scandalous actions of people who possess faith in Christ are matters of grave concern, because they give people occasion to blaspheme the name of our God. The more prominent and influential a person is, the more severe the consequences of his sin are (Romans 2:23-24). Lot was a righteous man; but he led his family to destruction! Though God did not punish David for his sin personally (His sin was punished in Christ!), he did chasten him publicly. He did so to vindicate his honor and show his displeasure with David’s sin. Some of the terrible consequences of David’s sin are plainly recorded for our learning and admonition. — Because of David’s transgression, the name of the Lord was blasphemed (12:14). — The child of his lust was killed (12:18). — The sword never departed from his house (12:10). — And David reaped the consequences of his sin in his children (12:11-12; 16:22). Amnon learned to live by his lusts by watching his father gratify his own lusts. Absalom learned to despise his father by his father’s deeds. Ahithophel learned to betray his trusted friend by David’s deeds. “Be sure, your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). You cannot take fire to your bosom and not get burned. You cannot sin against God and get by. Your sin and mine has its consequences upon the name of God, the family of God, and all who are under our influence. And our influence is always either positive or negative. It is never neutral. A crooked stick casts a crooked shadow. A straight stick casts a straight shadow.

“The Lord hath Put Away thy Sin” 2 Samuel 12:13
The Lord our God is merciful and gracious to forgive sin (Psalm 103:8-14). David was so overwhelmed by the goodness and grace of God in forgiving his sin that when he wrote about it he could not extol the grace of God enough (Psalms 32 and 51). It is still true, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). “Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity?” (Micah 7:18). Our God is God “who delighteth in mercy!” What a picture we have in David of God’s mercy in forgiving sin. This is what God does for sinners. — He forgives them!
“The Forgiveness of Sins” Ephesians 1:7
The result of redemption is “the forgiveness of sins.” Wherever there is redemption through the precious blood of Christ there is the forgiveness of sins. You cannot have one without the other. Forgiveness was purchased for us by the blood of Christ. Forgiveness is given to us upon the merit of his blood atonement. Forgiveness is ours in exactly the same sense that it is Christ’s. He was released from the load and from the charge of sin when he had fully paid the debt of sin, and so are we (1 Peter 4:1; 1 John 4:17).
All Sin God has forgiven us of all past sins. He has forgiven us of all present sins. He has forgiven us of all future sins. He has removed them from us (Psalm 103:12). He cast them into the depths of the sea. He blotted them out (Isaiah 43:25). He will not impute them to us (Romans 4:8). He has purged them away! He will not remember them against us again forever! He will never deal with us any the less graciously because of our sins. Robert Hawker rightly observed, “So infinitely extensive in its efficacy is redemption from sin in all its consequences that it reacheth through all time, and through all eternity. And so infinitely great in its power, that ‘it cleanseth from all sin’ (1 John 1:7).”
Mercy’s Great Deed Mercy’s great deed is the blessed forgiveness of sin. It is the glory of grace to forgive sin. It is the majesty of mercy to forgive sin. It is the character of God to forgive iniquity and transgression and sin (Exodus 34:5-7). This is an act of God alone. He alone can forgive sin. And his forgiveness is the only One whose forgiveness we need, desire, and must have for the salvation of our souls and the peace of our troubled consciences (Psalm 130:3-4). What a marvelous thing this is! The God against whom we have sinned, whose name we have blasphemed, whose law we have broken, the God whose grace we have despised is a God who forgives sin. He says, “I, even I am he that blotteth out thy transgressions.” And God’s forgiveness of our sins is as constant as it is surprising. Certainly, it was done once, with finality, when Christ died as our Substitute. But it is experienced constantly as God speaks peace to the hearts of those who confess their sins (1 John 1:9). This forgiveness of sin is the complete, effectual, permanent forgiveness of all the sins of all who trust Christ. God charged our sins upon his Son, Jesus Christ, and they shall never be charged upon us (Romans 4:8).
“I ask no sign, no vision, no evidence without, nor feeling within on which to rest my confidence. God has given us his Word and confirmed it in his blessed Son; and there my confidence, faith, and trust shall rest.” — Horatius Bonar
