Grace Baptist Church of Danville

April 5, 2015

Let us ever seek grace to live by the rule of the gospel we preach, honoring God in all things; but do not imagine that you can preach the gospel by the way you live. — You can only preach the gospel by declaring it.

Thy Kingdom Come Don Fortner

(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear —SM)

1.    When Christ His royal sceptre sways,

To bring His chosen home,

The newborn soul with fervor prays,

“O Lord, Thy Kingdom come!”

2.    Your righteousness, and peace, and joy

You freely give to some;

And when Your foes You have destroyed,

Then shall Thy Kingdom come.

3.    Display Your pow’r, reveal Your grace,

And bring Your ransomed home!

Your Gospel send to every place: —

Thus shall Thy Kingdom come!

4.    Your scattered sheep must be brought nigh,

Though far from You we’ve roam!

Reign, mighty Lord, Your subjects cry,

And let Thy Kingdom come!

5.    In us and for us, Savior reign,

Till we arrive at home!

With joyful hope, we cry again —

O Lord, Thy Kingdom come!

“The Word Preached did not Profit Them”

Hebrews 4:2

The word preached did not profit them.” — What a sad statement! Here are some suggestions that, I hope, may help you to hear the Gospel with spiritual profit. — Gospel preaching is the ordinance of God, the means appointed by Christ himself for the saving of his people and the building of his Kingdom among men. This is the method by which God the Holy Ghost does his work in the souls of men. Consider these facts, and you will heed what I have to say here, though what you read may reprove you, and though the reproof may be painful.

1.    Never come to the house of God to gratify your religious curiosity. When we come to the house of God, let us come seeking to know Christ, to hear of Christ, to learn of Christ, and to worship Christ. It is not an honorable thing, but a contemptible thing to sit around and discuss endless questions about nothing, ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth ((2 Timothy 3:5-7). Flee, flee religious curiosity, as you would flee the plague! Come to the house of God with humility, ready to receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your soul.

2.    Listen carefully, attentively, to the message God sends his servant to deliver to your soul. Give earnest heed to the things that are spoken from the Word of God. Take great care to hear what God has to say to you. When God descended on Mt. Sinai in terrible majesty, to give his law, the children of Israel sat up and paid attention to his servant Moses! If they were earnest in hearing the thunderings, threatenings, and terrors of the law, how gladly sinners ought to sit up and anxiously hear the preacher of the Gospel, as he proclaims the glad tidings of free grace in Christ!

3.    Do not allow Satan, or any by whom he is served, to prejudice your mind against faithful men, sent of God to preach the Gospel to you. Beware of entertaining any dislike of those the Holy Ghost has made overseers over you. If a man faithfully preaches the Gospel, receive him like the Galatians received Paul, before the Judaizers corrupted them, as an angel of God (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

4.    Be careful not to depend too much on a preacher, or think more highly of him than you ought to think. God’s servants are instruments in his hands, no more and no less, just instruments by which God works in his vineyard. (1 Corinthians 3:5-9, 21-23).

5.    Always seek grace from God to personally apply the message to your own heart and life. Always presume that the message was prepared with you in mind, and spoken to you alone. We are all terribly inclined to look across the room and behold a little splinter in our brother’s eye, rather than deal with the two by four in our own.

6.    If you would receive a blessing from the Lord, when you hear his Gospel preached, you should do something before the sermon, during the sermon, and after the sermon. — Before the sermon, set things in order in your life so that you come to the house of God awake and alert; and pray for God’s blessing upon the preaching of the Gospel. — During the sermon, listen attentively, constantly praying for God to speak to your heart, for Christ’s sake. — After the sermon, discuss the message with one another, with your family, and ask God to plant the Seed sown in your own heart and in the hearts of others, for their everlasting good and his great glory (2 Thessalonians 3:1; Ephesians 6:18-19).

He That Does Not Backbite

Pastor Clay Curtis

He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.” (Psalm 15:3)

This is the answer when the question is asked, “Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?” (Psalm 15:1). It is a reasonable question considering Psalm 14 says, “The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Psalm 14:2-3) Christ Jesus is the only one who ever walked this earth who was neighbor to us. He did not slander anyone. God the Son did not work evil toward us, only righteousness. He did not scorn his neighbor. Christ Jesus truly is the one the Good Samaritan typifies. (Luke 10:25-36) Christ is the only one who ever “loved the Lord his God with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his strength, and with all his mind; and his neighbor as himself.” Like the man in the parable, God’s elect fell in our father Adam. We were stripped of all righteousness and left in the ditch of depravity. Like the priest and the Levite, the law and religion would not help us out of our condition. But Christ, like the despised Samaritan, had compassion on us from eternity. He came and bound up our wounds, pouring in the oil of the Holy Spirit and the wine of his blood. Christ himself is our Rest like the wounded man was put on the beast so he could rest. The Head of the church brings his weak child to his church and continues to take care of us through his gospel. As his preachers care for his people through the gospel, Christ provides for them. Christ is the Neighbor, who alone has really shown mercy to those who are truly in need.

When Christ has done this work for us, he bridles our fleshly backbiting tongue and gives us a new heart. Now, by God’s grace, we love him who was Neighbor to us, who showed us mercy. In a much smaller way, we follow his steps by loving our brethren, as well as other needy sinners who are yet fallen and robbed in the ditch of depravity. We show them mercy by speaking the truth of Christ instead of backbiting them; we show them mercy by providing whatever they need to help them get under the sound of the gospel of Christ rather than doing evil to them; we love them by taking them up when they fall rather than taking up a reproach of scorn against them. All of this is because Christ was Neighbor to us.
