Grace Baptist Church of Danville

January 25, 2015

God’s will, God’s ways, and God’s works are always right, righteous, just, and good. In all things, it is ours to bow to him, not to question him, but to trust his wisdom, goodness, and grace.

“Thy Will Be Done.” Don Fortner

(Tune: #52 — Majestic Sweetness —CM)

1.    Father, I know Your ways are just,

Although to me unknown.

O, grant me grace Your love to trust.

And cry, “Thy will be done.”

2.    If You should hedge with thorns my path,

When pleasant things are gone,

O give me grace to say in faith,

“My God, ‘Thy will be done.’”

3.    Although Your steps I cannot trace,

Your sov’reignty I’ll own;

And as enabled by Your grace,

I’ll cry, “Thy will be done.”

4.    O give me grace to passive lie

Before Your gracious throne,

Concerning everything to cry.

“My God, ‘Thy will be done.’”

 “The Manifold Wisdom of God”

Salvation by the Crucified God

Galatians 4:4-6

The thrice holy God, by infinite wisdom and grace, determined to procure the salvation of his elect by the most unlikely means imaginable, by the humiliation and death of his own dear Son. Salvation by the crucified God displays “the manifold wisdom of God” which astonishes the very angels of heaven. How it ought to astonish us!

Strength in Weakness

When Christ came to accomplish his great work of redemption, he did not appear in greatness, power, and glory. He emptied himself, made himself of no reputation, and appeared in weakness, poverty, and shame (2 Corinthians 8:9; Galatians 4:4-6; Philippians 2:6-8).

God’s strength is made perfect in weakness. And God determined that Christ’s weakness and humiliation be the means by which he would overthrow his enemies and redeem his people. Our Lord Jesus Christ overcame the tempter’s power in the wilderness after he had fasted forty days and forty nights. The mighty Captain of our Salvation resisted Satan’s assaults in the Garden, when his own heart was overwhelmed with sorrow. The woman’s Seed crushed the serpent’s head in death. And God our Savior snatched us from the pit of destruction by going down to the pit of death for us!

God has brought strength out of weakness, greatness out of reproach, and glory out of ignominy. Christ’s shame, reproach, and ignominious death as the sinner’s Substitute is the only means by which sinners can be raised from the depths of sin and death to the heights of righteousness and eternal life!

Exaltation by Humiliation

The wisdom of God made Christ’s humiliation the means of our exaltation. Divine wisdom made Christ’s descent from heaven the means of our ascending to heaven. The wisdom of God made life the fruit of his death. The death of Christ was the only means by which we could have eternal life. The death of One who is God is the only means by which we could have life in God. Our acceptance into God’s favor arises out of Christ’s dying under God’s wrath. Our blessing arises out of Christ’s being made a curse for us. Our innocence arises from Christ’s being made our guiltiness. Our righteousness arises from Christ’s being made sin for us! As sin reigned unto death over God’s own dear Son, grace reigns unto eternal life to us by the death of God’s Son.

God’s Gospel

The gospel we preach, the message of God’s free and sovereign grace flowing freely to chosen sinners through the accomplished redemption of Christ, is truly God’s gospel. It reveals the glory of God's grace and mercy and the honor of his justice and holiness, proclaiming that God is just, and yet the justifier of all who trust Christ. — “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound!”

“Call His Name Jesus”

Matthew 1:21

Pastor Frank Hall

The name of Jesus sweetens every bitter trial and illuminates every sad and lonesome path, “for he shall save his people from their sins.” Glorious Jesus, your name is the cure for sin sick hearts, the resting place for the weary pilgrims of Zion, and heavenly manna for every Israelite wandering through this barren wilderness of darkness and sin. The name of Jesus, “the same yesterday, and today, and forever,” brings glad tidings of peace and salvation to every grief stricken Christian who has nowhere else to turn for help, “for he shall save his people from their sins.” This name, “which is above every name,” calms the troubled sea within, dispels the darkness of doubt and despair, and soothes the trembling heart of every man, woman, and child who knows themselves to be the “chief of sinners,” and less than the least of all God’s saints, “for he shall save his people from their sins.”

Taken with Christ

Thomas Brooks

My heart is taken with Christ. It is raised and ravished with his love. My soul is burning, my soul is beating towards Christ. Oh, none but Christ, none but Christ! I cannot live in myself. I cannot live in my duties. I cannot live in external privileges. I cannot live in outward mercies. I cannot live in common providences. I can only live in Christ, who is my life, my love, my joy, my crown, my all in all. Oh, the hearing of Christ affects me, the seeing of Christ affects me, the taste of Christ affects me, the glimmerings of Christ affect me! The more I come to know him in his natures, in his names, in his offices, in his discoveries, in his appearances, in his beauties, the more I find my heart and affections to prize Christ, to run after Christ, to be affected with Christ, and to be wonderfully endeared to Christ. Oh, God forbid that my heart should be affected or taken with anything in comparison of Christ. The more I know him, the more I like him. The more I know him, the more I love him. The more I know him, the more I desire him. The more I know him, the more my heart is knit unto him. His beauty is taking. His love is ravishing. His goodness is drawing. His manifestations are enticing. And his person is enamoring. His lovely looks please me. His pleasant voice delights me. His precious Spirit comforts me. His holy Word rules me. — And these things make Christ to be a heaven unto me.
