Christ Jesus Crucified Don Fortner

(Tune: #477 — When I Can Read My Title Clear  —CM)

1.    Where Satan holds his cruel seat,

And guilt still swells its tide,

To trembling souls this news is sweet —

Christ Jesus crucified!

2.    Angels adore with sweet surprise,

The Friend who loved and died;

Justice beholds the sacrifice, —

Christ Jesus crucified!

3.    You heralds, go! — His death proclaim,

And know no theme beside;

Preach to the poor, the blind, the lame,

Christ Jesus crucified!

4.    My soul survey that precious blood,

Which cleanses when applied:

And let your trust be in your God, —

Christ Jesus crucified!

5.    Let saints below and saints above

Behold His wounded side:

This is our Savior, God of love, —

Christ Jesus crucified.

 “The Manifold Wisdom of God”

Redemption — The Revelation of God’s Glory

Ephesians 3:10 — Isaiah 43:21

The redemption that is in Christ Jesus is redemption that glorifies God in all his attributes. — Here is the manifold wisdom of God. He found a way to redeem and save his people that would exalt, magnify, and glorify every attribute of his holy Being (Psalm 85:7-13).

Holiness

Our redemption by Christ glorifies the holiness of God. God cannot compromise his holiness. He cannot save sinners at the expense of holiness. But never was the holiness of God more fully revealed than it was when God found sin upon his own dear Son. When God found sin upon his Son, he tormented him, forsook him, and slew him!

Truth

Our redemption by Christ glorifies the truth of God: the truth of his threats (Ezekiel 18:20) and the truth of his promises (Isaiah 53:1-12). Heaven and earth will pass away before one word of God falls to the ground. Indeed, his own beloved Son will be slain before one jot or tittle of his Word shall fail. Perhaps this is the meaning of that text which says, — “Thou hast magnified thy Word above all thy name” (Psalm 138:2).

Righteousness

The redemption of our souls by the blood of Christ glorifies the righteousness and justice of God (Romans 3:24-26). The Lord our God is so strictly and immutably just that he will not save the people he loves without the satisfaction of his law and justice. And God is so strictly and immutably just that he would not spare his own dear Son when he took our sins upon himself and became the sinner’s Substitute. God would not release his Son of one debt, spare his Son one requirement, or relieve his Son of one obligation. Justice must be satisfied, though it cost God his Son, and cost his Son his life by the extraordinary, indescribably painful, shameful death of the cross.

Power

The accomplishment of redemption by Christ glorifies the great power of God, too. Every aspect of redemption reveals the power of God. God’s great power in creation and providence fades in comparison with the power of God set forth in our redemption. What great, inconceivable power is revealed in the Person of our Redeemer! Who can describe that power which unites God and man in one glorious Person, without humanizing God or deifying man? The power of God appears gloriously in the actual work of redemption by Christ (John 12:31-32; Colossians 2:14-15). And the power of God is revealed in the application of redemption to God’s elect, our actual deliverance from sin and death by the Spirit of God in regeneration (Ephesians 1:19), overcoming the opposition of Satan, overcoming the opposition of our wills, and overcoming the power of death!

Love

And our redemption by Christ shows, as nothing else can, the praise of the glory of God’s mercy, love, and grace (1 John 3:1). The great God of heaven and earth so loves sinners who fully deserve his wrath that he found a way both to forgive our sins and make us the sons of God! He so loves sinful man that he has given fallen man a gift greater than he ever bestowed upon all the holy angels. — God gave us his Son (2 Corinthians 9:15)! God gave his Son for us! God gives his Son to us! God freely gives us all things with his Son!

Faith Looks to Christ

Pastor Frank Tate

Faith looks to Christ alone for all of salvation.  Faith does not look to experience to see how my experience compares to others.  Faith looks to Christ.  Faith does not look for evidences that would prove my salvation.  Faith looks to Christ.  The only evidence of salvation faith needs to see is Christ.  Faith does not look to our actions (i.e. if I do this, I must be saved, or if I don’t do this I must be saved).  Faith looks to Christ, to His doing and dying for me.  Faith does not try to discern why God is doing what He is doing.  Faith looks to Christ and trusts that our God is doing “according to His will in the armies of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth” (Daniel 4:35) and that whatever God is doing, “He hath done all things well” (Mark 7:37).

The Company of Two Armies (Song of Solomon 6:13)

J. C. Philpot

Are you not often a mystery to yourself? Warm one moment, cold the next; abasing yourself one half-hour, exalting yourself the following; loving the world, full of it, steeped up to your lips in it today; crying, groaning, and sighing for a sweet manifestation of the love of God tomorrow; brought down to nothingness, covered with shame and confusion, on your knees before you leave your room; filled with pride and self-importance before you have got down stairs; despising the world, and willing to give it all up for one taste of the love of Jesus when in solitude; trying to grasp it with both hands when in business. What a mystery are you! Touched by love, and stung with enmity; possessing a little wisdom, and a great deal of folly; earthly-minded, and yet having the affections in heaven; pressing forward, and lagging behind; full of sloth, and yet taking the kingdom with violence! And thus the Spirit, by a process which we may feel but cannot adequately describe, leads us into the mystery of the two natures, that "company of two armies," perpetually struggling and striving against each other in the same bosom. So that one man cannot more differ from another than the same man differs from himself. But do not nature, sense, and reason contradict this? Do not the wise and prudent deny this? "There must be a progressive advance," they say, "in holiness; there must be a gradual amendment of our nature until at length all sin is rooted out, and we become as perfect as Christ." But the mystery of the kingdom of heaven is this, that our carnal mind undergoes no alteration, but maintains a perpetual war with grace: and thus, the deeper we sink in self-abasement under a sense of our vileness, the higher we rise in a knowledge of Christ; and the blacker we are in our own view, the more comely does Jesus appear.
