Grace Baptist Church of Danville

July 20, 2014

Do any ask, — “Don Fortner, what reason have you to expect that sin shall not have dominion over you, and that you shall live in holiness and true godliness in this world?” I answer without hesitation, I am not under the law, but under grace. — “I am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.”

Our Sovereign God Maintains His Universal ThroneDon Fortner

(Tune: #39 — This is My Father’s World — SMD)

1.     Our sov’reign God maintains His universal throne;

In heav’n, and earth, and hell He reigns, and makes His wonders known!

His counsels and decrees, firmer than mountains stand;

He will perform whate’er He please; and none can stay his hand!

2.     All things His will controls; and His all-wise decree

Has fixed the destinies of all in matchless sov’reignty. —

Jacob by grace He saved, and gives no reason why;

But Esau’s heart He left depraved. — And who shall dare reply?

3.     What if the Potter takes part of a lump of clay,

And for Himself a vessel makes and casts the rest away?

Who shall resist His will, or say, “What doest Thou?”

Jehovah is the Sov’reign still; and all to Him must bow!

4.     My soul, bow and adore the Lord in all His ways;

His sov’reignty none can explore; but I will trust His grace!

For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things:

To Whom be glory evermore! Amen! Amen! Amen!

“They shall be my people”

Jeremiah 24:7

Be sure you understand these five facts. Apart from them you cannot understand the Word of God or the works of God.

1.    There are some men and women in this world whom God has chosen to salvation from eternity, who must and shall be saved (John 15:16; Ephesians1:4-6; 2 Thessalonians 2:13).

There is a multitude, scattered among the fallen sons of Adam, in every age, in every nation, who must be saved. The number of God’s elect is so great that no man can calculate it, though it always appears as only a remnant at any given time. But the number is unalterably fixed by God. And all the elect must be saved. Nothing can prevent their salvation. God’s very Being demands it!

2.    The Lord Jesus Christ has made atonement for the sins of God’s elect and redeemed them from the curse of the law by his own precious blood (Galatians 3:13-14).

Contrary to popular opinion, Christ did not die for all men. He refused to even pray for all men (John 17:9, 20). All his work was and is for his elect alone. The death of Christ was for a particular people (Isaiah 53:8; John 10:11) as their Substitute. And his death is an effectual atonement for their sins (Hebrews 9:12; Ephesians 1:6) for the satisfaction of justice on their behalf.

3.    All God’s elect, having been redeemed by the blood of Christ, shall be called from death to life by the irresistible power and grace of God the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:13-14; Psalms 65:4; 110:3).

Repentance toward God, faith in Christ, and eternal life are the results of the Spirit’s call. These are things effectually wrought in God’s elect (not offered to them) by his almighty grace.

4.    The means by which God’s elect are born again, called, and given faith in Christ is the preaching of the gospel (Romans 10:17; Hebrews 4:12; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23-25).

The Word of God is crystal clear. — “It pleased God, by the foolishness of preaching, to save them that believe.” The triune God has ordained the salvation of his elect by “the sanctification of the Spirit” (by the regenerating work of God the Holy Spirit) through the “belief of the truth.” Salvation is brought to chosen, redeemed sinners by the sovereign, irresistible work of God the Holy Ghost through the instrumentality of gospel preaching.

5.    And there is a specific day appointed by God in which each of his elect will be called to life and faith in Christ by the gospel (Psalm 110:3; Ezekiel 16:6-8).

God will see to it that the sinner he has chosen will be in the place he has ordained, with his heart thoroughly prepared to receive the gospel, at the appointed “time of love.” And he will send his Word to that sinner by a preacher in the irresistible power and grace of the Holy Spirit.

“Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth.”

Psalm 39:5

Pastor Clay Curtis

Hold up your hand. Note the space across your four fingers. That is a handbreadth. God has made your days as short as your four fingers are broad. If you are a young person then that may not have much impact on you. While young we anticipate many things for which we must wait. It makes time seem to pass slowly. But think of the summer break, in between school classes, when you want time to last forever. In the blink of an eye summer is over. Your life is that summer break. In a moment, your life will be over — “and after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9: 27).

Therefore, God tells you to take advantage of the time. (Ephesians 5: 16) Take advantage of the time by seriously seeking the truth of God’s salvation for sinners which is only by the doing and dying of Christ Jesus the Lord. The only way God will receive you is if you confess to God that you are a sinner deserving of God’s eternal wrath, turn from looking to you and your works, and believe Christ his Son has done everything necessary to justify you from your sins, to make you the righteousness of God, so that Christ is your only acceptance with holy God.

Does the thought cross your mind that these are things that you can put off till another day? Be sure you understand. Time is so short — your time is so short — that God commands you not even to depend upon tomorrow. God says, “Now, is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6: 2).

God speaks of an hour when there shall be a great earthquake, when the sun shall become black, when the moon shall become red as blood, when the stars shall fall from heaven, when the heavens shall depart like a scroll, when every mountain and island shall be moved out of their places. God tells us the fear that will befall every person who is not resting in Christ in that day. He says when that time comes the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, every bound man and every free man, shall hide themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains. They shall say to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” (Revelation 6: 12-17).

What if this hour is that appointed time? Does Christ know you? Does Christ know you so as to represent you faultless to that Judge who will by no means clear the guilty? If not, then do not waste another second. Hear the word of the Lord. Know how open God’s arms are. God says, “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” (Isaiah 55: 6-8)

The simple truth is: heed this word of God and you shall be saved; ignore this word of God and you shall be eternally and justly damned for all eternity! If you heed this word no one receives glory but God; if you ignore this word no one receives blame but you. Time is of the essence. Will you waste the precious seconds God has given you? No man can answer that question but you.
