Grace Baptist Church of Danville

May 18, 2014

No greater blessing of God can be bestowed upon any community or congregation than the gift of a faithful pastor, a gospel preacher, a man given according to God’s own heart, to “feed you with knowledge and understanding.” No greater curse can befall a people than for God to remove his prophet from them and send them no other.

Blest Spirit, Own this Sacred Hour Don Fortner

(Tune: #52 — Majestic Sweetness — CM)

  1. Blest Spirit, own this sacred hour; enflame the preacher’s heart;

Let every hearer feel Your power, ere from Your house we part!

 o

  1. Direct Your arrows to the souls of unconverted men;

And, while Your servant truth unfolds, may some be born again!

  1. O give Your saints a foretaste sweet of their eternal rest;

Each seeking soul be pleased to meet, and make each mourner blest!

The Preaching of the Word

1 Peter 1:25

Pastor Darvin Pruitt

Someone said the word of God is like a large puzzle that is made up of a lot of pieces. Each piece is significant but only as it is connected to the whole. It is not until the pieces are assembled together that we can see the image it was designed to display. There are exactly as many pieces in a scrambled puzzle as there is in a finished one. But there is a huge difference: One leaves you guessing and the other reveals the image.

Gospel preaching connects the pieces and reveals Christ in His glory. The Pharisees were experts on the pieces, but ignorant of Christ. Most preachers and Bible teachers in our day are the same. Like babies playing with the pieces, they try to force things to fit which were never designed to be joined. Those who preach, but do not preach Christ, do not preach the gospel and have no understanding of the Word of God. The gospel that brings about the regeneration of Gods saints is “the Word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Nothing Between

Nothing between my soul and the Savior.” — More than thirty years ago I sat in the home of a young preacher who had come up with the novel idea that no sinner can be saved until he has attained a certain degree of knowledge. He even argued that Peter, James, and John were lost until after the resurrection, because they had not yet arrived at a saving level of knowledge. After a good bit of discussion, I leaned over, looked the man in the eye, and said, “That is nothing but a subtle form of works salvation. The Bible never says, Know this doctrine and you shall be saved. Holy Scripture says, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.’ Anything you put between Christ and the sinner is works salvation. It does not matter whether it is experience, emotionalism, feelings, or knowledge, anything you put between Christ and the sinner is works; and it is just as damning as telling sinners that they must be circumcised to be saved.” Sadly, my friend quickly became an enraged foe and continues in his determined path of error. — I have said all that to say these two things…

1.    Preacher, put nothing between poor, lost sinners and Christ: no conditions, no prerequisites, no qualifications for the sinner to meet. Preach to sinners as sinners, urging them to trust the Lord Jesus.

2.    Sinner, put nothing between your soul and the Savior. There are no conditions, prerequisites, or qualifications for the sinner to meet before coming to Christ. — “All the fitness He requireth is to feel your need of Him. This He gives you, this He gives you. `Tis the Spirit’s rising beam!” — “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved!” — “He that believeth on the Son of God hath everlasting life!

Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility

Proverbs 29:1

I take a back seat to no one in declaring the gospel of God’s free and sovereign grace in Christ. Divine Sovereignty, Absolute Predestination, Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints are, in this house of worship, like salt and pepper on the table. We never have a meal without them. These are not things discussed only in the secrecy of the pastor’s study. They are openly declared from the pulpit without apology or abatement. Arminianism is a heretical form of evil that cannot be denounced in terms too severe. However, we must not distort the truth of God and the plain teachings of Holy Scripture, even in denouncing the heresies of Arminian, free-will, works religion.

            Many, attempting to guard the doctrine of God’s sovereignty, have denied the responsibility of men. They reason: — “If we preach that a sinner is responsible to repent, we must declare that he is able to repent. If we teach that sinners are responsible to believe on Christ, we must also teach that they are able to believe.” They deduce, in what appears to be a very reasonable manner, that responsibility implies ability The problem with this reasoning is that it attempts to mold the Word of God to a theological system.

            We must never try to make the Word of God fit into any human system of doctrine or theology. We must build our doctrine upon the plain statements of Holy Scripture. If the plain statements of Scripture contradict, or even destroy our theological system, so be it. If we have to throw away every doctrinal creed, every confession of faith, and every catechism that has ever been written by men in order to be faithful and true to the Word of God, then we will throw them away.

            This is one reason why, in this congregation, we do not require members to sign or agree to a confession of faith. Our creed, our confession of faith is the holy, inspired Word of God. If that seems to others to be too simple, too non-intellectual, or too pietistic, we can live with their disapproval. We bow to and build our doctrine upon the Word of God alone, even when it seems to contradict human reason and philosophy (Isaiah 8:20). — Here are two facts which simply cannot be denied or refuted…

1.    God almighty is absolutely sovereign in salvation. He has mercy on whom he will. He is gracious to whom he will be gracious. He saves whom he will (Romans 9:16).

2.    All men are responsible under God to walk in the light he has given them. The Lord God has fixed it so that those who perish in their sins, those who die in rebellion and unbelief are altogether without excuse (Romans 6:23).

            No one goes to hell by accident! Unbelief is not a passive thing. If you go to hell, you will have to scratch and claw your way there, fighting to your last breath against the light God has given you. Men and women do not go to hell because they are ignorant. People go to hell because they are rebels (Romans 1:18-20). “The wages of sin is death.” You earn that. “But the gift of God is eternal life.” That is his work.
