Universal atonement is the most hideous blasphemy ever to be spewed from the pit of darkness. Declaring the blood of Christ to be “an unholy thing,” that is to say “a thing common to all,” it tramples under the foot the precious blood of the Son of God and “does despite,” stands as a blasphemous insult, “unto the Spirit of grace” (Hebrews 10:29).

Bow to the Scepter of His Love Don Fortner

(Tune: #355 — From Every Stormy Wind that Blows —LM)

1.    Let chosen, ransomed sinners tell

The glories which in Jesus dwell;

His everlasting God-head sing,

And triumph in Him as our King!

2.    The heav’nly hosts adore His name,

Who bore His people’s guilt and shame;

All sacred beauties in Him meet,

Come, bow and worship at His feet!

3.    He’s lovely in the realms above;

His loveliness believers prove;

He’s lovely both in life and death,

O let His praise employ your breath.

4.    He reigns and shall forever reign. —

No more let ransom’d souls complain!

Bow to the scepter of His love;

And soon we’ll reign with Him above!

“They are they which testify of Me.”

John 5:39

Those for whom Christ in His plain Gospel is not enough, fancy themselves to be digging into the deeper things of the word of God. This is a delusion. You’ve altogether abandoned the word of God. “They are they which testify of Me, and you will not come to Me, that ye might have life.” The Bible is not a puzzle book full of dark riddles to be incessantly solved, one after the other. The riddles that men concoct from the Bible are never solved. The mystery of godliness is Christ, and the Bible is the Gospel of God, concerning His Son, Jesus Christ.                                                                    — Pastor Chris Cunningham

“Without Me ye can do nothing.”

John 15:5

We should apply these words of our Savior as broadly as possible to all things spiritual. — “Without me ye can do nothing!” “Without me ye” cannot believe. “Without me ye” cannot pray. “Without me ye” cannot watch. “Without me ye” cannot learn, know, or understand anything spiritual. “Without me ye” cannot know the meaning of my Word. “Without me ye” cannot preach. “Without me ye” cannot worship. “Without me ye” cannot hear me speak by the gospel.  “Without me ye” cannot persevere. “Without me ye” cannot withstand the devil. “Without me ye” cannot resist temptation. “Without me ye” cannot resist sin. “Without me ye” cannot stand. “Without me ye” cannot recover when fallen. “Without me ye can do nothing!” — “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy” (Romans 9:16).

            Outward circumstances, unaccompanied with inward grace, leave men just as they find them. Only Christ can change the heart. Only Christ can convert the sinner. Only Christ can save. . — “Without me ye can do nothing!

            As these words apply to all men, believers and unbelievers, they are especially applicable to preachers. Let every gospel preacher understand that the Lord Jesus is speaking to him, when he says, “Without me ye can do nothing.

“Without Me ye can do nothing.”

John 15:5

Pastor Henry Mahan

I suppose the most difficult thing any believer has to learn is that ‘Without Him we can do nothing.’ This is our creed but not our experience! We will never be effectually used for God’s true glory until it becomes our experience. God will never use men that are proud enough to think themselves necessary or capable. He will throw away the vessel which begins to boast in itself or allows others to boast in it. Whatever is our strength in the flesh is sure to become our weakness in the spirit — whether it be our intelligence, our morality, our length of service, our doctrine, our courage or whatever. Gideon feared the Midianites because of the small number of his soldiers, but the Lord said, ‘Your soldiers are yet too many for me.’ I wonder if we will ever become weak enough, empty enough, and ignorant enough for God to use us for His glory! The logic of the Lord is strange to the natural mind. ‘For when I am weak, then am I strong’ (2 Corinthians 12:10). ‘Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me’ (2 Corinthians 12:9). The Lord must go back to the seashore and raise up some fishermen. — We’ve all become masters and doctors, wise men in theology and great counselors. I disqualify myself for God’s use when I become qualified. My fine talents and lofty credentials become hindrances rather than helps. I thought to prepare myself for great things, only to learn that it was the rough voice in the wilderness He planned to use, not the polished preacher; it was the weak, impulsive shepherd with the sling He planned to use, not the mighty warrior with his armor of wit and arsenal of facts, doctrines, and learning. It may not be too late for some, but most are too proud to become expendable. If we don’t pour contempt on ourselves — God will!

How Sweet!

Pastor Tom Harding

How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm119:103)

David not only heard and read the Word of God, but he also feasted upon it in his heart and it was sweet and satisfying unto his soul. The Word of God is a bitter pill to the ungodly infidel, because he sees no beauty and glory in the revelation of Christ in it (Luke 24:27). However, to those who are called of God and enlightened by the Spirit, the Word of God is the heavenly manna (John 6:35) and the nourishment of the new man (2 Corinthians 5:17). Consider the following thoughts.

1). There is a sweetness in believing the gospel (1 Peter 2:7). — What a great privilege God has given to the sinner to trust the Lord Jesus Christ. “Blessed is the man that maketh the Lord His trust” (Psalm 84:12). The believer finds everything he needs freely, fully and eternally provided in the Lord (Philippians 4:19; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Colossians 2:9-10).

2). There is a sweetness in meditating upon Christ revealed in the Word. — “O how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day” (Psalms 119:97; 1:2). We love to think about the things that we love. To the believer, his Lord and Master is “altogether lovely.” The believer meditates upon the Word because we love Him; and then we love Him more because we meditate upon His word. (1 Timothy 4:13-16).

3). There is a sweetness in confessing Christ (Mark 16:16). — This is the believers delight, to publicly confess what Jesus Christ has done for us at Calvary, shedding His blood to put away our sin (1 John 1:7), also, to confess what Christ has done within us by making us trophies of His grace (1 Corinthians 15:10). The Biblical way to confess Christ as all your salvation is believer’s baptism (Acts 8:36-38).

4). There is a sweetness in proclaiming (preaching) the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 10:13-17). — What a great privilege and responsibility God has laid upon His church (2 Timothy 4:1-4). There is a special delight to those called, gifted, and sent of God to declare the message of sovereign grace (Ephesians 3:7-11). God has chosen by the preaching of the gospel to magnify Himself. God has chosen by the preaching of the gospel to call out His elect to Christ in faith (1 Corinthians 1:21). God has chosen by the preaching of the gospel, with the word of truth to feed His church (Acts 20:28; John 21:15).

Now think about this. — Is the gospel of Jesus Christ sweet unto me? Do the doctrines of the gospel offend me? Is the gospel a savor of life unto life or is it an obnoxious odor of death unto death (2 Corinthians 2:14-15). To those who are perishing Christ crucified is foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:17). However, to those that are saved, Christ is the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24).
