People who talk much about their “good works” really have very little to talk about; but they never lack for words to humbly tell us about them.

Jesus the Man, our God He Is Don Fortner

(Tune: #52 — Majestic Sweetness —CM)

1.    In Jesus Christ , most clear and bright,

The Father’s glories shine;

My faith beholds Him with delight,

And sings, “This God is mine!”

2.    Divine perfections all His own,

He is adored above,

Sitting upon the Father’s throne,

Proclaimed the God of love!

3.    He built the world. He conquered hell.

He ransomed me with blood.

He rules and governs all things well. —

He’s the eternal God!

4.    The image our God express, —

Jehovah! God the Son!

Jesus the Man, our God He is,

Our King and Priest enthroned!

“If I tell you that I grew up in Deer Park TX, my first car was a Plymouth Duster and I worked at Houston Independent School District, this is not a treatise on cities, cars or companies. It is all about me. The scriptures have some things to say about Heaven, Hell, Bethlehem and even heresy, but we need to understand that the Word of God concerns His Son Jesus Christ, all Him, only Him, always Him. Every other person, place, thing and subject are included, only as they relate to, reveal and glorify Him.”                                                   Pastor Chris Cunningham

“The Elect”

Colossians 3:12

There are some people described in the Book of God as “the elect.” They are a people who were chosen in Christ unto salvation before the world began and predestinated to be conformed the Lord Jesus in perfect holiness of being in resurrection glory. Obviously, if some are elect, others are not elect. God did not choose all; but, blessed be his name, he did choose some! And all the chosen, all the elect shall be saved with everlasting salvation in Christ.

Blessed Revelation

Election is a blessed revelation of the Gospel. It brings joy to the hearts of God’s people, inspires songs of praise, and causes all who experience it to consecrate themselves to God. With David, we sing, “Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple” (Psalm 65:4).

God’s choice and election of his people is not the result of something we do, but the cause of everything he does for us in Christ. In Psalm 65:4, election is spoken of as being in the present tense, though it was done before the world began, because this great work of grace is known and experienced in time. No one knows his election until he has been effectually called by the Holy Spirit to life and faith in Christ.

Chosen

Notice the progression of grace running through that verse of Scripture. “Blessed is the man whom thou choosest.” — That is election. God chose to save some in eternity; and those he chose to save in eternity he graciously cuts out from the rest of mankind in time, like a rancher at round up time cuts his own cattle out of the many roaming the open range. They were his cattle before. He simply rounds them up at the appointed time.

Caused

And causest to approach unto thee.” — This refers to irresistible, saving grace, the effectual call of God the Holy Spirit. Election both precedes and is the source and cause of this call. Look at the next line.

That he may dwell in thy courts.” — Sinners chosen and called by grace are caused to dwell, not to visit, but to dwell in the courts of Divine worship. Those who are chosen and called by the grace of God to life and faith in Christ are kept and preserved by that same grace unto eternal glory.

Satisfied

Moreover, election is the source and cause of the everlasting happiness and satisfaction of God’s saints in heaven. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.” — The house and temple of God in the Old Testament were typical of and representations of Christ and heaven, of God’s salvation and our everlasting nearness to and worship of him. This is true blessedness;  and  this blessedness, according to Holy Scripture, arises from and is effectually caused by God’s election of his people unto salvation in Christ before the world began.

No wonder David sang, “O the blessedness of the man whom thou choosest and causest to approach unto thee. No wonder God’s election was so much on his mind and heart. It was the thought of God’s election that made him leap and dance before the ark of God (2 Samuel 6:21). It was the fact of his election by God unto salvation and eternal life in Christ that sustained his heart and rejoiced his soul as he lay upon his deathbed. Indeed, this is a doctrine full of joy and comfort to every child of God. Let us bless and praise him for his free, electing love in Christ, the fountain of all past blessedness and the guarantee of all future blessedness for his people. God does everything in accordance with his electing love toward us, just for “the elect”.

Covered or Uncovered?

1 Corinthians 11:4-6

This portion of Holy Scripture does not necessitate that our women wear a veil during our worship services. I have many friends around the world who practice that custom; and I do not want to offend them. If a sister wants to wear a hat, a veil, a scarf, or any other form of head covering, I have no objection. I’m a southern boy. I like to see ladies in hats. — But do not insist that others do so; and do not try to find support for your practice in this passage.

1 Corinthians 11:4-6 must be understood and interpreted in the light of the customs of the day. In our day and in our culture, men do not kiss each other (1 Corinthians 16:20); and we do not normally wash other people’s feet (John 13:14-15). But we ought to practice the kindness, thoughtfulness, and tender care those things suggest.

In that day, it was a shameful thing for a woman to appear in public without a veil covering her head. If it was disgraceful for her to appear in public that way, it was certainly disgraceful for her to appear in the assembly of public worship in the house of God unveiled. For a woman to appear in the house of God with her head uncovered was to dishonor her head, that is to say, disgrace herself.

This, and this alone is Paul’s doctrine in 1 Corinthians 11:4-6: — When you come to the house of God, dress as ladies with modesty. Women who dress immodestly dishonor themselves. They shame themselves.

For those who insist that this passage requires a head-covering for women in public worship, the “covering” was truly a covering. It covered a woman’s upper body completely, except for her eyes. A fancy hat, a scarf, a lady’s handkerchief, or a doily sitting on top of your head is not a covering in the sense the word is used here.

Having said all that, I must acknowledge with great grief that it had to be said. Any time people press issues regarding such customs, Satan has won the day. When others see us observing strange customs, no matter how sincere we are in observing them, Satan has won the day. He has used us to keep them from hearing the message we preach —Jesus Christ crucified. How sad!
