Grace Baptist Church of Danville

Gossip is always evil: evil in spreading it, evil in receiving it, and evil in believing it. Only idle, irresponsible busy-bodies engage in the hellish practice. — “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29).

What Makes Mistaken Men Afraid? — Joseph Hart (1712-1768)

(Tune: #228 — My Faith has Found a Resting Place — CMD)

1.    What makes mistaken men afraid of sovereign grace to preach?

The reason is, if truth be said, because they are so rich.

Why so offensive in their eyes does God’s election seem?

Because they think themselves so wise that they have chosen Him.

2.    Of perseverance why so loath are some to speak or hear?

Because, as masters over sloth, they vow to persevere.

Whence is imputed righteousness a point so little known?

Because men think they all possess some righteousness their own.

3.    Not so the needy, helpless soul, prefers his humble prayer;

He looks to Him that works the whole, and seeks his treasure there.

His language is, Let me, my God, on sovereign grace rely;

And own `tis free, because bestowed on one so vile as I.

4.    Election! `tis a word divine; for, Lord, I plainly see,

Had not Thy choice preceded mine, I ne’er had chosen Thee.

For perseverance strength I’ve none, but would on this depend —

That Jesus, having loved His own, will love them to the end.

5.    Empty and bare, I come to Thee for righteousness divine;

O may Thy matchless merits be, by imputation, mine.

Thus differ these; yet hoping each to make salvation sure.

Now most men will approve the rich, but Christ has blessed the poor.

“Jehovah-jireh”

Genesis 22:l4

The name by which God revealed himself to Abraham at Mt. Moriah, Jehovah-jireh, might be translated by three expressions: “the Lord will see”, “the Lord will provide”, and “the Lord will be seen”. However the name Jehovah-jireh is translated, it expresses the idea of God seeing and being seen. For God, to see is to provide. By this name, Jehovah-Jireh, God our Father would have us to know that he sees our need and faithfully provides for our need, and that he will be seen in the provision he makes. Without question, this encourages our hearts to trust his daily providence. But the thing which inspired Abraham to raise up this memorial to God’s honor was the substitution of the ram to die in the place of his son, Isaac, and Isaac’s deliverance from death. Jehovah-Jireh is a name of our God which describes his saving grace in Christ Jesus.

See

Jehovah-jireh means “the Lord will see.” Our Father, from eternity, saw the need into which we would fall by the sin of Adam in the garden, and by our own iniquity, transgression, and sin in time. And with the foresight of Divine love, he provided his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be our Substitute in the covenant of grace. When the fulness of time was come, God met our need by sending Christ to die at Calvary. And when God, by his Spirit, created a need in our hearts for Christ, causing us to seek him, he gave his Son to us. Today, by his free grace, God gives his Son to all who need him.

Provide

Jehovah-jireh means “the Lord will provide.” Jehovah-Jireh was Abraham’s testimony to the goodness and grace of God in providing a ram to die in Isaac’s place. And it is our testimony of praise to God for providing Christ to be our Substitute. But this name also implies that our God, who gave us his Son, will also freely give us all things in his Son and with his Son (Romans 8:32).

Be Seen

Jehovah-jireh means “the Lord will be seen.” — “In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” God is seen in the sacrifice of his Son at Mt. Calvary. And God shall be seen in the face of his Provision, Christ Jesus, upon Mt. Zion in heaven. All this was included in Abraham’s prophecy. All who see God in Christ, the crucified Substitute, who died in our place upon Mt. Calvary, shall see God face to face in Christ Jesus, who is himself Jehovah-jireh!

Three Things Not Found in Heaven

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)

I cannot begin to describe the bliss and glory of our heavenly inheritance. Much that awaits us is yet unknown. And that which is revealed is seen here “through a glass darkly.” But here are three things, with which all who live upon the earth are very familiar, which shall not be found in heaven.

No Tears

There will be no tears in heaven. — “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more crying.” Here we see much death, experience much sorrow, and feel much pain. And these things cause our eyes to swell and our cheeks to burn. But our God shall soon dry our eyes. In heaven, all that causes us to weep now shall cease to be. Once we have left this world of sorrow, we shall never weep again!

No Sin

There will be no sin in heaven. — “There shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie” (Revelation 21:27). Here we are yet defiled by much sin. Here we, because of the infirmity of the flesh, yet work much abomination and deceit. But soon we shall drop this robe of flesh, and with it the nature of sin, and we shall never do evil again. O happy, glorious day! We shall soon be done with sin forever! And there will be no possibility of God’s elect ever being defiled again.

No Curse

And there shall be no curse in heaven. — “There shall be no more curse” (Revelation 22:3). Where there is no sin there is no curse. Where there is no possibility of sin there is no possibility of curse. We will suffer no curse from God for sin, because Christ suffered the curse of the law for us (Galatians 3:13). Can you grasp this blessed truth by faith? God will see to it that none of his elect suffer any loss, sorrow, or pain because of their sin. Indeed, he will so thoroughly rout and overrule this enemy of our souls that, through the redemptive work of Christ, even our sin shall be turned into a blessing. What greater blessing could there be than full redemption from and complete forgiveness of all our sins?

My soul, be of good cheer!

With such good hope as this,

What sorrows here can be compared

To heaven's endless bliss?
