Sinners, Come to Christ BelievingDon Fortner

(Tune: Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken #185 — 87.87.D)

1.     Sinners, come to Christ believing;

He alone can save the lost.

He is able, He is willing,

Christ saves to the uttermost!

Without Jesus, you will perish,

You will suffer endless death;

Tremble now, offended justice,

Seeks to slay the child of wrath!

2.     Yet, behold, the way is open!

See the Refuge for the lost —

Christ, with His own blood in heaven,

Pleads the merits of His cross:

“Father, here’s the price of ransom,

See the merits of My blood.

You can justly now forgive them

Who, believing, come to God.”

3.     Come to God and sue for mercy

Through the merits of His Son;

Never has a sinner guilty

Not his suit for mercy won!

God the Father will receive you

Through the blood of Christ His Son,

As the Holy Spirit draws you,

Come to Christ, O sinner, come!

Salvation as God Describes it

Ephesians 2:8-9

With all the babble, confusion, and religious nonsense there is in this world, in this age when the house of God seems to lie in a heap of ruins, in this day of obvious divine judgment, in this day in which we and our fathers have been kindling the wrath of God for generations, burning incense to other gods, I wonder if it might not be wise for us to go through all the ruins of God’s house, like Hilkiah, the high priest during the days of Josiah, and search for the Book of God. Like that faithful man, pick it up, dust it off, and read it. Then, after reading it, like that godly young king, we would be wise to inquire of the Lord concerning the words of his Book.

            We would be wise to lay aside our church creeds, catechisms, and confessions of faith, all of them! Lay aside our theology books, religious papers, religious traditions, customs, and even the opinions of great men of the past. How I wish we could do that! How I wish I could get men and women to simply hear what God says in his Word about his salvation!

            I wish we could forget about Calvinism and Arminianism, Catholicism and Protestantism, Pietists and Puritans, Liberals and Fundamentalists, and simply seek to find out from God’s own Word what God himself has to say about his salvation. If we could do that, we might find out what salvation is. We might even come to possess it!

Can we do that? Can you lay aside everything you have ever thought, heard, and learned about salvation from all other sources, and look into the Word of God to see what God has to say about this thing called salvation?

Everywhere salvation is spoken of in Holy Scripture, everywhere it is illustrated, everywhere it is explained it is presented to us just as it is right here in Ephesians 2:8-9. — “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Here God the Holy Spirit tells us five things about God’s salvation. These five things are always characteristic of God’s saving operations. Wherever salvation is found, wherever salvation is experienced, these five things are both obvious and gladly acknowledged.

1.     Salvation is by grace alone.

2.     Salvation is through faith alone.

3.     Salvation is in Christ alone.

4.     Salvation, in its entirety, (even the faith by which it is experienced) is the gift of God.

5.     This salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone is accomplished entirely without works of any kind on the part of the one who is saved.

            Be sure you hear what God says. We are saved without works. Our relationship with God certainly determines what we do; but what we do, either good or bad, has absolutely nothing to do with our relationship with God.

“Boasting excluded, pride I abase, I’m only a sinner saved by grace!”

“Thy people shall be willing!”

Psalm 110:3

            This is a coronation Psalm. It describes the coronation of the Lord Jesus Christ as our King. Having accomplished our redemption by the sacrifice of himself, having finished the work which his Father gave him to do as our Mediator, having fulfilled all the Father’s will as our Surety, "The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” This coronation of Christ as King of kings and Lord of lords has nothing to do with his divinity. As God, he is Lord and King of the universe by divine right, always has been and always will be. This coronation is the exaltation and dominion which our Savior earned as our Mediator. This is the reward of his faithful obedience and finished work as the God-man (John 17:2; Romans 14:9; Philippians 2:8-11; Hebrews 1:1-3; 10:10-14).

Earned Crown

Once our Lord Jesus was crowned as the omnipotent Prince and King of the universe, the scepter of righteousness was put into his hands; he was given power, dominion, and authority over all flesh for the saving of his people, with this blessed promise: — “The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.” The triune God has turned over the dominion of the universe to the man Christ Jesus. He who died to redeem his people at Calvary now reigns over all things (Even in the midst of his enemies!) to save those sinners purchased with his blood. Our Lord Jesus Christ earned his royal crown.

His People

But where are his people? A king without subjects is no king at all. The title of “king” is a mockery if there are no people, no subjects to the king. Where, then, shall the Christ of God find subjects who shall at last fill up the fulness of him that filleth all in all? The Scripture promises “A seed shall serve him” (Psalm 22:30); but who are they? Where are they? Sometimes we fear that God is saving no one, that our labor is in vain. We preach the gospel to hard hearted, obstinate sinners, to proud, dead, self-righteous religionists, to a valley full of dead, dry bones. Frequently, we almost despair, wondering, “Where shall we find subjects for this great King, our God and Savior? Where shall we find men and women willing to bow to the Son of God?” Then, when we read Psalm 110:3, our fears are silenced and laid to rest. — “Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth." Blessed be the name of our great God! Nothing is in jeopardy. There is no danger of failure with him. There is a people in this world who belong to the Lord Jesus Christ. They are God’s elect, a people given to him, put into his hands as the Surety of the covenant before the world was made. They were his people before he came to save them and shall be his people forever. As surely as the Father gave them to him in eternity, the Spirit shall bring them to him by his almighty, effectual, irresistible, saving grace in time (Matthew 1:21; John 6:37-40). His people are safe and secure in his hands from eternity (John 10:27-30). They shall never perish! Be sure you get the meaning of this promise. It is this: — Our all-glorious Christ, our great King shall never lack for a people to serve him, because all his people are made willing in the day of his power to be his subjects forever.
