Our Sovereign God Maintains His Universal ThroneDon Fortner

(Tune: #39 — This is My Father’s World — SMD)

1.    Our sov’reign God maintains His universal throne;

In heav’n, and earth, and hell, He reigns, and makes His wonders known!

His counsels and decrees, firmer than mountains stand;

He will perform whate’er He please; and none can stay his hand!

2.    All things His will controls; and His all-wise decree

Has fixed the destinies of all in matchless sov’reignty. —

Jacob by grace He saved, and gives no reason why;

But Esau’s heart He left depraved. — And who shall dare reply?

3.    What if the Potter takes part of a lump of clay,

And for Himself a vessel makes and casts the rest away?

Who shall resist His will or say, “What doest Thou?”

Jehovah is the Sov’reign still; and all to Him must bow!

4.    My soul, bow and adore the Lord in all His ways;

His sov’reignty none can explore; but I will trust His grace!

For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things:

To Whom be glory evermore! Amen! Amen! Amen!

My Three Favorite Texts

Isaiah 40:1-2

The preaching of the gospel is specifically designed of God to minister comfort to God’s elect in this world of sin and sorrow. In fact, the Lord God directly commands his servants in preaching the gospel to comfort his people. That is my aim as I endeavor to instruct you in the blessed doctrines of the gospel, as I try to set before you the glorious character and gracious operations of God our Savior.

            There are specific passages which specifically minister to our own hearts’ needs and become our favorites. These three are my favorites because they set forth the three most precious, delightful, soul-cheering truths of the gospel by which my faith is continually strengthened, my soul is continually encouraged, and my heart is continually comforted in this world so constantly filled with trials, temptations, and troubles.

Psalm 115:3

“Our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.” — Here the psalmist David plainly declares the great supremacy and glorious sovereignty of our God. Our God is supreme over all the gods men and woman have made and imagined throughout the world. He who truly is God is the God who rules over all things, at all times, in all places, absolutely. He is the absolute, unrivaled Sovereign of the universe, who always does his will in heaven, earth, and hell. “He has his way in the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him —- What doest thou?” The God I worship, trust, and love is in total control of the universe!

2 Corinthians 5:21

“He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” — With those words, the Apostle Paul sets before us the effectual, substitutionary atonement of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Son of God was made sin for his people. Because he was made sin, our sins were justly imputed to him; and he died under the wrath of God for God’s elect, for every sinner who trusts him. Thus he accomplished our redemption and obtained our eternal salvation. As he was made to be sin for us, though he never knew sin, even so, by that same mighty work of justice and grace, of righteousness and mercy, all for whom he died are made to be the very righteousness of God in him and the righteousness of God is  imputed unto us.

Romans 8:28

“We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” — Here the inspired Apostle declares the holy, wise, good, adorable providence of our God. This is the thing which quietens our fears in the midst of trials, temptations, and troubles in this world. Blessed are they who walk in assurance of their heavenly Father’s good providence!

“Turned unto Fables”

2 Timothy 4:4

The prophecy made by the Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:1-5 has come to pass in our day. All over the world men, and women, and boys, and girls gather in religious assemblies. Some are very solemn. Others can barely be distinguished from dance hall revelry. But they gather in the name of Christ to worship God. They read the Bible, say their prayers, invoke God’s blessing, and give their money. They are devoted. They are sincere. But they are lost! They have faith; but theirs is a false faith. They have hope; but their hope is a delusion. Having been led and taught by blind and ignorant men, “They will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts...they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears...They turn away their ears from the truth and (have been) turned unto fables.”

            A fable is story dreamed up by a man to teach a moral, ethical lesson, but factually, it is a lie. Here are three common religious fables, dreamed up by men to teach people moral principles. They are universally embraced, proclaimed, and defended. These three fables are constantly presented throughout this city, across this country, and around the world in this day of man centered religion as the very truth of God. But they are in fact lies, which are damning to the souls of all who believe them.

Universal Love

“God loves everyone.” — We hear that from almost every religious leader in the world. We read it on church signs, bumper stickers, and bridges all over the country. But it is a bald faced lie. God does not love everyone. He never has! Nowhere does the Bible say or imply that he does. If God loves everybody, he has a mighty strange way of showing it. Try preaching that to those who perished in the flood, the sons of Korah, the damned in hell. They know better! The fact is, the Bible plainly tells us that God does not love everyone (Psalms 11:5; 7:11; Romans 9:13). “God is love.” We rejoice in that. But God’s love is in Christ. In the Bible there is no assurance of God’s love given to anyone apart from faith in Christ.

Universal Atonement

“The Lord Jesus Christ died to redeem and save all people.” — There is no doctrine in all the world more blasphemous than that. To say that Christ died for all people without exception is to say that he died for multitudes for whom he refused even to pray. Read it for yourself in John 17:9 and 20. To say that he died for all without exception is to say that he died in vain for the multitudes of the damned! That is blasphemy! It is a blatant declaration that Jesus Christ is a failure! If he is a failure, he is not God, and is not fit to be trusted. The Bible nowhere teaches or implies that Christ died for, redeemed, or came to save those multitudes who are at last lost in hell. Those for whom Christ died shall never die! The Son of God redeemed all he came to redeem; and he shall save all for whom he died.

Universal Grace

“The Holy Spirit of God is doing all that he can to save everyone.” — You know that is not true. There are multitudes to whom the Spirit of God has never even sent his Word. The Bible says nothing of the Spirit trying to reprove, trying to convince, or trying to regenerate. The Bible declares, “It is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing.”
