Eve was created when God created Adam, but came forth on another day when the Lord God brought her to Adam. So it is with Christ and his church.

·      Bro. Eric Richards has accepted the call to be pastor of the Sovereign Grace Fellowship of San Diego, CA. We rejoice with Bro. Richards and our friends in San Diego for God’s goodness and grace upon them.

·      I am scheduled to preach for Todds RD Grace Church in Lexington, KY, where Bro. Todd Nibert is pastor, Wednesday night. Service begins at 7:00 PM.

·      I am scheduled to preach for San Diego Grace Fellowship in San Diego, CA, where Bro. Eric Richards is pastor, Tuesday and Wednesday, January 22-23.

·      We will have lunch together after the service this morning, followed by a baby shower for Tony and Jennifer Pruter. There will be no service here tonight.

Free Grace, Triumphant, Shall Prevail! — Don Fortner

(Tune: #225 I Heard The Voice of Jesus Say -- CMD)

1.     Believers glory in the Lord when God’s Spirit with ours

Bears witness to His holy Word, with all His saving pow’rs.

The Holy Ghost, and He alone, both wounds and makes us whole.

God’s grace both wounds and heals the wound. ‘Tis grace that saves my soul!

2.     God’s free, electing love I see, and from it comfort take,

Because I know He’s chosen me in Christ and for His sake.

God’s grace to me has been applied, (I’m sprinkled with the blood!)

Believing, I am justified, and reconciled to God!

3.     Christ’s perfect righteousness is mine, as my sin once was His.

He paid my debt with blood divine, and gave me all that’s His!

That sinners foul as hell, by Christ, are saved, I know full well;

For I am saved and I am blessed, — a sinner black as hell!

4.     “But will you persevere?” You ask. To me, this thing is clear.

So long as God’s faithfulness last, that long, I’ll persevere.

His purposed grace, He will fulfil. His promises are good.

Free grace, triumphant, shall prevail, and bring me home to God!

“A Continual Burnt Offering”

Exodus 29:38-46

In the Old Testament, under the legal, Mosaic dispensation, the Lord God required a continual burnt offering, an offering made by fire every morning and every evening. He promised to meet his people in mercy, sanctify them, dwell among them, and glorify himself by this continual burnt offering. Of course, both the continual burnt offering and the promises connected with it were useful and meaningful only as types of our Lord Jesus Christ, our continual burnt offering, in and by whom our God accepts us in mercy, blesses us with grace, sanctifies us, dwells with us in peace, and reveals his glory.

Christ our Sacrifice

How infinitely important in the sight of the eternal God was, and is that indescribably vast and efficacious sacrifice of the Lamb of God “slain from the foundation of the world,” which every day, morning and evening, the Lord God commanded to be set forth in this ceremonial offering made by fire. With careful exactness, the church in the wilderness observed this daily ritual of oblation. Scrupulously, all true Israelites performed the ritual with an eye of faith, looking for the appearance of the promised Redeemer.

Every morning and every evening, this continual burnt offering proclaimed to all who observed that “without shedding of blood is no remission.” Without blood atonement, none can be accepted. Without a divine Substitute, none can be forgiven. Without a justice satisfying, propitiatory sacrifice, none can be justified. Sin must be punished.

In the Old Testament Moses, and Aaron, and believing men and women throughout that dispensation kept this continual burnt offering at the house of God by faith in Christ, the Lamb of God, who in due time died for sinners, put away sin, did away all the penal effects of sin, and brought all the law to a full stop by the sacrifice of himself.

Sacrifice Ceased

This daily sacrifice and the oblation has ceased, just as the prophet Daniel declared it would (Daniel 9:27). The lamb of the morning and the lamb of the evening are now no more offered. Why?— Because the thing signified by these things has been accomplished. The sign is no longer needed. Christ (the One typified) has come; and redemption (the thing foreshadowed) has been accomplished. Once the substance has come the shadow is forever gone. Who needs or wants to hold a picture when the one loved is present? Yes, Christ has put a full stop to the law and all its ceremonies and sacrifices. — “Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth!” — “Ye are not under the law, but under grace!” — If you are God’s, “ye are dead to the law by the body of Christ!”

A Continual Offering

Did Israel of old have a continual burnt offering? In this Gospel Age the Israel of God, Abraham’s true seed, has a continual burnt offering before God. That Offering is Christ our Savior. Let us ever set our hearts upon him, fixing the eye of faith on him, let us behold him continually in unceasing prayer, in steadfast faith, in the ordinances of divine worship, and in all the Book of God. We should see him through the whole of the Bible. Upon every page, in every event he is the one thing, the only thing signified. I would have every person under my influence (and pray for grace for myself) to see this sweet, this blessed, this soul-comforting, soul-strengthening, soul-transforming continual burnt offering: —Christ the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world! Gaze on him and follow him whithersoever he goes and has gone. Follow him until we behold him “in the midst of the throne as the Lamb as it had been slain,” wearing in his glorified body the marks of our redemption.

“How Great Thou Art!”

“Wherefore thou art great, O Lord God: there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”                                                                                                                      (2 Samuel 7:22)

This verse is from David’s song of praise after Nathan the prophet delivered God’s promise to him concerning the everlasting kingdom of David’s Seed, the Son of David, who Himself declared, “Behold, a greater than Solomon is here.” Upon receiving this news King David asked, “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that thou hast brought us hitherto?” David’s entire prayer could be summed up with the words of that old hymn “How Great Thou Art!” Like his Psalms the theme is God’s glorious Person and work.

Recently, hearing the wind begin to blow strongly and seeing the clouds begin to thicken and darken, I went outside to witness this demonstration of God’s power. Soon it began to thunder and lightning, and these words came to mind, — “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made.” But as with David, that which is most astonishing to me is His mercy to this rebel! — “And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in — That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin!” Remember when God got you lost? And all that mattered to you was, “I must have mercy. I must have Christ.” And when the Lord Jesus spoke these blessed words to your heart, “Thy sins are forgiven thee,” remember the joy that flooded your soul? I thought, “I owe Him everything. Jesus paid it all!” O the wonder of His grace!

            Is it still wonderful? Sadly, most people gathered in churches today will hear about a god who only “tries” That can never produce an attitude of wonder and worship like David expresses. But if I am only a sinner saved by grace, God enable me to never forget it, and when I come here, to adore and worship Him “Who loved me and gave Himself  for me.”
