Grace Baptist Church of Danville

January 6, 2013

Believers fulfil the righteousness of the law (Romans 3:31; 8:4) not by offering God our best efforts at obedience to the law (filthy rags righteousness), but by offering him that which he requires and he alone can give — perfect righteousness — perfect satisfaction in the person and work of his dear Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

God’s Salvation — by Joseph Hart

(Tune: #293 — The Lord’s My Shepherd — CM)

1.    A form of words, though e’er so sound,
Can never save a soul;
The Holy Ghost must give the wound,
And make the wounded whole.

2.    Though God’s election is a truth,
Small comfort there I see,
Till I am told by God’s own mouth,
That He has chosen me.

3.    That Christ is God I can avouch,
And for His people cares,
Since I have prayed to Him as such,
And He has heard my prayers.

4.    That sinners black as hell, by Christ
Are saved, I know full well;
For I His mercy have not missed,
And I am black as hell.

5.    Thus, Christians glorify the Lord,
His Spirit joins with ours,
In bearing witness to His Word,
With all His saving powers.

“In the Beginning God”

Genesis 1:1

In the opening chapters of the Inspired Volume we are given the seed of all divine truth. The opening words of the Book of God declare that which is essential to the understanding of all things: — “In the beginning God.” All things have their origin in the Lord God himself, the Triune Jehovah.

1.    In the beginning God created all things. — When he was done, he rested from his works, keeping the first sabbath and showing us the meaning of the sabbath of faith. We rest from our works, trusting Christ alone as our Savior.

2.    In the creation, ruin and restoration of the natural creation, we are given a picture of grace and salvation. — As the earth was created, became a ruin, and was restored by the moving of God’s Spirit upon the face of the deep, so we (originally created in the image of God and then ruined by the sin and fall of our father Adam) are restored in Christ and made new by the sovereign operations of God the Holy Spirit.

3.    In the creation of Adam, we have a picture and type of Christ, the second Adam (Romans 5:14).

4.    In the creation of Eve, we are shown the purpose for and origin of God’s church. — As Eve was taken out of Adam and made for him, so the church of God was born from Christ, the second Adam, and was made for him.

5.    In the fall, we see a picture of Christ’s love for his church. — As Adam, because of his love for Eve, plunged himself into sin, death, and condemnation, so Christ, because of his love for us, plunged himself into sin, death, and condemnation as our Substitute, under the wrath of God.

6.    In Genesis 3:9, the offended God seeks the offending sinner to show him mercy.

7.    In Genesis 3:15, God himself preached the first gospel sermon to needy sinners.

8.    In the kids slain to make a covering for Adam and Eve, we see redemption and righteousness by the sacrifice of Christ the Lamb of God.

As we begin a new year, let us carry through the day, through the year, and through all the days of our lives the comfort of this blessed fact: — “All things are of God.” As all things have their beginning with the will, purpose, and decree of our heavenly Father, so all things are brought to pass by the wise, unerring hand of his good providence, and shall ultimately bring forth everlasting praise to him. — “Of him, through him, and to him are all things.

Yet, there is more. — “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” All that has been, is, and shall hereafter be is brought to pass by our God for the everlasting good of his elect. Let us find in this blessed truth comfort for every sorrow, strength to endure every trial, courage to face every foe, and joy to lighten the load of our daily pilgrimage through this world. Let these things inspire our hearts to heed the admonition of 1 Thessalonians 5:18. — “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Real Antinomianism

Robert Hawker

“For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”                                                                                                                     (Jude 1:4)

I pray the reader to observe with me that here are no charges of immorality. Had their lives been notorious, for any breaches of the moral law, surely it would have been said. Moreover, as they had crept in unawares into the Church, had their conduct been notoriously corrupt, in any flagrant acts of licentiousness, they would soon have been discovered and turned out. But they are called ungodly men; by which term, it should seem that their conduct was directly leveled against the truths of God. And indeed, the Apostle adds: “Turning the grace of God into lasciviousness.” By which, I apprehend, they presumed to charge the free grace of God, which bringeth salvation, with leading to lasciviousness; as if that grace countenanced evil; and that glorious plan, of God’s own contriving, in pardoning freely, fully, and completely, the sinner, on the sole account of Jesus’s blood and righteousness, was (as modern enemies to the free-grace salvation of Jesus have charged the same), opening the flood-gates of sin. This seems to have been their ungodliness, and for which they are condemned, as ungodly men. And, it yet appears the more probable, because it is added, that their turning the grace of God into lasciviousness, was also accompanied with denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. How could they be said to deny the only Lord God, but in denying his free grace? They could not be supposed to deny his Being. They could not, while they made a profession in the Church of Christ, either deny the Being of God, or the Being of Christ. But they indeed virtually denied both, if like certain modern professors of Christianity, they denied the only Lord God, as existing in a threefold character of Person; and denied our Lord Jesus Christ in his Godhead, and in the efficacy of his blood and righteousness.

Cain’s Children and Abel’s

Pastor Clay Curtis

The children of Cain multiplied in great numbers because Cain’s descendants practiced polygamy. Apply this to the religion of false teachers. Peter says of false teachers — they have “eyes full of adultery, beguiling unstable souls, alluring through lusts of the flesh.” Works religion increases faster in number because the harlot takes many spouses. Those called of the Lord wait upon the Lord Jesus our Husband to produce his children. False religion is a harlot (Proverbs 7: 12-21; Isaiah 3: 16-23; 2 Corinthians 6: 14-18).
