Come, All Saints, Your Praises Bring — Don Fortner (Tune: #233 — Depth of Mercy — 77.77) 1. Come, all saints, your praises bring, To our Savior, Zion's King. He shall conquer evÕry foe, And eternal peace bestow. 2. Jesus reigns oÕer earth and hell, Governs all creation well, Making all things work for good, To the purchase of His blood. 3. Jesus reigns, in ransomÕd souls, And our raging sin controls, Plants His laws within our hearts, And from us will not depart! 4. Jesus reigns in heavÕn above, Rests in His unchanging love, Scatters blessings from His throne, Conquers, keeps, and saves His own!
25 The Free Obedience of Our Substitute
ÒOther sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, [and] one shepherd. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.Ó (John 10:16-18)
Let me show you three things from these words, which fell from Him of whom it is written, Ògrace is poured into Thy lips.Ó
The FatherÕs Command
The Lord Jesus Christ speaks of Himself here not as the eternal Son of God, but as the Good Shepherd, the Mediator, the Surety of His people. He says, ÒThis commandment have I received of my Father.Ó With those words, He declares that His death as our Substitute was arranged by the Triune God before the world began (Psalm 40:7; Hebrews 10:7-10).
The death of Christ was not accomplished by the arrangement of men or by the arrangement of hell, but by the arrangement of the Triune God (Acts 2:23; 1 Peter 1:18-20). The death of Christ at Calvary was accomplished by the arrangement of an eternal covenant, sovereign providence, and infinite love (John 3:16; Romans 5:6-8).
The SaviorÕs Obedience
The Lord Jesus Christ laid down His life voluntarily, as an act of free obedience to His Father. No man forced Him to die. God the Father did not compel Him to die, or take His life from Him. Oh, No! Our Savior died voluntarily, by His own will. Yes, our RedeemerÕs death was accomplished by His own will. ÒHe poured out his soul unto death!Ó
It is true, as we have seen, Òit pleased the Father to bruise him.Ó The Father cried, ÒAwake, O sword, against One that is My Fellow. Smite the Shepherd!Ó Yet Christ took the cup of wrath in His own hands. The Son of God fell willingly upon the sword of justice.
Our Savior died by His own will! The Son of God laid down His life for the satisfaction of Divine justice as the Substitute for chosen sinners, for the glory of God, because of His great love for his elect. Moreover, He laid down His life that He might take it again by His own resurrection power and reign forever as our Redeemer-King upon Òthe throne of graceÓ (Romans14:9; Philippians 2:5-11; Hebrews 4:16).
The FatherÕs Love for Christ
Our Savior says, ÒTherefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life.Ó I know of nothing in heaven or earth so sweet to meditate upon and so
26 impossible to write or peach about as the FatherÕs love for His darling, dying Son. Hear it again. — ÒTherefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life.Ó God himself never saw anything in all the world so lovely, so infinitely worthy of His love, admiration, and honor as the death of His dear Son upon the cursed tree for His people. — ÒHerein is love!Ó
Because of this great act of love, because of this great act of ChristÕs free obedience to the Father as our Surety, the Father has given his Son everything! (Read Isaiah53:4-12; John 3:35; 17:2.)
Four Lessons
There are several practical lessons to be drawn from our SaviorÕs obedience for every child of God in this world.
Believer, gaze steadfastly upon your crucified Redeemer and realize that ÒYe are not your own. For ye are bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are GodÕs.Ó
In John 8:24 our Lord Jesus, who cannot lie, said: Ò.. if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins.Ó The saints of God believe that Jesus Christ is the great ÒI AM!Ó We believe He is our Majestic God, our Great Creator, who became a man so that He could suffer and bleed and die to pay the ransom price in full for all our sins. All of GodÕs elect die in faith! All others die in their sins, and wake up in eternal torment. Our Lord Jesus was crucified between two thieves. Both were guilty, sinful men, who deserved GodÕs eternal wrath. When they died, one woke up in glory, the other woke up in hell. GodÕs sovereign grace was freely bestowed upon one of those thieves, and was withheld from the other. Why? — Because of GodÕs grace. He saved that one thief, and called him with an holy calling, not according to his works, but according to GodÕs own purpose and grace which was given him in Christ Jesus before the world began (2 Timothy 1:9). Also, it pleased God to reveal the Lord Jesus Christ to the one thief, and hide the truth from the other (Matthew 11:25 - 27). Brethren, ÒGod will have mercy on whom He will have mercy, and have compassion on whom He will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy (Rom. 9:15-16). — Pastor Gene Harmon
