1. The sinner who believes

In Christ’s atoning blood

Is justified from all things and

Saved by the grace of God.

2. Yet, sin within remains,

And base corruptions rise!

Then Satan tempts us to despair

And God’s free grace despise.

3. Our flesh with him agrees,

And says we cannot be

Partakers of God’s saving grace,

And yet such sinners be.

4. But faith looks out of self

And trusts in Christ alone.

Our hope is not in what we do,

But what our Lord has done!

5. His blood and righteousness,

The anchor of our souls,

Assures us in the teeth of sin

Free grace has made us whole!

There is a reason for everything we do in our public worship services and a reason for everything we refuse to do. The reason is Holy Scripture. We meet together to pray, read the Book of God, preach the Word, observe the prescribed ordinances of divine worship, and sing Jehovah’s praise. We do not engage in the tomfoolery of contemporary religious entertainment for the same reason.

“In Him is No Sin”

1 John 3:5

The Lord Jesus Christ was manifested to take away our sins and in Christ there is no sin. Though he was made sin for us, our Lord had no sin of his own. — “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.” — “Who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners.” In order for him to be a suitable sacrifice for sin, it was necessary that our Savior be without sin. The sinner’s Substitute must himself be innocent, righteous, and holy.

Christ Made Sin

Yet, in order to redeem us from our sins and to justify us before God, the Son of God had to be made sin for us. By a profoundly mysterious and infinitely wise transfer of grace, the Son of God was made sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21). Being made sin for us, our guilt was imputed to the Lord Jesus Christ and he was made a curse for us (Galatians 3:13). God’s holy law exacted from him the just penalty of our sins. — “He hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” — “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.”

And having taken our sins upon himself, suffering for us the just penalty of our sins, our glorious Mediator in heaven once again has no sin. That one who sits in heaven and makes intercession for us has no sin. We know and are assured that he who was made sin for us is now without sin, because he was “declared to be the Son of God with power” when he arose from the dead, being “justified in the Spirit,” and ascended into heaven, where he ever lives to make intercession for us. Our Advocate and High Priest in heaven is perfect. He is holy. He has no sin. This is the basis of our assurance and confidence with God. We have a perfect Substitute and sacrifice whom the Father has accepted.

Sinners without Sin

But this text is speaking of those who are in Christ. John tells us, by the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit, that in Christ we have no sin. In ourselves we are sinners. The old nature of sin is with us and will be with us so long as we are in this world. Anyone who denies this is a liar and makes God a liar. Yet, before God, in the sight of God, those who are in Christ by a living faith have no sin. “He was manifested to take away our sins.” And he has done it! — “And in him is no sin!” The all-seeing eye of God’s holy law sees no sin in the believer, because we are in Christ; “and in him is no sin!” The believer has no sin. — “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us!” And in that great day, when God shall judge all men according to their works, he declares, “the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.”

My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought, —

My sin, not in part but the whole,

Is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more, —

Praise the Lord, it is well with my soul!

“Good News”

Proverbs 25:25

I have a good many dear friends, brothers and sisters in Christ, who could benefit greatly by a little good news. I want, by the Spirit of God, to be a messenger of good news to them and to you.

Good News for Sinners

Here is good news for helpless sinners from the almighty God of sovereign grace. The God against whom we have sinned is a gracious, almighty God. It is true; God is holy, righteous, and just. He must and will punish sin. But it is the glory of God to forgive iniquity, transgression, and sin. His goodness is his glory (Exodus 33:18-19; 34:5-7).

This great God has found a way to save sinners without compromising his holy character. He gave his Son, Jesus Christ, to be a propitiation for our sins. The Lord Jesus Christ has obtained eternal redemption for every sinner who comes to God by him.

Good News for Pilgrims

Here is good news for weary, heavy-hearted pilgrims from our homeland in heaven. Do you have heartaches and troubles too numerous to count? It will do you good to receive some good news from home. — The Lord our God is still on his throne. — Our Savior is still in heaven, preparing a place for you, representing you, interceding for you. — There are many in heaven just like you and me already. There is a fallen David there, a doubting Thomas, an angry Moses, a feeble Philip, an impetuous Peter, and a righteous Lot. All are there by grace alone, through the merits of Christ’s blood and righteousness.

And you are wanted there! God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost want you there. The angels of God want you there. Your glorified brethren want you there. — And, soon, the Lord Jesus Christ will come again to take you there (John 14:1-3).

Good News for the Church

And we have good news for the church above from the church here below. Our brothers and sisters in heaven are interested in God’s church on earth. They rejoice to hear that sinners are repenting. God’s saints are running the race with patience. Gospel churches are being established. The gospel is spreading again through America, Mexico, Africa, Europe, Asia, Canada, Australia, and the islands of the seas. God’s saints are growing in grace. Some are growing old gracefully. Some are growing feeble, but growing strong in the Lord. And some will be going home soon. — Rejoice! There is good news all around!

By his incarnation, the Son of God became capable of putting away the sins of his people. By his death at Calvary, the Lord Jesus Christ actually put away all the sins of God’s elect by effectual blood atonement. By his resurrection from the dead, our Savior assures us that righteousness is established and redemption is accomplished for sinners in him. By his ascension, exaltation, and glorious intercession as Zion’s Prince and Priest, the Lord of glory sovereignly bestows upon chosen, redeemed sinners all the benefits and blessings of grace flowing from the throne of divine justice and immaculate mercy though his blood to those sinners whom he loves with an everlasting love.
