`Midst Fiery Trials, Hellish Foes Don Fortner

(Tune: #497 — When I Can Read My Title Clear — CM)

1.    Sinners redeemed, God’s own elect,

(Most precious in His sight!)

Fear not, His hand shall well protect

His chosen, day and night!

2.    `Midst fiery trials, hellish foes,

And Satan’s roars and snares;

Your troubles Christ, your Savior, knows. —

On Him cast all your cares!

3.    Remember, all the saints of old

Pass’d through the fire to God.

This is the path, as we are told, —

The consecrated road.

4.    Go on, the prize is just in view,

The struggle can’t be long;

Almighty grace shall bring you through,

To join the ransom’d throng!

He Careth For You!”

1 Peter 5:7

For that child of God who is laboring under some present distress, there are no words sweeter than these — “He careth for you!” He cares for your soul. He cares so much that he gave his only begotten Son to redeem you from sin and supply you with every spiritual need. Surely, if Jesus Christ died to redeem your soul from death, you must know his great care. Not only is that so, the Lord God tenderly cares for the bodies and the concerns of the lives of his people. Do you believe that He cares? Then cast your care upon the Lord!

Are you troubled about your sin? Cast it upon the Lord. Are you troubled about some personal trial? Cast it upon the Lord. He was tempted in all points like as we are. He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He is able to help them that believe. Go, therefore, with your heavy burden to the throne of your merciful High Priest, cast your burden there and find grace and mercy to help in your time of need.

Eternity

2 Corinthians 4:18

Eternity is a subject about which the wisest man can know only a little. It is a subject which we must approach with our Bibles in our hands. Let us seek to know what is written about eternity. What do the Scriptures say? Only those who recognize the sobering reality of eternity can live in a proper relation to the things of time. Let me give you four statements I picked up from an old writer, that will help you to live in the awareness of eternity.

1.    We live in a world where all things are temporal and passing away. That man must be blind who cannot see this. Everything around us is decaying, dying, and coming to an end.

2.    We are all going to a world where everything is eternal. The great unseen world that lies beyond the grave is eternal. Whether it is happy or miserable, joyful or sorrowful, it will never end. The bliss of heaven is eternal, and the torments of hell are eternal.

3.    Our state in the unseen world of eternity depends on what we are in time. If we are the sons of God here, relying upon the merits of Christ as our only hope of salvation, we shall be the sons of God eternally, living in the glory of Christ. If we are the children of wrath here, despising the Son of God, trampling the blood of Christ under our feet, we shall be the children of wrath in hell forever, rejected by Christ.

4.    The Lord Jesus Christ is the great Friend to whom we must turn for life and help, both for time and eternity. Jesus Christ alone can save your soul. Only his blood can wash away your sin. Only his righteousness can make you holy. Only his grace can present you faultless before the throne of glory. You must trust him now and live forever, or you will forever die. Take your mind off the things of time, and think for a while about the reality of eternity. How will it be with your soul in eternity?

“The Lord is Good”

Nahum 1:7

The Lord is good!Oh, I like that! Our great God is good! Goodness is as essential to God’s Being as is his sovereignty, his justice, his truth, and his holiness. In fact, the very name “God” is an abbreviation of the word “good.” Yes, goodness is essential to God. Without it, he would not be God. John Gill rightly observed, “There is nothing but goodness in God, and nothing but goodness comes from him.” God ordains evil that he may overrule it for good (Psalm 76:10). He afflicts his children and brings many evil things upon us in providence, but he makes the evil accomplish good (Romans 8:28; Genesis 50:19-20). God must punish sin; but even his punishment of sin is good, for it is the vindication of his holiness, justice, and truth (Psalm 11:6-7). God is singularly good (Matthew 19:17), immutably good (Malachi 3:6; James 1:13-17), good in all his acts of grace (Ephesians 1:3-14), and in all his works of providence (Romans 8:28; 11:36). God is infinitely, incomparably, immeasurably, eternally good! And he is particularly, distinctly good to his own elect.

“On whom dost thou trust?”

Isaiah 36:5

This question was raised by Rabshakeh to belittle the faith of the Jews. It is as if he said, like the heathen did to David, “Where is thy God?” Let us answer like David, “Our God is in the heavens; he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased!” Should any ask, “On whom dost thou trust?” I have a ready answer. — “I trust the living God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”

Some trust themselves. Some trust their church. Some trust a priest. Some trust blind fate. Some have faith in their faith. Some trust a religious experience. I trust the one true and living God, the triune Jehovah (1 John 5:7).

God the Father

I trust God, my heavenly Father! — If God is my Father, all is well. Believing that he has chosen me before the foundation of the world, I trust him to care for me as my Father, to provide for me in providence, to teach me, to guide me, to feed me, to correct me, to clothe me, to protect me, and to bring me safely home to his house (Romans 8:32).

God the Son

I trust God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, my Divine Savior! — Very God of very God is he — The man Christ Jesus! I trust him for all things, with all things, and in all things. Because of who he is, what he has done, what he is doing, and what he has promised to do, I rely upon him, the incarnate God. “The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want.”

He is my Surety (Hebrews 7:22). He is my Redeemer (Job 19:25). He is my Savior (Isaiah 43:3). He is my Intercessor (Romans 8:27). He is my Preserver (Isaiah 49:8). He is my Provider (Genesis 22:14). He is my Defender (Psalm 59:9). He is my Advocate (1 John 2:1-2). He is my Judge (1 Corinthians 4:4). He is my Refuge (Psalm 142:5).

God the Holy Ghost

I trust God the Holy Ghost, my divine Comforter. He subdues my will, enlightens my understanding, checks my passions, strengthens me in weakness, preserves me in trouble, comforts me in sorrow, guides me in his way, and restores me when I fall.

“On whom dost thou trust?” — “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). The God I trust is God indeed. — “I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him” (Revelation 19:6-7).

Oh, may God give you grace to trust him! Trusting him is salvation. Trusting him gives us peace in a world of trouble. Trusting him, we rejoice, knowing that his rule of the universe is for our good and his glory. Trusting him, we pluck up the tree of trouble and cast it into the sea, remove the mountain that stands to oppose us, and walk with God, just and perfect in his Son, “accepted in the Beloved!
